- More than a year has passed since the clandestine bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. Yet what really happened in September of 2022 remains as murky as the waters near the seafloor.
Who was behind this act of sabotage? Was it ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, or did the US government have something to do with it? Can the people who carried it out be traced to Ukraine? For months, a large team of journalists worked to track down the alleged culprits. They spoke with investigators and researchers while looking into a variety of theories and motives - to find answers to one of the most secret acts of sabotage of our time.
The joint research conducted by the ARD-Hauptstadtstudio, political TV program "Kontraste”, public broadcaster SWR and newspaper "DIE ZEIT” - along with international partners - sheds light on how the attacks were prepared.

my main problem the seismic evidence
first evidence of the nordstream ruptures were earthquakes with agnitudes above 2 and implied a large amount of explosives (stated around 500kg tnt equivalent each time) therefore the sailing boat theory was quite implausible....
unless the earthquakes resulted from the breaking of the pipelines (pressurized at 200bar buried under the sand

It was U.S.A that blew them up. Why would Russia (that owns the pipelines) do it when they had the leverage to control it, and on the other hand would have been detected since its sourronded by NATO countries. Idont even know why theres a documentary on this topic since its so got damn obvious.

Seymore Hirsch is specializing in fake news.
They can't give actual examples, because then you could investigate and prove them wrong. We've seen this 100 times in the last few years. They'll try and smear or discredit someone and say they are spreading "misinformation", without actually saying what specifically is misinformation. They did it during COVID. They did it during the Ukraine/Russia conflict. They did it here. To anyone who actually pays attention, it's pretty obvious who did (even if indirectly). I'd start with the ones who said they'd do it (on more than one occasion). Who are also the same ones who said they wanted to supply Europe with energy about 10 years ago (Condoleezza Rice mentioned it in an interview). Who also said a big threat to the US would be the coming together of Germany's technology and Russia's cheap energy.
What were the 'provably false' details in the Seymour Hersh version of events? It would have been useful to point out where he was wrong rather than to blithely assert that his story was wrong.
It is now paywalled. I can remember some nonsense about Norwegian P-8 planes (that were not in regular service at the time).
The very fact that he refers some "anonymous" sources only, stinks too much.

People, do you remember what happened few days after the bombing of NS? The Russian said that they some technical problems with providing gas to Italy. Remember that? Only few people understood that it was message. A message, that "we do not need to blow up our pipelines. All we need is to say we have technical problems and thats it." It was a message to the whole world that the Russian did not do it. The US and Norway did.

Exactly. Russia did the same with NS too - technical problems and no gas. That was simple and flexible solution to a problem with a wide range of possibilities. The United States blew up the pipeline to forever cut off Europe from cheap gas and ruin European industry.
"Technical problems" is not a sufficient excuse for removing liability in most commercial contracts. Gazprom tried that with a "faulty" compressor a few weeks earlier.
They claimed that the compressor could not be repaired in Russia and that it would have to be shipped to Germany or Canada. To do this sanctions would have to be lifted.
Siemens rejected Gazprom's information and stated that the faulty compressor could be repaired in Russia during routine maintenance and, that there was redundancy in the gas compression system.

Repair will cost many times more than any possible penalty. Anyway, USA already "confirmed" it was Ukraine. Of course they lie as always, ukrainian simpletons would never able to do this. I used to scuba - 90' a few times. 200'+ with scuba is not believable. 15 min. at the depth and you'd need extra tanks and air to get back up without the nitro in your blood blowing. This doc. is a lie - from start to finish. DW is an intelligence asset.
Good point. They were using a helium oxygen mixture but they stiil had to me decompression stops requiring lots of extra equipment like compressors for the divers. I really cant see all that equipment on a sailboat.
Wikipedia point out NW1 & NW2 is sitting around 80m to 110m seabed.
Recreational diver can reach 120ft (40m) without problem.
Commercial Diver reaching 120m, exposing the protection linning (1m deep rock protection layer say) then stick C4 on the pipe surface for remote denotation is technical flexible without great difficulty

