- Опубліковано 30 чер 2024
- Have you ever wondered how your pet aquarium snail ( All but nerite / apple or mystery snails) , or marbled crayfish were able to reproduce without a mate or partner?!
Well it turns out there are nearly a dozen ways this happens in nature, from self cloning signal crayfish and marbled crayfish, to gynogenesis or a species of all female individuals, to kleptospermy or the theft of male genetic material while the female inserts her own egg and chromosomes into the baby.
We will go over 7 of the craziest ways that aquatic animals in the fish keeping hobby are able to reproduce alone, through parthenogenesis, gynogenesis or via hermaphrodite methods. "Life will find a way!" - Jurassic Park.
It's a wild world for Hammerhead sharks, Goby ( gobies ), Poeciliidae /poecilia) Amazon molly / mollies, clown fish, pond snails, rams horn snails, bladder snails, crayfish and even goldfish.

Interesting. I’m going to have to listen again when my brain is functioning better.
😂 I do that too sometimes 😂 We got to get our nerd on!!!💚🙏🌿🐟🌿
No shame in that, these are complex organisms.
Alex isn’t it like 2:30 or 3:30 am? You’re doing a vid now? That’s dedication!
12:32 for him and i
Yeah it was the first free time I had all day. I did the research the last 3 days at night... filmed 3 versions and went with this lol
@@BerserkGorilla Yeah that makes me feel soooo much better knowing it was only 12:32. LOL :-)
ive seen alex post at 3am too 😳
@@BerserkGorilla Again dedication... Love you man
My initial thought was daphnia! 😂 This is so informative! Great job, fantastic reporting!🌻🌼🐝 Keep it up 🙌
Life Finds a Way! Great video. These are complex and sophisticated little creatures. Great addition to any tank.
I agree 100% :)
That was fantastic, so glad I found your channel Alex 👍
As am I! Welcome to the community!
Fascinating topic. 👍 I knew about some of it but that was a way deeper dive than I've ever went. I appreciate your dedication to research. Thank you for sharing.
✌️❤️
No problem Brotha. I always get absorbed and end up getting sucked down the rabbit hole of info on stuff like this. I'm just glad you enjoyed it Cody. Thanks
This was an incredible video! What a great topic! I had no idea that there were seven tactics that made it possible these kinds of reproduction!! Always amazing, always interesting! Hope everything's going well! Thank you for sharing and I hope you guys have a blessed day! 🙏🌿🐟🌿💚
I had no idea that there were more than maybe 2 ...3 max...turns out there's even more...like worms and starfish ...or jellyfish /Portuguese Man-O-War Jellyfish...they all can reproduce from "Fractional Reproduction / Segmental Genesis or Differential Stem Cell Cycling."
Anyhow, I'm good. Up late, getting ready to move still. The first shelving gets built Tuesday morning, and fish head there Wednesday. Crazy how fast life seems to be going!
Anyhow, I hope you and Calvin are doing swell and feeling a bit better. Thanks for your constant support and compassion, Paige! It means a great deal to me, and I send my love right back at-chyua! Hugs
Love this kind of video, and it's always nice to see your beautiful fish.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it!
I have no idea where or how much time it took for you to find/research all of this but it is so weird, amazing, and fascinating. Thank you Alex for doing a video on this. I think you made me even more confused than before :-) LOL
Thanks. If you look at the community tab, most the links that weren't just Wikipedia and Google stuff is listed
Very interesting topic! I'm hoping to get my hands on the Amazon molly!
Also, an easy way to remember the difference between mitosis and meiosis is: "Mitosis happens in my toesies, and Meiosis happens in my ovaries" (My biology teacher in HS told us that lol)
Oooo I really like that little memory device! Thanks 😊 it's easy to just say one thing and mean another when using extremely specific verbiage... im super dyslexic so little things like college vs. collage (collages are made by people at young (coll)AGEs...lol message and massage ... I mess up so many things if I don't triple check things.
Thanks for BEARING with me ;)
Hello Mridul 👍💚 Really cool stuff and I have never even heard of an Amazon Molly before!! Incredible!! Hoping you're having a great day 🙏🌿🐟🌿💚
Haha I get these mixed up too! That's why these memory devices are so useful to me as well

Where do we get these Amazon Molly’s?! Let me know if you have any luck Mridul! Or better yet grab me some and I’ll buy them from ya! I need an army of Amazon’s;)!
Thanks for share other awesome video of knowledge...
As always, thank YOU for listening and watching. Its what keeps me creating (and not just pointlessly going down curiosity trails in my mind and on Wikipedia all night alone ). Have a great weekend Bruno!
Very interesting information. Great video.
Thanks for tuning in! Have a great weekend Jacqueline! Cheers
You took me back down your rabbit hole again Alex lol. Very interesting stuff especially snails. Don’t really like them but I do have some nerites. They are freaky lol. Now going to do some reading.
Muhahah, Welcome to the all nighters of rabbit holes. It's a good way to be!
