- A group of Newfoundlanders are in Ireland to visit the birthplace of their ancestors.
Confluence 85, a project to bring the descendants of Irish emigrants to Canada back to Ireland, has resulted in field trips like this one where a group from Newfoundland visited counties Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny.
The visitors meet the local people and hear talks from academics Jack Burtchaell and William Smyth about the kind of lives people left in Ireland before departing for Canada.
Many Newfoundlanders to this day speak with accents very similar to those of the south-east of Ireland where their ancestors came from.
An RTÉ News report from 28 June 1985. The reporter is Michael Ryan.
What's crazy to me is that some of these people were likely born at the turn of the 20th century, and would have likely known people that lived through the famine. They lived through so much.
I’ve met some Newfie’s you’d think just got off the boat. They’re a sound bunch.
Remember your roots 🙏💚
Thanks, I'd forgotten to water them.

In 2023 I'm going to Canada to make me fortune in weed.
I'd like to see your berries and trees. Where are you in Canada?
The Irish people have enough organic food. What we need is a strong organic poteen. Can you make that?
I’ve double the family in Canada than I do in Ireland. My 3 times great grandfather left around 1860 . We can trace earlier lines to French Irish deported from Acaidia, right back to Southampton and Liverpool where camps were set up
Great video/channel. My wife's ancestors ended up in Cape Breton Nova Scotia and although most of them of them never made the trip back (to both Ireland and Scotland) their accent apparently still sounds Irish to some. Lots of Irish immigrated to Quebec over the years too. There was definitely a language barrier but they found common ground with my people over Catholicism and general distaste for the English (just kidding, don't crucify me). À votre santè
Have you ever visited Grosse Île in Quebec? Many Irish died there in quarantine during the famine. I’m from Ireland but live in Toronto and have always wanted to go and visit.
It must be great discovering where you come from, where your roots are and also the possibility of meeting some of your relatives, I have often thought, where did my people come from 4/500 years or more ago, am I related to that very great warrior Cú Chulainn, I feel that I am as we have a lot of similarities
They were probably overcome with the fresh air.
Great video ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Judging by their clothes there is a SHAWS (almost nationwide) in Canada.

She may have understood him perfectly well, some people's ears are more finely turned then others
There are more irish in north america than ireland… there are 70-80 million irish total, ireland only has 7.1 million people today
that is crazy, what you say is true
forced from their routes from poverty and hunger, what a lose to Ireland.
The damage that the English did to the Irish over 800 years is similar to what Israel is doing to the people of Gaza and Palestine, God help and protect the bombed, shot, starved and down trodden people of our world wherever they may be. where are the peacemakers, we need to hear their voices heard again