These divers would be using gas mixes just as stated in the video.
There are a few major inconsistencies. The calculation expert said that 50kg of explosives should be enough to cause a leak in the pipes. I agree on that possibility, but there are 2 extra circumstances, which had to be reproduced. The pipes have been deformed enormously, and additionally an earthquake of 2 had been recorded at a fair distance from the explosions. You can adjust the power and location of explosion until everything is reproduced correctly.
Recently a baltic pipe was damaged causing a leak, but no earthquake was recorded. So the leak itself and release of internal pressure would not result in an earthquake. An earthquake is clearly an indication of a massive explosion.
The calculations should be interpreted as 50kg or more, very much more. Given the other two circumstances, even 500kg might not be enough. Collecting, transporting and placing tons of explosives is another cup of tea.
There are more flaws, however. The investigators "conveniently" forgot that a few years prior to the attack Russians found an American underwater drone laying on a pipe very close to the future explosion site. This "convenient" loss of memory is meant to carry you away from "inconvenient" conclusions. Not to mention that president Biden said openly to the press that US would "stop" the North stream.
Let us review the consequences. Did Russia lose from this attack? To a certain extent, because Russia invested not only into the pipes, but also into the infrastructure. But the damage is not massive, because Russia has increased production of LNG. This also required investments, so you can also consider it as a loss. For the people who still accuse Russia of a possible foot-shooting there is a simple answer. When sabotage of the pipes occurred, there was a massive leakage of gas you could all see. The amount of leaked gas corresponds to annual consumption of gas by Denmark. So those who accuse Russia would literally accuse her of throwing money into the air. Did Germany lose from the attack? Clearly, because Germany also invested into that project and lost access to the cheap Russian gas. As a result Germany is in recession. Did US win? Absolutely, US is the winner here, because they are able to sell American gas for at least 3-4 times higher price to Germany. While Russia was present on the gas market, US had no chance. US was always (!) against the North stream and did everything to impede construction of the pipeline. Russian LNG is reaching Europe, which affects the gas prices, so US is now trying to impede production and delivery of Russian LNG. Did Ukraine win? Barely, because Russia is able to deliver gas to remaining European customers through Turkey. Also, the increased production of Russian LNG makes Ukrainian pipelines irrelevant. As a result of the attack, Russia is turning to the East and South. So Ukraine is losing its logistical appeal and a substantial amount of income. It appears that US is the only winner here, and Biden did not tell a lie for once.

Nothing happens in the Baltic Sea without bordering countries knowing exactly what is going on. So then you have to ask the question. How many of them were ok with it happening and just looked the other way. And after all it doesn't matter who planted the explosives, what matters is who gave the order and paid for it all.

Also, just a few years earlier, Sweden was going ape when the Russians were said to have been sighted suspiciously near to their undersea Internet cables.
Whenever a Russian presence is sighted there and it’s believed that their motives are questionable, those Baltic countries are very vocal about it. And yet here, as you said, it seems that everyone looked the other way ... just like they were told to.
I’m not a Russian apologist. But lying about this stuff to try and justify further involvement to the public increases the chances of this conflict getting irretrievably out of hand at some future point, with the attendant risk of a nuclear conflict.
With so many geo-political hotspots currently in turmoil, it’s not hard to envisage a coalition of Eastern and Islamic countries fighting against Nato.

Most of Europe’s lng comes from Norway, Qatar, and China (middle manning because europeans are dumb).
That still doesn't mean it was done by the US. It doesn't have to destroy a gas pipeline connecting Russia to Germany.
The US can use its sanctions power and other forms of economic warfare to achieve the same results.
Germany is also a US ally protected by America. The US doesn't attack other NATO states.

