Wow! On top of the wonderful butler method - - - 1: Don’t topstitch lining to zipper ribbon, 2: Sew across lining, then rip open seam. You’ve just greatly improved my bags going forward - Thanks!!
You have no idea how much I struggled with zippers before!! The frustration stinted my creativity and desire to sew. If I had to rank best videos of all time, this one would be in the top 10!!! 🥰
I finished my bag today and I wanted to say that a couple of the tips shared should be used by all. First, the tip about sewing the lining seam at 3/8” and the actual bag seam at 1/4”. This works really well because it does make the lining fit nicely and easily inside the bag. And the other tip is sewing the bag lining on the bottom and backstitching in the two places and then pulling the stitches out in the middle in order to birth the bag. This works great because once you have finished birthing the bag and are ready to sew up that seam the fabric will fold inside naturally and then you just sew it shut. Those are two great ideas and they work! Thanks, Amy Lynne.
Thank goodness I found this tutorial, my search for the best zipper pouch has also ended. I learned SO much this one tutorial. And your presentation is perfect!!! Can't wait to check out your other videos!! :o)
I absolutely love this method....omg, it’s like a lightbulb has gone off in my head! I’ve made so many pouches but this one is the neatest by far! Thank you.
New to sewing zippers so this is very useful. Thank you, and thanks for trimming your curves with pinking shears. I don't know why more sewists don't do this.
i have watched many, I mean mannny sewing videos and yours, my dear, tips and explanations are the best and clearest with all the why and how of all. thank you.
Truly appreciated your tutorial, You explain everything ih detail with just right amount of instruction and not a lot of extra verbiage; thank you for that, PLUS, I have been looking for weeks on how to avoid those "dents at the bag opening and you educated me on how to avoid that by not topstitching the lining!! Seriously, wasn't looking for that here, just the Butler method, so bonus for me after futile attempts of searching. Lucky I found your video, Thank you, thank yoiu , thank you!!
I've done this great method so many times now I don't have to watch the video but I just came to see if you had any new videos😂. I now like doing the Butler Method with 1/2" instead of 3/4" and cut the zipper tape a little long so I can just pull the zipper with my hands or a stiletto. I've never had the Butler method fail me🙂 Thanks
With 60+ years of sewing under my belt it is always good to be open to new things. Your video was so easy to follow and as you said at the end "gives a professional finish". Thank you.👍🏻
Excellent demo of the method and sewing with simplicity and speed. I hate wasted steps and unnecessary methods and pressing. You show the professional essence! I am going to watch your video again and try it with a quilted digItal reader bag. Thank you!
Mahalo... great tutorial!!! Clarifying the why of not to topstitch the lining makes it easy to remember and not slip back to sewing it. I am amazed at all the techniques of the Butler Method. Again Mahalo!
This is the very best zipper pouch tutorial that I have ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing this wondeful Video on The Butler Method! life alot easier. No more bulky seams against the top zipper closure, and my wristlet clutch bags have a more professional finish. Thanks, Teresa!
Thank you for sharing this video. So helpful. I'd never heard of the butler method before and gotta say it's a neat professional finish. So guess my way to making a bag has just ended. Especially with not sewing through the bag and lining on the topstitching is a must for me to try. I'll also be checking out your other tutorials.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the tutorial! If you ever worry about the lining catching in the zipper, after your sew it all up press the lining fabric away from the zipper and use a clapper or any old piece of wood to absorb the heat and set the press you just made. It works like a charm! Wawak has 3 sizes of Clappers. The small is a great size for most bags! www.wawak.com/pressing-spotting/pressing-accessories/wawak-tailor-clapper-red-oak/#sku=bo109
Brilliantly executed. I must master this! I am so sick of making a bag when I get to the very last part having to sew over the zipper tabs I get so stressed out.
Amy, I remember from another video you mentioned an Etsy shop that you like for YKK zippers, but now I cannot find that info. Which shop is it? Thank you for all your help. Love the Butler method.
This is a great video. I have learned a couple of good techniques from it. I’m in the middle of making this bag and so far it’s turning out really well. I love that I learned a new method regarding the butler method. It’s really easy and I like that it doesn’t need a tab on the end. Tabs can be tedious to make so they turn out looking professional. The butler method solves that issue for me. Thanks, Amy.
This is my second time watching your video,I made my pouch the first time and your detailed descriptions are wonderful. I found my double sided tapes at Dollar Tree. Thanks
I just found your channel ! I can t stop watching your videos ! Really so helpful specially for me.as a new bags maker . i found some tricks i made also without knowing that this is the good way to do it . Thank you for sharing all your knowladge with us ! All the respect from Tunisia .
Not only is your video crisp and clear, it’s one of the best explanations of the butler method I love and use score tape also. I’m so happy to have found your channel.
Nice tutorial! LOL, Did not know there was a name for this technique. It's not bag related but this is how I do the top part of my zippers (the folding over) when making jackets.
I started doing it out of my laziness. I named it after me at a friends suggestion. None of us had ever seen it done like this, everyone usually has you prep your zip and that is so much more work.
That was absolutely brilliant and original! I’m going to have sweet dreams about the butler method. I definitely can’t wait to practise your accurate advice . Thank you so much for all this clarity ! RESPECT 😆😆😆😆😆🤩🤩🤩

