- How long does cotton candy last in a bag? We discuss shelf life for a standard 3mil plastic bag, mylar bag, a liquid tight sealed container and out in free air. The thickness and seal of the packaging, humidity, room temperature and vibration all will greatly affect how long cotton candy will last.

Hi, I live in South Carolina and it's hot and humid so I need to make my cotton candy at home per your other video, because it will melt and get sticky fast. So what can I use to package the cotton candy in ? And will it last in the hot humid heat while I'm selling it at farmers market and places like that outside ? Love your videos and very helpful too. So it is not necessary to add some kind of "desicant/silica packs" within the package to extend shelf life?
I made the cotton candy from regular sugar without any other ingredients (pre-mixed sugar floss is not available in my country), will it affect the shelf life?

Hi there! You do not need to add a silica pack, you just need to protect the cotton candy as well as you possibly can from humidity and air. Regular sugar will work just as well as premixed sugar floss.
Thanks for the reply Dana! One more thing, about flavouring and coloring, after I mixed the sugar with fruit juice/concentrate, how to dry the sugar without turning it into caramel?
I have tried to pan-roast the sugar and put it in oven, but the sugar is still not as dry as it should be...
I'm afraid i will turn it into caramel if i put more heat on the sugar...

Are there any good eco friendly way of packaging up cotton candy for a business ?
Unfortunately, we have not been able to find anything due to how protected cotton candy needs to be. The containers we use are dishwasher, freezer and microwave safe, we try to encourage people to reuse them.

Into a plastic cup? There may be a good film that can be heat sealed onto the top of the cup.

The shelf life can be over one month, you just need to make sure your bag or container is thick enough to create a great barrier from air, also, your seal will need to be really tight as well.
What about the ordinary plastic bags , used by street vendors, what is the self life ?
Generally a few days. Really depends on the thickness of the bag and the seal.

Yes, we have some (for testing purposes only) that has lasted 5 years.

It should last for 24 hours. If you have a large container, I would put all the filled bags in a large container with a lid on it.
Cotton wool can be stored in a plastic container with a lid for up to 6 months.

The humidity can be incredibly difficult!
I shipped cotton candy to someone in Florida recently. I shrunk up and I had to refund them. I don't see any way to prevent this because it was sealed well in a ziploc bag and packaged well with padding. Should I just not try to ship it at all? I can't afford to keep refunding.
Why not used nitrogen gas for extending self life of cotton candy
It's definitely an option. Machine cost is where that will be a hinder for a lot of people.
