Just think: if the initial travel was called, then this entire situation would have been avoided. And, yes, he did travel: establishes left pivot foot, steps with his right, jumps and lands on his right foot again, then steps with his left foot before contact ever occurs. I'm all for a gather step (NBA and FIBA...the rules I officiate with), but even in NBA and FIBA you aren't allowed to have the same foot or both feet consecutively touch the floor. In this case, he takes off with his right foot and lands on his right foot. Maybe someone can find this exact wording for NFHS since I do not have a full rule or case book. However, even if that wasn't a travelling violation, he still travels when his original pivot foot (left foot) returns to the floor. The only way this isn't a travelling violation is if you consider his right foot as the pivot, and you're allowed to touch the floor consecutively with the same foot ;~)
I agree. There would be less intense situations like this if officials did their jobs. Them making horrible calls on a consistent basis escalates the situation every time.
I've seen it once as an official scorer, and had to alert the referees that there was a bit of cross-chat between the coaches in that regard. Thankfully, nothing came of it, but still.
It's also worth noting that Dan Hurley was talking to the official (or one of his players) and only started talking to Frank Haith AFTER Haith started jawing at him. So what you said is false! Franky started the incident between them and Dan was the first one to make amends.
When will they fire officials for being bad on consistent basis? This whole basketball season has been filled with horrible officials. I’ve seen five games where the officials cost the team the game this season due to bad calls or non calls.
If both were being asses, the technicals & ejections were warranted. If they both then refused to leave, the officials should have terminated the game, leaving it either as a no-contest or a double forfeiture. Do that once or twice, get supported by the conferences & the NCAA, & the situation never comes up again.
Refs need to be held accountable for escalating situations. Technical fouls makes everyone very angry. It makes the fans angry, the coaches angry, and the players angry. Don’t call a tech unless you need to.
@@MonarchEAS I'm late to the party on this but with over 1,000 games as a referee, trust me when I say once you T both coaches in one incident, the very first thing you do is go to them and try to calm the waters. Usually with something like "Guys, that's one each. Let's be smart, you both want to see this through." Most coaches respond with a shrug and a "Yeah", often even "sorry ref" then calm down and carry on. SOME coaches, including these 2 choose to keep talking and escalating the situation. The initial instruction, a polite reminder, a final warning then you have no option but to toss them.

If this rule were fairly enforced Coach Knight would have never coached a full game at Indiana.
