Hi Danny, I just got back from a 5 day vacation to New Mexico to visit family. I bouhgt this bag on your review and recommendation. For me this is a PERFECT bag for my travel needs..In short everything you mentioned was so true. I LOVE this bag and it will be on many Adventure's in the near future. The value for such a well made backpack makes me feel that it IS the Best part of the total package. I cannot believe that I paid so little for a Great Backpack. Thanks for the Wonderful reviews. Keep them coming.
After watching your video, I decided to order this for US$70. I was looking for something that can work as a personal item but holds more than 30L when required. My other requirements were: - under 1 kg when empty - luggage pass-through - an external pocket that can easily be accessed when the bag is on one shoulder - laptop sleeve but NOT separate laptop compartment - hooks or bungee in front for additional items like a jacket - lockable zipper pulls Bonus: ability to use with a hydration bladder. So happy that I found this unicorn!
Thank you for the brilliant in depth review . This is my favourite travel bag . It is the perfect travel bag one bag personal item , you name it . I think the updates actually ruined the bag . I loved the 2 separate areas and the fact that you could expand it in the lid. I think if they did a mesh pocket instead of the zipped one at the front and a separate laptop compartment this would have been the perfect bag. But oh well I have used it on easyJet wizzair and Ryanair as a personal under the seat bag and it was ok . I have used it for a 5 day trip and a 10 day trip and if you are a good packer you can use it for a 2 week trip easy.
Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience with the bag! I agree it’s super versatile, it worked very well as a personal item for flights in Europe. The updates definitely left me torn, but I was happy to see it still felt really versatile
The pocket layout is definitely better on the old model. The open front pocket on the old version is great. Additionally, the lid pocket on the old version is much better (as you pointed out). So my advice: go with the older version. My current favorite travel bag is the 5.11 Daily Deploy 48 pack (39 liters). It’s a real dark horse in the travel community. 😊
One "hidden" feature I discovered while travelling with this backpack is that if you have your main compartment pretty filled up with clothes but want it to fit the "personal item" size requirements, you can use the whole backpack as a "compressible" packing cube by filling it and closing it while expanded and then closing the zipper so it compresses what's inside. Worked really well for me, made it really easy to pack.
Great video man. This backpack looks awesome, I can't wait to get one. They are currently out of stock but I hope they update it because this bag has everything I'm looking for
Thank you for watching and I’m glad the video was helpful! The bag is definitely one of the most versatile that I’ve used and hopefully the restock happens soon!
It’s not often I feel like an update is a step backwards, but this feels like a bust compared to the old version to me. I can’t tell you how often I pulled the straps through the clips and stowed the shoulder straps in the pass through portion to simplify the carry. The separate zipper portion was crucial to making it feel like you really got 6 extra liters and was great for dirty clothes separation. The new front zipper is nice to have an added secure tablet space, but the old one was so nice to have quick access to things. A huge dropped ball for me would have been the opportunity to add two clip points and give an optional shoulder strap. The form and function of this bag would be perfect for that carry option. I almost solely buy Osprey packs for the designs and warranty, but this is a bust for me. 😢 The new 36L looks much better!
Agree! My husband and I travel with the older style & I agree with your assessment. The older version is a nicer design. That said- I do wish they had added clips to the bottom of the straps so that one didn’t have to slide the straps out in order to stow them away. The Arcane duffel has the clips on the shoulder straps as well as a separate strap to carry it like a duffel… nice features, but the duffel is too large at 37 L for underseat travel. So agree… hope Osprey reads these comments 🤞🏻🤞🏻
I think they split the luggage handle pass-thru to accommodate for taller format carry-on rollers in which the handle doesn't extend enough to reach through the pass-thru comfortably.
When shopping for a backpack.. there’s always one thing that won’t be perfect. But this one is pretty close to being a nice travel pack with my roller luggage. 💁🏻♀️
The main problem I see is in its dimensions: 43x33x15 cm. If we take Ryanair, which has the strictest rules, then: - Under the seat allowance is 40x20x25. Hence, this backpack will not fit. - Above the seat (paid) allowance is 55x40x20. Hence, this backpack uses a slight percentage of the allowed dimensions. So it makes sense to take another backpack that is 55x40x20 and fit more stuff.
Ryanair's Sizer real dimensions are 42 x 20 x 30 cm (you know those metal boxes before boarding). Many people on Reddit have shown that this Osprey fits in the sizer (with pictures). Hope it helps.
Thank you for watching! It’s definitely tricky to manage the dimensions across all the airlines and find something useful that matches up with them. Like others have said I have had good experience with this one on Ryanair and easyjey in Europe but I know it can still be a mixed experience if there are strict airline employees
