I've been following your advices on what to read next for the last two years (maybe more, I can't remember), and have never been disappointed. Thanks Jay. Happy new year to you and your family. Xx
I don’t understand how this channel isn’t blowing up…. The production quality and commentary are both brilliant… Best book tube channel imo. Keep it up my good man :)
I'm absolutely *_thrilled_* the past year or so to see the love that *The Dragonbone Chair* is getting from the younger set on BookTube; first Daniel (do I need to say Greene? really? LOL) and now you. I first read it around the time the series was coming out (I know I had to wait for *To Green Angel Tower* but I can't remember if I waited for *The Stone of Farewell* or not), and I fell in love with it. I wouldn't call it my favorite Fantasy series, but it has always been the Fantasy series that I described as "the most beautifully written genre fiction I have ever read." And yes, that includes all of the Science Fiction as well (and I've been reading SF&F _almost_ exclusively since around 1980 or so when I got hooked on the Narnia books which led to me getting hooked on Tolkien and eventually SciFi stuff as well). For years I tried spreading the word of Tad Williams stuff, and would occasionally find someone who had read him, but it was always his other stuff, never "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn." But now it seems to be making a bit of a resurgence, and just in time, as the second book in a follow up trilogy is currently out (I haven't gotten to it yet). It just makes me so happy to see Tad Williams get the recognition and love from the Fantasy fandom that he has so long deserved.
I'm so glad I found your channel (thanks, Merphy!) - your reading taste seems to match mine almost perfectly and, damn, your editing style is a category on itself! I adore Senlin books and Gentleman Bastard series are one of my favorites (hell, I even named my dog Lamora), and so good to find someone else who also enjoys Murakami! Hyped to see more videos from you :)
Everything on your list is either also on mine, or I haven't read it yet and it's on my list! Out of all BookTubers, you have the most similar tastes to me. Particularly agree about Senlin, First Law, Jurassic Park, and Deltora! Excited to get to Dragon Bone Chair.
@Ragnar Volorus with a name like Ragnar Volorus, I’d expect Red Rising to be your favorite sci-fi series lol. It’s definitely mine, and nothing else comes close.
Every time I hear about Senlin Ascends I feel like I need to pick it up. My TBR pile is just too massive at the moment (thanks Wheel of Time), but it's forever hovering on the horizon for me. Mysterious giant towers will always pique my curiosity
Haha I can relate to the massive ever-growing TBR pile 😅 Senlin Ascends is so great, I really want more people to know about it! It definitely has that mysterious vibe!
Really looking for that Remember reading Redwall! I can still remember some of the places I've read the books as a child, so fond childhood memories there. Also, now that I'm commenting, really appreciate the quality of your videos! You really stand out among the booktubers. Only you and Daniel have got me subscribe to their channel so I guess that's some kinda achievement :D Keep up the good work etc.!
Redwall is very nostalgic for me as well! I only ever read a handful of them growing up but they still stand out a lot in my memory. And thank you, I'm glad you like the videos! :D
Great as ever! A sarcastic and not sarcastic thank you for the state of my TBR list... * Sigh * (Wheel of Time, Way of Kings, Discworld and... Yeah I'll stop here). And to think a year ago I had nothing to read (that I knew of, yet). Three videos if yours in a week- am I dreaming? I just hope I'll remember that dream. Happy new year! 🎉
Rhythm of War was amazing! I’m looking foreword to the review but may I ask if you are going to do a video on the heralds- it’s one of the most fascinating part of the series.
Yay for Deltora Quest! 😁 Also, thanks for introducing me to Senlin Ascends. The series sounds really cool and I plan on reading it once the series is finished.
I finally picked up the Stormlight Archives and am just loving it, I wish I'd picked it up sooner. I also read Guards Guards this year and it was just a great time, I'll definitely be delving into more Pratchett. Happy new year!
@Ragnar Volorus Reading chronologically would probably mean starting with The Colour of Magic but I don't think that's a great place to start. Guards Guards is actually a pretty good starting point if you want to get into disc world, Mort is also a good starting point.
Deltora Quest is still slapping and honestly we have a great fandom community online. Even a huge wiki you can read, and help editing! The books are amazing, and though each one is rather simply written, together as a whole they great a long and complex story. And still each book has a lot of deep themes, just written about in a very straightfoward manner! To this day, Deltora Quest (both series 1, 2 and 3) is still my favorite books of all time.Books, not just childhood books.
Happy new year Jay! I would love to see a video from you on books about writing or producing screenplays for films etc. Two books that I really enjoy on writing include The Writers Journey by Christopher Vogler and The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker. There are many more like Save The Cat and On Writing by Stephen King etc. I just think 🤔 for book needs like us that most would really enjoy these to inspire our writing dreams.
