- The NH90 NFH (NATO Frigate Helicopter) has been in service with 40 Squadron (40SQN) of the Belgian Air Force at Koksijde Air Base for 10 years, marking a decade of advanced maritime and search and rescue operations. First introduced in 2014 as the successor to the iconic Sea King Mk48, the NH90 NFH brought cutting-edge technology and versatility to the squadron’s operations.
Designed specifically for naval and maritime missions, the NH90 NFH excels in all-weather Search and Rescue (SAR), anti-submarine warfare, and maritime patrols. Its advanced avionics, powerful engines, and modern sensors allow it to perform missions in the most demanding conditions, including night operations and low-visibility environments. Equipped with a full glass cockpit, advanced radar systems, and a powerful winch, the NH90 NFH has significantly enhanced 40SQN’s operational capabilities over the past decade.
In its first 10 years of service, the NH90 NFH has been deployed for a wide range of missions, from rescue operations in the North Sea to supporting naval operations and international exercises. Its ability to operate both from land and at sea, including from naval vessels, has made it an essential asset in the Belgian Air Force’s fleet.
While it continues the proud tradition of 40SQN in search and rescue, the NH90 NFH has proven itself as a modern, reliable, and highly capable helicopter, ensuring the squadron remains at the forefront for years to come.