I bought the old version yesterday and was annoyed when I saw that there was an update! But then happy when I saw what has changed. The zipper on the front is a good idea, but the way the expansion is redesigned is bad. The old version allows a separate ironed shirt etc to be carried. The old version expands the lid, not the base. Danny didn’t show this though.
Thank you for watching and for the clarification on the expansion! Glad to hear you were able to get one of the older versions as I know many people still prefer that one
I also think the older expansion worked better as it allowed a nice separation. Expanding just the main space into more space just creates more depth that is either harder to pile-up or end up stacking more cubes. With the previous one, one could get away without the extra packing cubes much better
It's funny - I picked this up because the expansion leads to one big space 😅 loving mine as a daily so far and will be using it soon for travel. Hopefully there's still enough inventory of the older style out there for folks who prefer it to pick one up!
Hey Danny, thanks for the detailed review! it is really helpful. I can't find anywhere on the internet the depth of this bag when it is expanded. You wrote here that the depth when it's not expanded is 15 CM, and when you expand the bag it adds 6L to the bag. can you also say what is it is in CM when it's expanded? I ask because as you probably know most airlines allow a bag that is 20 CM deep so it might still fit the sizer when it is expanded. Or not. it all depends on the depth. Strangely, Opsprey didn't state that spec on their product page. Usually, the brands state how many CMs are added to the bag when it is expanded. So, please help with clarifying that. Thanks in advance!
Thank you for watching and I’m glad the video was helpful! The ones I use most are from wandrd (I’ll make sure there’s a link in the description if you want to check them out), but peak designs work well too
perfect timing, thanks for going through this one! any other clamshell backpacks that fit under airplane seats (18x14) or should I just hit buy on osprey
The biggest problem I had with this bag is that it was way less than 26L in its collapsed mode. I think on the more generous side it was 22L but other 22L bags I had could pack way more than the Daylite 26+6.
Thank you for watching and for the support! Definitely a tough choice, both are really great, I would say the osprey is slightly more versatile from a size perspective as it looks smaller when compressed and is a safer bet for a personal item and then the ability to expand is nice to have. The CTB feels more durable and I prefer the harness and organizational layout but it is bulkier and the size won’t work for everyone if you want something for daily use in addition to travel
can you make a video comparing with daylite 35L? and do you think is worth it vs that one? I am looking for a single backpack for 2-3 days city break and not sure which one would be better, most of the airlines would probably let you also with the 35L but does it worth the size vs 3L capacity? thank you, great review!
I have the slightly older model and really liked it. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. Not the most stylish bag, but I'll take functional over that.
Great video, and great looking backpack, but left me with a doubt - why does this one (26+6=32) have less capacity than the Patagonia MLC Mini (30)? Maybe this is not 32 actual liters?
Thank you for watching and for the suggestion! I will see if I can get one to test out, but we’ve also reviewed the endeavor in the past which might provide some idea of how solgaards bags are in case that helps
Honestly I would’ve taken this immediately if it weren’t for the laptop sleeve. I’m not convinced somehow 🙈 otherwise this backpack would’ve been so perfect 😭 10:13
Great video. I would guess that the reason for the change to the half-length luggage strap/harness is so you can tuck the backpack straps in - useful when you only want to carry it by the side handle. But I'm not sure how well that would work considering the bottom of the backpack straps are sown on the outside of the luggage strap, so maybe not... just a thought.
I think this is one of the best bags for 1 bag carry. Enough room to pack for a week and then expand if you bought a few things. Like the laptop pocket as opposed to dedicated. Wishes, maybe a little bigger top pocket for stashing things in airport, side handle is on one side of bag and not in center making it feel awkward to carry, and no place for straps. But, I have this bag and love it and travel with it even internationally.
I like the bag except that it gets top heavy and without packing cubes, it is just a big cavern and gets really messy. That's my biggest disappointment is the lack of wire framing on the bottom as it's very thin on the sides and collapses onto itself if you just fill in few things in there and don't pack it out.
Osprey is one of my favourite bag brands. I honestly think £1 for £1 they're the absolute best ratio of quality to cost to weight you can buy. There's more hard-wearing sure, but they're heavier and pricier. There's lighter, but they're not as durable and they're more expensive. There's cheaper, but they're not as durable or as light. And.. Ospreys warranty.. there are bags that cost double that aren't as backed up..

One of the best travel or carry-on backpack is the Mark Ryden 9031 model. It’s affordable and has a great feature set. We really don’t have to spend $100 to $300 USD for a decent pack.
Love this and love that they changed to having a zipper front pocket instead of that sleeve/pouch. I really wish they updated this to have a dedicated laptop compartment, though.

The "pass-through at the top" is for an airtag etc, not for a hyrdation bladder to pass through I believe.

Nope. It’s for your drinking hose. I guess it could also be used for headphone wires.