Happy new year!! That's a good idea, actually I plan on reading a few more books on writing this year so I might think about doing some videos like that
PLEASE MAKE FIRST LAW VIDEOS! It’s my favorite series of all time and the first trilogy is fucking amazing and I kid you not when I say it gets better! Best Served Cold and the Age of Madness trilogy are just somehow getting better
Love that you got into Pratchett, he's my favorite author (especially Guards Guards!, Night Watch and Making Money are great imo) and doesn't seem to be discussed a lot on booktube so I would love to hear more about your thoughts on his books!
In general, your videos and the way you talk about books just always puts me in a reading mood. Combine that with these awesome recommendations and I’m just so excited to start a new reading year. Luckily I already have some of these on my shelves, like The Blade Itself and The Lies of Locke Lamora! But definitely adding new ones, because you’ve got me interested in Spinning Silver! Thank you for the wonderful videos! Happy new year!
So glad you started reading First Law! It’s my favorite series along with red rising. Joe’s character work is by far the best I’ve ever read! Can’t wait to see if you do any reviews on the series
I read the first four wheel of time. Looking forward to more. I’ve added the Joe Abercrombie series to my list. Any time you mention someone as being one of your favorite authors I know it’s something I’ll enjoy.
Yay for Spinning Silver and the Winternight trilogy, those were on my top 10 of the year as well. 😃 I'm also on book 4 of the WoT and need to continue in 2021, although I don't plan on finishing the series because I want to try some new-to-me authors as well, such as Joe Abercrombie. Good to see he was on your list!
DELTORA QUEST!! I was literally just thinking about those books this morning. The nostalgia for all the books I grew up reading (Deltora Quest, Pendragon by D.J. MacHale, Eragon, etc) is crazy high but I'm scared to go back and read them again because I don't want to ruin the memory by not enjoying them as much.
Some great books mentioned there! I’m currently reading The Blade Itself and loving it - I agree with the amount of humour - it’s fantastic! Senlin Ascends was one of my favourites of this year too. Locke Lamora is on my to read list for 2021 and I definitely want to check out The Original now based on your description of it. Happy New Year, Jay! 🎉
I'm a new subscriber here. I'm very happy to have discovered your channel. The content is top quality. I'm starting the new year with "The Books of Earthsea", on your recommendation. Love from India!!
Deltora Quest!!!! OMG this was part of my hole childhood, I love so much this series, but I had that fear of revisiting some books of my childhood and don't find them good as much as I did in the past
I'm actually super impressed at how well Deltora Quest still holds up! As I've been re-reading them, I'm noticing that I still enjoy them a lot as an adult and they're still super fun 😀
You plan on revisiting the Chronicles of Narnia for remember reading next year? I know I'm biased but I'd love for someone to show that series some love in booktube. P.S. speaking of kids books I truly think the Chronicles of Prydain would be right up your alley.
Yes I definitely plan on covering the Chronicles of Narnia! I reread them a lot as a kid so those books have a special place in my heart. Chronicles of Prydain is also on my list of books to cover! 😄
Wait... Hold on!!! Are you canadian?! Well, actually, it doesn't even matter to me. I am German and as Long as I understand your language, we are cool 😅 but now I am surprised. Further more: my favorite books EVER are The Name of the Wind and A Wise Mans' Fear. I read them in English and German and listen to the Audio books at least twice a year. I Love your Videos About Them and whenever you reccomend a fantasy book, i'll buy it, because I feel we have the Same taste in books (btw - i wanted to Name my daughter Auri, because of the Most incredible, enjoyable, likeable, mysterious Charakter EVER, but my hubby wasn't having it.) i guess what I am trying tobsay: i am a Big Fan!!! Please keep going! Happy new year from Germany. Jules
I love the Books of Babel and don't seem to see many on Booktube talking about them. Evan Winters books were good (although it was tough going getting into the first book). And Pratchett's discworld is brilliant. My favourite read this year was The Sword of Kaigen by M.L.Wang - although it was a bit slow to start it was worth persevering because this book was just so good and so incredibly painful too.
Damn... When you talked about WoT having an amazing execution of the chosen one trope some time ago, I really thought you already finished WoT! But now that I know that you don't, I'm really curious to see, how much wou will Love the series, when the character development really kicks in! Have fun with it! And Happy New Year to y'all!
Lol. Mention of Deltora Quest triggered some old memories. I bought them for my children in the 90's which led to more books for the wait between Potter books. My eldest, a 30 year old man now, still has most books. Deltora Quest, The Secrets of Droon, Goosebumps, Horrible Histories, etc.. and my youngest still has all the Erin Hunter Warriors books she fell in love with and started her fantasy reading which continues to this day.
