My first and only pigs , so far, are Meishan...the meat is very good, its one of the rarest and oldest breed...I dont think I could have picked a better starting breed either as they have been very easy to deal with and are not at all aggressive...more like puppy dogs lol
@@GatorMike79 the nose rings have hooks into the nose and if they try to root/dig then it pulls on the hooks. Could think of it as a very big splinter. Doesnt hurt as long as you dont press/push on it.
Were those weened pigs headed to market? Do you have any tips for finding good buyers? I would like to start an operation like this. Probably start this fall or next year on my new property. I'm not yet settled on a breed. I'm in NW Arkansas.
the piglets I already have customers for but yes. Local online groups like on facebook, craigslist, posters at your local feed store etc etc. I HIGHLEY suggest going with registered berkshire or mangalitsa. At least unregistered to start and eventually get a registered group when you figure out the markets. Start with the best, initial investment on the pigs is only $100-200 more, yet the feed and most importantly TIME cost is the same. Yet your end product for yourself and others is a much higher quality and of course price. I started this as a hobby for myself.
very good young man...young fellers like you give us hope for the future...thank you

Great video! So a ring in the pig's nose keeps them from rooting up the ground??
Thats correct!

@@Rowow Thanks. Sounds like wise advise. I love your channel!
I'm in SW FL, have you ever trapped and raised wild piglets? I'm thinking of raising myself some pork. We'll see.
I have and it's not worth it. The meat quality is terrible
Do you keep the male separate from the sows?
Currently no as I plan to move them. However I need to as the boar eats a little too much.
What breed are the animals?
Berkshire
@@Rowow Great