Thanks for another awesome Video. You are a great Teacher! Greetings from Germany

That is very very cool thanks for sharing Alex ! Hope the move is going well
Thanks John... im stressed, so this was a little way to avoid packing boxes for a few hours the last few nights haha. But Tuesday we start the actual move...and building racks, laying splash mats, setting up the fish room electric situation and heater etc.
Your post made me think again about how chemicals, natural/artificial radiation or even cosmic rays might have a hand in creating this genetic leap among certain species. It could explain how this mutation develops in single individuals in a mass population which is then allowed to reproduce its same mutation in offspring. The variation of the trait of the snails being both and swapping might explain how their species survives genetic errors the other species have when self-reproducing. The Amazon Mollie is a very unique fish as mentioned. It would be interesting to see how many variations might be possible in a single group with only partially related species of males present.
Thank you for this great discussion.
I agree, I'd love to learn more, you bring up great questions, Damian. I hope you're doing well! It's good to see you brotha!
That was awesome Alex!
G'day Leo. Glad to hear that you liked it, mate! Have a great weekend
@@Fishtory Hey mate yeah I really enjoyed that! Have a fantastic weekend too when you get there ha ha! I lost a whole tank of fish the other week which really sucked but it also gives me an opportunity to do something different with it now & that I will! Cheers Bud.
One week after valentines & two cupids thumbed this down cause “that’s not how love darts work!”🤣
Simply fascinating brother! Never knew about that amazon molly. I have heard that some cichlid species are being investigated for this very same ability. What really has me churning my wheels is that crayfish. When you mentioned that the first amazon molly may have been a hybrid; the crayfish came to mind as potentially being a hybrid as well. What I wonder is can that marbled crayfish sexually reproduce with a male if the same genus.
That is a really good question, my friend! They think the marbled crayfish was a mix of 2 types of marbled crayfish (Possibly even 2 separate species that hadn't been differentiated.) So I would guess the ones that have gotten loose in the wild and are raising Hell in Europe, California and Northern Africa have hybridized by now... perhaps looking at some invasive species research papers will clear that up.
Another thing that makes the crayfish more likely to have been the animal to be able to do that, is the ability of decapods/ crustaceans to grow back any claws or legs from the root of the appendage which it has lost.... this was called 'Fractional Reproduction via Stem Cell Cluster"... and it may have been the DNA for growing an egg cell got the signal to grow a whole crayfish with the same trigger, so to speak.
Worms, nematodes, starfish and sea urchins are all known to fractionallh reproduce clones also.
Truth is stranger than fiction, my friend. "Shoot that poison arrow, shoot that poison arrow, through my heart...heart heart heart!"
Great video! Hope the move goes smooth!
Thank you! I've planned it out as much as possible...so hopefully it goes well
Awesome information
Why thank you, Sir Kevin! Thanks for tuning in and commenting.
Wow so interesting thank you so much !
Im just glad to have an awesome group here on the channel, that let's me share the things that I wonder about and research...and often times, folks here also help teach me new things, and spark whole new information quests haha. Cheers and thanks again for watching and participating!
Hello Alex, these education vids have been most enjoyable, keep it up! I keep a gecko called a "mourning gecko ", so named by the natives, as they say that when they chirp they are "calling " for thier lost mates. The entire population is female, although it is said that one in a thousand is born male, but he is always infertile.
Another interesting trait is that they lay the most eggs when kept in a group.
when i first started keeping mourning geckos, I was struck by how much they are like keeping fish -they like living in a group, do best in natural planted tanks (nano!), and are endlessly facinating to watch! Now if only i could find a bottom feeder as active as a cory......
Hey Loretta, thanks for tuning in, and thank you even more for the interesting info! As far as active bottom fish.... its a bit tricky but I'll list some of my favorites that move around in the day.
Kribs, apistos, and rams all like the lower half of the tank and scoot along the bottom a lot.... panda garras, panda loaches, Ruffa garras, most loaches other than the clown loach and dwarf striped border loach, seem to also stay at the bottom mostly.
The you have gobies and stiphodon species for small peaceful tanks. And depending on your hardscape, plecos, and banjo catfish, lizard catfish, whiptails, and driftwood catfish all stay close to surfaces and away from open water
Also take a look at kuhli loaches and the synodontis group of dwarf catfish , like the petricola or cuckoo catfish ...they're a bit shy, but stick to the bottom mostly
@@Fishtory thank you, yes there are many different choices for bottom feeders in aquariums (great list!),........I was trying at a funny, need better "bottom feeders " for my terrarium: ) I put a millipede in there that I've only seen 2-3 times in as many years. Aquariums have an advantage in filling up all visual spaces.
But hay, i suppose terrariums would have the advantage for those who just can't stand algae :)
Ohhh yeah... are you into the whole springtail and isopod thing? It's pretty cool, some of the varieties now available in the trade
@@Fishtory yes, I don't have any of the cool ones yet (want duckys!), but my giant canyon are pretty cool. I heard their are isopods for aquariums, I would love to hear more about diversifying our microfuana in the aquarium, and isopods would be fun!