Ahhh I have such good memories with those books! I read a lot of Goosebumps too, but Deltora Quest was always my favorite growing up, I re-read that series a lot. Good for you getting your children into reading! 👍
I was also surprised by the humor in Joe Abercrombie's Blade. I was told how horrible and grim and dark and violent it was, and I found myself giggling at some of the jokes... reminded me of Terry Pratchett. And he is my absolute favorite author, so that's a high praise :-D It's the wisdom, heart, great compassion and understanding, and the wicked twisty humor, and the characters... and the references... his knowledge was vast! I caught quite a lot of them, but I know I missed about half :-D (There is or at least was a website dedicated to the references in Discworld books... wonderful.) His best books are almost holy scripts to me, the worst books are still good. I am so happy he wrote so many books before he died, and still his passing was a huge loss to me. :´( The worst in Kafka was the animal abuse... brrr... and it was horrible that he couldn't talk with them after he killed the... man-thing what ever it was.
I actually just started reading Senlin Ascends last night, and I'm enjoying it, thus far! I'm a hard sell on Tad Williams, though, as Otherland was decidedly not a favorite of mine. An impenetrable slog, is how I remember it. Maaaybe I'll check out Dragonbone Chair, someday. As far as "Remember Reading..." candidates, maybe things like Tintin, Winnie the Pooh, and Jedi Apprentice/Quest, at some point? Are fantasy elements a must, or just general whimsy?
Awesome, hope you enjoy Senlin Ascends as much as I did! Dang that sucks about the Otherland being a slog, I'll have to try some other books by Williams to see what I think. Nope fantasy isn't a must, it could be any type of fiction. Those are great recommendations, I'll keep those ones in mind for my 'Remember Reading' series!
Otherland was a slog? Wow. I loved it. His other major series is Shadowmarch, where the territory of Fae-type creatures continues to encroach on the territory of Man. I really enjoyed it.
@@Rogue_VI To each their own, and it's admittedly been a few years. I just remember being sooo bored with Williams' tangents and overexplained worldbuilding in Otherland. It barely felt like I was even reading a story, at some points. Between that and being spoiled on the end of another of his series (I forget which), that honestly sounded underwhelming to the point of insulting, I've never felt the need to pick up a Tad Williams tome again. That said, I'm glad you like them! Someone should. It'd just take a lot of convincing for me to give his work another shot, and I don't think anyone has the time to make that their full-time job.
@@EhsJaySaunders That's how I feel about Discworld. I read the first 4 and hated them. I was so bored and no amount of convincing will get me to try again. Unless that convincing comes in the form of monetary inducements. I might be persuaded by that.
@@Rogue_VI I believe I've only tried one Discworld entry. Carpe Jugulum, as I recall? I thought it was...fine, but it didn't compel to pick up any more. People have told me I was ill-fated to start with that one, though, so I should probably at least give the series another shot.
Of the books you read this year that I have read, I don't think I read any of them this year. I may have read First Law early in the year, but I wasn't tracking reading dates at the time, so I don't remember. My best books of the year: First Formic War trilogy (Card); Dragonships of Vindras trilogy (Weis and Hickman); Monster Hunter Memoirs trilogy (Correia and Ringo); The Psalms of Isaak books 1-3 (Scholes) - I'll finish this series in January/February.
Thanks to you my to-read list is waaay too long. But as it often is, instead of reading something new I'm rereading Kingkiller Chronicle. Ah, the brilliance... I guess Dresden Files have been a revelation this year. It's by no means perfect, it's quite cheesy, but it's absolutely captivating.
One of my favorite books this year was The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (Sarah Monette). It was a re-read and it held up. Also Murderbot. Always a fave.
Wait I’m so excited for Remember Reading because there’s so many series I remember reading but don’t remember the name of the book/series.... there’s one in particular I’m dying to find about a boy who rides a giant bear and there’s a floating city....
@@CapturedInWords The last couple of pages are going to leave you craving for the 5th book. I cant wait to see your reaction! And something unprecedented happens! (Keep your eyes open for mistborn stuff ;)
I read Kafka on the Shore a few years ago and what a trip it is. I really liked most of the story, but yeah, there are definitely some scenes that didn’t reeeeally need to be in it. But then again this Murakami we are talking about here. What is one of his books without an uncertain-if-I’m-ok-with-this sensual encounter?
