- Since Russia’s invasion, Ukraine has banned men of fighting age from leaving the country unless they have a valid exemption.
A BBC Eye investigation found nearly 20,000 men have fled the country illegally since the beginning of the war to avoid being drafted.
A further 21,000 have tried to leave but were caught by the Ukrainian authorities.

used to be very pro Ukrainian when the war started, I still think they are the lesser of two evils compared to Russia who isn't going to fix any of the problems in the region if they somehow win... (which seems unlikely) but seeing the rampant corruption in the country, the fact they've banned all political opposition and their shady dealings with the US Democrats I've become rather alienated from the Ukrainian side...
The Russians are much much worse, they now straight up openly admit to the deportation and forced re-education of Ukrainian children now, which is beyond barbaric, and the war is a blatant distraction from Russia's domestic problems so for that reason I still hope the Russians loose and Putin's dictatorship is overthrown. More than anything though I just hope the conscripts can go home to their families and the civilians are keeping their heads down.

I personally decided to leave because I did not want to tolerate discrimination based on nationality and language, since I think (dream) in Russian. There is also an ideological moment. These channels don’t really report it. But Russia has done massive work in trying to get Ukrainians to surrender. Almost all (not all of course as they are some outliers) of the surrendered are treated well, of course unless you’re part of Azov.

What they don't tell you - many of those men are Ukranian citizens but are ethnically russians, have russian roots, relatives in Russia etc. At least 1.5 million of Ukranian refugees went to Russia, there is a total about 6 millions Ukranians living in Russia now. While for some people it's offence and defence, there are many others for whom it's a complicated story of a brother turned against a brother by other people's blind hate, indoctrination meant to fulfill geopolitical ambitions. Absolutely not all men trying to flee from Russia and Ukraine are cowards. If more people refused to fight the war they dont understand maybe there would be less wars.

While on vacation in Poland this summer, I saw thousands of of young Ukrainian men dodging draft. Clearly, defending their country is not on their minds.