@@lorettajackson8759 that is something I've been wanting to work on, as a business Idea, actually. (Sourcing a dozen or so small harmless algae eating bugs and nematodes/microcrustaceans etc, then doing a "Sea Monkey Just Add Water!", type thing... I think people would love to balance the microfauna and provide live fish food all at the same time.
There is A LOT that we actually have known for centuries, maybe even millennia, that we have forgotten and that our society seems hard to understand. For instance your environment can alter your genetics over time. Also dna activation is an old thing, those that can/have have discovered things that you would probably not even believe. Thanks for the info, I love the really educational stuff
Definitely! Traditional medicine and local indigenous cultures around the world often define things so different than black and white.
For instance the Kung! San People can see an average of 12 more shades of green, than a modern western world resident can see if you put out tiles with a gradient of shades of green.
It's hard to even comprehend all the knowledge and abilities we have lost.
@@Fishtory okay so you do at know about some. That's awesome, most people will never even know that much
Can scarlet badis be kept alone. Can I keep one male. With schools or chili rasboras. CPDs. Pygmy corys and clown killifish in a 20 gallon ?
I would like you to do a video on fish foods, the ones from KENS FISH, Aquatic Foods inc etc
Hmm I don't even actually see those foods here in Seattle. Ken's I see sometimes in Portland, but not at the stores I go to nearby. Maybe I'll contact a food vendor and see if they can send some samples, just since buying 5 or 6 things of food is pricey
@@Fishtory Thanks , it was just a thought as every time I go to buy fish food they come up.
@The Secret History Living in Your Aquarium I have never heard of kens but I would like to see a video comparing the ingredients of many types of fish foods and talking about what species they could benefit and what is not digestible
I just purchased “Amazon Molly & its Gynogenetic Sexual Parasite by Clark Hubbs (1964) Ichthyology” not sure what it is, book, article, scientific publication of sorts.... excited though! I’m completely fascinated with them! Anybody know where I can acquire some?!
Haha right on! I wish I did know where to get them
Thank You Alex.
Thanks for tuning in and spreading the video/watching it and interacting with it. All that helps the analytics and most of all- the part I care most about, is that it just gets offered to be shown to more people
Wow, thank you. Xx
Were do keep getting all this info any subscription magazines or something? Can you tell me please 🙂? Thanks
I just have a mind that won't stop asking questions... like ever. Sort of obnoxious for those around me haha...my wife is a good sport, because about 10 times a day I'm saying "let's look that up and find out!".
I have to thank my grandfather and my university schooling for teaching me places to hunt for info.
Usually I start with a quick Google search and Wikipedia. Then look at their references at the bottom.... then search for those or related search terms and professor names.
Then I generally use Google scholar, or JSTOR and see what the latest science that has been published, has to say... then sort of make an outline of notes and key points... and finally come up with any secondary questions I have about what I find, using the same method all over again.
Time consuming, but it works fairly well, I feel. The key in my mind, is that I must always leave room for new information to take the place of current information- if the evidence seems to advocate it.
Thanks for staying curious, and watching!
@@Fishtory it's like me I'm always looking for something new that's why I love your videos. I do a lot of reading and research specially since I found I've got cancer. Most of my time I sent reading and learning the rest with the family 4 kids and the wife. Thanks for all your knowledge and videos. Keep the good work... Thanks.
@@brunoramos3402 I send you good thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
@@laurasutton4057 thank you so much... Really appreciate 🙏...
I have a question,
When a ramshorn snail fertilizes their own eggs(using their male part to fertilize their own eggs) , is this the worst form of incest? Or are they, as you said in 8:03, clones? Can they mate with their clones? Or do their clones reproduce on their own?
I know this isn't the case with malaysian trumpet snails, where they are truly parthenogenetic(no male fertilization required, the eggs just form and develop making clones).
It's both, but 98% of the time or something like that, they would clone if they didn't have a non related individual to mate with
I wonder why multiple reproduction methods within a species isn't more common. Most species don't have more than one method....are these alt.reproductive methods more error prone? More energy intensive?
Both of your guesses are correct
what are all those fish in this tank? please tell me their species names.
Celestial pearl danios and erythromicrons?
Are mystery snails LITERALLY apple snails or BASICALLY apple snails because if they're exactly the same we must change the name to sell them legally in my area because apple snails are allegedly illegal here
They are not all the same...sort of like a square is a type of rectangle, but a rectangle is not a type of square.
Most mystery snails ARE apple snails, but not all apple snails are mystery snails. There are 2 distinct species, but in the pet hobby they are often mistaken or misleadingly titled. It's best to ask for the Latin name if they can tell you. Sorry, I know this doesn't help much.
@@Fishtory that's very helpful thanks
Ive heard horror stories about those cloning crawfish
Also what are those plants at 18:21? The stem ones with the single leaf on top