Hahaha you described it perfectly! The weird sensual encounters were a bit unsettling 😅 but overall it was such a weird and interesting read. I definitely want to read more Murakami, I'm thinking of starting Norwegian Wood next
My favorite was Rhythm of War, no surprise. Beyond that there were some other surprises like Twilight Falling by Paul Kemp and Azure Bonds, reread The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
I recommend Walter Moers' Zamonia novels. They're bricks but I assure you, well worth it! It's genius lies in language and world building with good and whimsical characters and solid stories. There's a lot of obvious and not-so-obvious allusions to tropes in story telling and storytelling rules are broken regularly in fun ways
It's a pretty good book. Hopefully you can start reading some more soon! Sometimes when I take a break from reading it stops being a habit for me, which makes it hard to get back into. But once reading becomes a daily habit it's hard to stop
I made it to book six in the wheel of time series and I just had to let it go nothing changes and it just drags .... Kind of a let down as the series starts strong but I really got the feeling Robert Jordan was just milking the series
Would love to hear your thoughts on some more sci-fi! You have a great mind for digging into what makes a book great.
I definitely plan on reading more sci-fi this year, the one's that are on top of my list are The Murderbot Diaries, Dune, and The Expanse 👍
I bought Dune after Xmas in preparation for the movie 🎥 🍿
I remember feeling disappointed by the old movie but look forward to the new one soon.
Part of the reason comes down to the stellar cast assembled. Plus the vision and cinematography so far shown in first trailer.
The god reviewer Daniel greene chiming in
You need to make more videos. Highest quality book channel by far.
I wholeheartedly agree!
The quality of your videos are unmatched, bro. Also, great list!
Thanks Petrik!
This year has been terrible, but your content has stayed top notch. Keep it up, man. Happy new year!
Thank you! Happy new year!

Spinning silver is on my list for this year so hearing your thoughts has made me even more excited!
Awesome, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Omg I loved the deltora quest books as a kid nice to know someone else has read these
Deltora Quest is a real throwback! I used to love that series ❤️❤️
I'm surprised at how well it holds up, it's still such a fun series!
Everything on your list is either also on mine, or I haven't read it yet and it's on my list! Out of all BookTubers, you have the most similar tastes to me.

Wow, am I hyped to hear you talk about Ranger's Apprentice
Add the Red Rising trilogy to your 2021 TBR. I read them then read them this year!
Yes, yes. Great series of books. Man, I wanted those characters to be real so badly. Felt just like I knew them.
@Ragnar Volorus with a name like Ragnar Volorus, I’d expect Red Rising to be your favorite sci-fi series lol. It’s definitely mine, and nothing else comes close.
@Ragnar Volorus I finished Dark Age a few days ago and I am still recovering emotionally from it. Pierce Brown is an evil genius.
This channel is severely underrated
Ya think? LOL
oh wow Deltorra, what a throwback. Looking forward to that series!
Your video editing skillz are so sick. 🔥
Thanks!
I am starting SEnlin Ascends in January and I am quite excited. My friend Allen has hyped it up SO much and I have super high hopes.
Hope you enjoy it!
Editing is on point
Thanks!
Whoa! A Haruki Murakami book made in this list. His books are beloved by a lot of folks here in the Philippines. 💗👍
That's awesome! I look forward to reading more Murakami this year! 😀
Been with your channel for awhile now. Your content is consistently amazing. Keep it up!
Thank you! Will do!

That's awesome!! I hope you enjoy The Books of Babel! Happy New Year Megan! 😀
Ah Deltora Quest! Loved the series growing up! I think I got my hands on pretty much every Deltora related book that I could.
Same here!!
Tad Williams' prose is always stunning.
Oooh I really did enjoy senlin ascends this year!! I feel like it could be a great studio Ghibli movie 🔥
Ahh I'd love to see Studio Ghibli adapt it, that would be amazing!
I love Deltora Quest. I remember buying the whole set because I was bored. I did not expect to be so immersed in it.
absolutely one of my favourite channels this year. keep up the amazing work, mate!
Thanks, will do! 😀
Get the RoW review up. Need to discuss the leader of the Ghostbloods.
Ahahah, I see you

Great as ever! A sarcastic and not sarcastic thank you for the state of my TBR list... * Sigh * (Wheel of Time, Way of Kings, Discworld and... Yeah I'll stop here). And to think a year ago I had nothing to read (that I knew of, yet).
Three videos if yours in a week- am I dreaming? I just hope I'll remember that dream.

You can definitely expect some First Law videos this year!! I plan on getting completely caught up with all the Abercrombie books
Body found in the docks, floating in the water. I am in the middle of Last Argument as well and the inner monologue of Glokta is great
I'm on the first 100 pages of The Last Argument of Kings and hating/loving Glokta!