I'm not sure what airplane that was down, or why you're thinking it would trigger a military conflict between two countries with a mutual-defense treaty.
In 2016, Turkey shot down a Russian fighter jet that breached its airspace. That wasn't an act of war either.
@DW Documentary You failed to consider the testimony by the Ex Navy Seal Team Leader who was reported by TVP World. He stated that the job was impossible to perform from a sailboat. The job would be ideally performed from a submarine. That would also not be visible from a satellite. From looking at the photos of the damaged pipelines it was blown up with shaped charges. The submarine escape trunk would fit the charges and divers (2). It would also serve as a decompression chamber when the job was finished. It would be at depth and at the location requiring little time for the dive limiting the required decompression. The submarine would have equipment to locate the pipelines, and could relocate without anyone being aware on the surface. This was needed for the various locations needed. This was clearly a well planned military operation.

The Swedish ship was sent to investigate a Russian submarine loitering in the immediate area. It was tracked into Russian waters off Kaliningrad.

One pipe remaining means, there is in fact 50% of the previous supplied capacity available, so it's not the case no gas can be supplied, if desired by Germany.

Given the need for quite long dives, I'd have thought it was quite obvious from AIS ship data if anyone hung around over the bombed locations at the right times. This report could have been a lot more detailed about ship movements. Obviously relatively small yachts may not have AIS, or have it turned on, in which case we don't know exactly where they've been.

A Russian who turned out to be a spy bought equipment to determine thickness of gas pipes for $100K from a Norwegian company a couple of months before the pipelines blew up. Explain that.

Someone may have sabotaged the pipeline, or, someone may have hit the wrong button. This type of damage can be caused by momentarily closing a valve and then opening it again after realizing your mistake.

From a technical point of view this investigation is totally flawed. If you do modelling of a certain event, you have to reproduce all the consequences accurately, namely: enormous deformation of pipes, earthquake of 2 and a massive leakage of gas that could be seen for weeks from miles away. Here they only speak about a leakage (not a massive leakage) and 50kg of explosives which could cause that leakage. Would 50kg cause such a destruction of pipes? Would it cause an earthquake of 2 at a fair distance of the explosion? They did not even look into it, or they did look into it, but this would not produce the desired result. There was a leakage in the Baltic gas pipe recently. There was no earthquake recorded and there was no white gas spot on the sea surface. So just having a leakage does not necessarily lead to an earthquake. You obviously need a substantially larger amount of explosives, maybe over a ton, for each explosion. This would make it totally unpractical to do it with a small yacht and a handful of divers.
There are more flaws, however. The investigators "conveniently" forgot that a few years prior to the attack Russians found an American underwater drone laying on a pipe very close to the future explosion site. This "convenient" loss of memory is meant to carry you away from "inconvenient" conclusions. Not to mention that president Biden said openly to the press that US would "stop" the North stream.
Let us review the consequences. Did Russia lose from this attack? To a certain extent, because Russia invested not only into the pipes, but also into the infrastructure. But the damage is not massive, because Russia has increased production of LNG. This also required investments, so you can also consider it as a loss. Did Germany lose from the attack? Clearly, because Germany also invested into that project and lost access to the cheap Russian gas. As a result Germany is in recession. Did US win? Absolutely, US is the winner here, because they are able to sell American gas for at least 3-4 times higher price to Germany. While Russia was present on the gas market, US had no chance. US was always (!) against the North stream and did everything to impede construction of the pipeline. Russian LNG is reaching Europe, which affects the gas prices, so US is now trying to impede production and delivery of Russian LNG. Did Ukraine win? Barely, because Russia is able to deliver gas to remaining European customers through Turkey. Also, the increased production of Russian LNG makes Ukrainian pipelines irrelevant. As a result of the attack, Russia is turning to the East and South. So Ukraine is losing its logistical appeal and a substantial amount of income. It appears that US is the only winner here, and Biden did not tell a lie for once.
At least from the perspective of an ignorant and layman, I'd say that yacht and that crew were used specifically to create this noise and suspicion. If those were really the culprits, we would never know.
It was really a fishing vessel dragged the bomb right onto the pipeline.
