Lee had a very distinct voice. You know a band has SEVERAL strong vocalists when a guy like this got very few songs to showcase his voice.

Agreed, but there is a good reason he didn't sing more often: It's pretty hard (impossible) to sing lead vocals while blowing into a trumpet.

When I worked in law enforcement in Indiana, I got to talk to Lee backstage after the show for about 10 minutes. I asked him why he didn't sing more, Lee simply said "too many good singers".

@@Chicago_Podcast_Authority Actually, It was a three part harmony of Robert, Terry and Peter, with Lee singing the solo lines: "They're not satisfied,
All their feelings died," "Makes them devil-eyed," and "Egos magnified, Quite Unjustified," "Makes them devil-eyed" at the end. I saw them do it live at least three times from a close view, plus I know the differences in their vocal qualities very well. Lee did, in fact, sing the solo lines in the song.

My favorite track on VII is Byblos. Takes me back to a girl I loved in high school. We're still friends today at the end of our fifties but never got to date each other. Those awkward teen years and a missed chance.

Lots of great music on Chicago VII. Their mostly instrumental side 1 of disc 1 with Prelude to Aire, Aire, Devil's Sweet, Italian From New York City, and Hanky Panky lead into the first vocal track of Life Saver.
My favorite track on VII is Terry Kath's "Byblos". A song of a missed opportunity of a romance with a girl met in a club. I think of a girl from my childhood when listening to it. She and I moved on to other loves but 40 years later are still dear friends though a thousand miles apart.

Chicago is my favorite group. I grew up with the original members and in the early-mid 1980's (stopped listening for a number of years until recently).
When I graduated from college, I decided to collect the Chicago albums from 1-17. I agree about how underrated Chicago is. I personally enjoy the deep cuts fom the band myself.
As for this song, I enjoy the lyrics; I can picture being there. Also, as always, the guitar is awesome! Lee did a good performance with the vocals. I like the infusion of the different types of music in this song.

Listen to Terry's last recording with Chicago before he died. "Taking It On Uptown." No horns and supposedly a sample of what was to appear with his new band. Sadly he died only hours before recording his first solo album with his new band. Another gem recorded in the 70's was a song written in 1969. "Mississippi Delta City Blues." Their label did not think the style would be recieved well. Really? Go figure.

Well, I did something last weekend that I never thought I’d so…went to see the current touring version of Chicago. They were one of my very favorite bands growing, up to, well, you know when. Terry K was my first guitar hero, I got all the records and saw the original lineup live three times. I figured I knew what I was going into - a nostalgia act that was basically a tribute band, and thought it might make a nice bookend on this chapter of my musical life. And that was about right. There were three original members (Lamm, Pankow, Loughnane), all of whom were in good form, skilled sidemen in the other roles, and the sound/staging was what entertaining. They did most of the big hits (including a lot of the later ballad stuff, which sure made a lot of the audience happy, and five tunes off of the first album) and a couple of relatively deep cuts (“Wake Up Sunshine” and “Mongonucleosis”). The band, especially the horns, sounded great, and if anything, Loughnane was an unexpected highlight, with a couple of really nice solos and, following @WYL2K’s comment, the lead vocal on “Color My World”. I try not to spend too much time dwelling in the past, but overall this was a pleasant indulgence.

Now you have to do Searchin So Long and Call on Me and Aire from the same album. Yes Chicago IS the most diverse and underrated band ever. Did you know that in 1971 Chicago had four of the top five albums on the Billboard charts. The CTA album didn't initally do that well. Chicago II hit big, then three, and the Carnegie Hall Live Album and the CTA album began to sell. I think The Beatles are the only other group to make this happen. Chicago was arguably the most successful rock band on the 70's. Huge number of hits as well.