Love that you got into Pratchett, he's my favorite author (especially Guards Guards!, Night Watch and Making Money are great imo) and doesn't seem to be discussed a lot on booktube so I would love to hear more about your thoughts on his books!

Love the channel. Keep it going strong in 2021
Thank you, will do! I'm planning for this year to be the busiest on the channel!
Thanks Jay for the great content!
Tad Williams is an excellent writer. I am hoping he puts more stories out there. Enjoy your channel!
Deltora Quest!!! I would love to see Jennifer Rowe's works being talk about more, or at least at all, by the Booktube community, she is AMAZING.
So happy to see Abercrombie in the list! Happy New Year's Jay!
Abercrombie is amazing, definitely a new favorite! Happy new year Sergio!

And Happy New Year to y'all!
I will read these books and this video was amazing thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
@@CapturedInWords yes dear your great.
Loving the recent uploads. Keep it up, Jay!
Thanks, will do!
Yeeeees Deltora Quest! Best childhood book memories.
Mine too! I'm surprised at how well it holds up!
Intro slaps!
The worst in Kafka was the animal abuse... brrr... and it was horrible that he couldn't talk with them after he killed the... man-thing what ever it was.
Rhythm of War is my favourite book and next is Emperor's Soul. Followed by Knight's Shadow, The Shadow Rising and The Dragon Reborn.
I’m in BC and I got my Leatherbound on the 21st, hopefully yours arrives soon!
I'm in BC too, dang maybe I'll try contacting Sanderson's company😬
@@CapturedInWords Might be a good idea, I also know another person from here who received it on the same day.
Kafka on the Shore made my top 10 this year and the Wheel of Time was #1.
Great taste!
Lot of good books this year. Too bad I'm not a Tad Williams fan, but most of the rest I've read and enjoyed.
The Goblin Emperor is fantastic! I've been recommended Murderbot a lot, I'll have to check that series out sometime
Man I love your content nd I always wait for your new videos...
Wait I’m so excited for Remember Reading because there’s so many series I remember reading but don’t remember the name of the book/series.... there’s one in particular I’m dying to find about a boy who rides a giant bear and there’s a floating city....
I'm very curious to know what that book is now! who doesn't love giant bears and floating cities???
Locke Lamora is already planned to be my first read of 2021!!
That's awesome!! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Man you rock!
I really hope your channel grows more!!
Keep up the good work!
And happy 2021! 🌲🌲🌲
Did you finish rhythm of war?
Thanks, and happy new year! Only 50 pages left in Rhythm of War, so I'll be finished today probably! :D
Canadian here, I haven't even received my poster yet so don't worry 😢 I am in the Feb group though......
I just checked the website and turns out my copy is not estimated to deliver until April 😥 hope you'll get your poster soon!
My favorite was Rhythm of War, no surprise. Beyond that there were some other surprises like Twilight Falling by Paul Kemp and Azure Bonds, reread The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Happy new year!
Happy new year mate , love from india.
Happy new year!
Sooo many more books on the tbr .... ahhh ... read 32 this year :)
Dawnshard was alright. Like a 7/10
My son and I squirmed in fright through watching Jurassic Park, he loved it!
Hahaha that was probably the same as me when I watched it as a kid, it has some scary scenes! Glad he enjoyed it!
Hi there! Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!!
I read jurassic park a few years ago, it is great. but you JUST read it THIS YEAR?!
I had no idea Jurassic Park was a book until years after the movies had come & gone. (I still haven't seen the movies either!)
Yeah I didn't really know it was a book for quite awhile too 😅
Ha Ha. How Canadian, tells audience: Like! And Subscribe! Just do it!! ...but only if you want to.
Got to have manners, of course 😉
Read Jurassic Park before the movie years ago. I'm ashamed to say that since I retired I haven't read as much as I have wanted.
It's a pretty good book. Hopefully you can start reading some more soon! Sometimes when I take a break from reading it stops being a habit for me, which makes it hard to get back into. But once reading becomes a daily habit it's hard to stop
Michael Chricton is an amazing author, read Timeline!
you should read "hard boiled wonderland" by haruki murakami but avoid "1Q84"
This was too notch
I made it to book six in the wheel of time series and I just had to let it go nothing changes and it just drags ....
Kind of a let down as the series starts strong but I really got the feeling Robert Jordan was just milking the series
Have you already read anything by Will Wight? Mainly, Cradle? :) I think you'd enjoy it a lot!
No I haven't! I've seen his books talked about on reddit a lot and I think I have the ebook for Unsouled so I'll add that to my list this year
Happy New Year 2021 people 🙃