Best explanation ever! Finally! Glad someone from a facebook group recommended you after I asked a question about using a hemostat!. I just subscribed!
I'm not sure about the end gaps but ima give it a try. VERY HELPFUL tutorial because I need to make these and those zipper ends have been the worst PLUS now I know 🙄not to topstitch the lining🙄......and stitchimg across the lining and tearing out between the backstitches, AWESOME! Absolutely loved your video ! I noticed you mentioned with a #3 zip to use a 1/4" seam. Can I ask if you are inserting a number 5 zip at what width seam do you use?
Hi Amy I’ve been making pouches for a while and love this method- it’s the first time my corners are neat looking. So many videos out there but none of them as straight forward and productive as yours 😁 Can you tell me what template you use to round off the corners please- it looks lovely curved. Many thanks for sharing this method and I look forward to more videos form you
Hi Anu. I have missed a lot of comments and for that I apologize. I use whatever I have laying around. No joke. The lids to nut jars are great, coffee cups from Dunkin are awesome too! When I clean out my fridge or we finish up a container of something with a lid I will wash it and bring it down to my studio! They are free and they work great!
Wow! On top of the wonderful butler method - - -

Ok, this video is amazing, not just the method but your delivery. Your explanation and speed of. Not to mention your video, editing (maybe you don't even edit your so good) and volume/lighting. Here's my question, what kind of Juki are you using ? And is it your perfect favorite ? I long for a real quality industrial lock stitch machine. What type & size thread do you many use and needle size. Thank You in advance, looks like your a responder ! Love It. Bryan
Hey Bryan! Thank you so much, I’m so glad you enjoyed the video!! I use a Juki DDL 8700 straight stitch flat bed machine. I love her. She is perfect for all of the things I sew. From vinyl to chiffon she has not failed me! I mostly use Gutermann Mara 70 Tex 40. There are a lot of colors to choose from and you can pick it up from Wawak which is where I get my needles as well. My needles vary in size depending on what I’m sewing. I mostly use Groz-Beckert needles. If sewing linen or cotton I’ll use the regular point needles and if I’m sewing stretch fabric or fleece with a little stretch I’ll go with the ball point. www.wawak.com/thread/thread-by-use/all-purpose/gutermann-mara-70-poly-wrapped-poly-core-thread-tex-40/ You can follow that link to check out the thread and then from drop down menu check out all the needle choices!

Absolutely loved your video ! I noticed you mentioned with a #3 zip to use a 1/4" seam. Can I ask if you are inserting a number 5 zip at what width seam do you use?
You can take a 3/8" SA if you want to get closer to the teeth, otherwise 1/4" works well.
Hi Amy
I’ve been making pouches for a while and love this method- it’s the first time my corners are neat looking. So many videos out there but none of them as straight forward and productive as yours 😁
