I've always been a big fan of analog consoles. I grew up mixing in the box in DAWs. Later on, when I was 18, I learned the Api 1608-ii and I absolutely fell in love. It's definitely not for everybody, but I love the analog workflow. I own a Soundcraft signature 22mtk and I do almost all of my mixing on it! As for digital consoles, the Behringer x32 is dope, especially for live sound. I don't know if I would use it for studio mixing though.
Nice video! If that's ok, just wanna add a warning to viewers that are trying to multi-track record, that Behringer small-format USB mixers (smaller than the X32) like the Q802USB are NOT designed for multi-track recording. Their USB interfaces record in stereo only, and hard-wired to do so off the Main LR channel.
same goes for the X32 unless you buy the expansion card or as I do plug it into a surface pro which runs the DAW software and records the multi tracks.
One thing to remember about digital mixers is they need smooth power. Glitchy power will lock the board up, requiring a full power down boot up to clear. With analog, it might get a little quieter or pop, but will continue to operate. Yes, I've been in the middle of a Korn concert where the power glitched a few times taking the board down! Next best thing to a full riot! Also, the brain boxes on digital boards need to be different processors to properly A-B the system. What will lock up one brain, will also cause lockup on the other. On larger boards, having everything at the identical software update is important. Had a PM1D get upset after a surprise power outage, and refused to update an I/O module, causing a house hold for an hour on Mamma Mia! The digital signal processors used in the channels on boards are dangerous as well. A glitch there can do incredibly nasty things requiring power down resets. And it won't be just one channel going down, try 8, 12, or 16! We had a offboard DSP go down on Phantom, and it's failure forgot all crossover settings, and blasted every output at +24db with white noise. Result, all Tannoy coaxial drivers on the right side of the rig smoking! That's a serious DSP failure! So, having that off board gear can sometimes be better than relying on inboard DSP's. I've seen analog failures, but rarely do they kill a show. On the bigger boards, I've swapped channel strips during shows, and percussive maintenance to fix problems (lift and drop). Short of a power supply failure, they usually keep going. Sad to see them go! (but my back is happy!) The best board to transition from analog is the Midas/Behringer X32. They're a little quirky in the local/offboard input settings, as things in the menus are easily hidden. But otherwise, I like that board. One of the worst is the Yamaha O1V96! Powered mixers are awesome for the small "hit and run raids." Look for board style mixers, and make sure they have channel mutes! Also, match your speaker cabinets to the amps. Try to get as many inputs as possible (16-24 is good). I ran a low end rental company, and these were money makers.
@@Xtn1Insecticide When power is coming from a genny there's not much you can do other than a UPS, but they can lock things when they switch too! Had a fire in one show that came back to the US from Japan. Both supplies went up in smoke. Luckily, we had a Midas 3K locally that we could borrow from, and they were able to get new supplies by the end of the week.

I used to be a gene op in film, running all the power and yeah dude the fluctuations from back emf especially when sfx would run fans was real fun, NOT lol
Oh and multiple genes running various parts of the same set with light flicker phase issues if ya set thing wrong, not to mention balancing an ever changing load with multiple departments and giant lights being moved around to different places needing power fast, and then worse case running multiple sets and unit at the same time, it was a very busy job aha aha
You should make a video on recording equipment placement, like if mixer and audio interface should be in a seperate room from band or instruments, instrument placement, mic placement, cable management, etc.

GREAT VIDEO! Everyone who needs to buy a console should watch it! Behringer generally has weak pre-amps but X32 takes about 5 minutes to learn. Midas M32 solves the Behringer pre-amp issue and is functionally the same but has better guts. Soundcraft SI's have a crap control set, physically and on the app; drive Soundcraft pre's mid-hard and they're a lot happier. I've never seen Yamaha build anything bad, but their apps don't work with Android :( I do like the PreSonus StudioLive but some lack the motor faders and the fat channel setup takes a bit of getting used to; love their app though. The A&H SQ's are pretty nice but some of the setup parameters seem to be named a little weird and are very nested; top control layout takes a bit of getting used to. I dislike Mackie for live sound. I have a Yamaha MG12XU and a Behringer X1832USB, Yamaha sounds better and is more intuitive. The Behringer has a really fun effects processor; great for UA-cam Karaoke with kids/teens. Behringer also came with the rack ears. The USB I/O on either has it's uses. I mixed on a Soundcraft Europa for a couple of months once, that is a BIG board. Made the Yamaha M2000 I learned on look small. The good old days of analog...
I have the Yamaha MG12XU as well. Using some HS8s. Ive got the Yamaha mixer connected to the HS8s using the TRS jacks And just jamming with some synths and a TR8s. Ive got the HS8s plugged into the monitor jacks on the mixer. And i cant turn anything up without clipping. Theres barely any sound coming out of the speakers man. You got any suggestions? am i supposed to plug hs8s into the other outs? ya know, the two right below the XLR outs? BTW, the XLRs on the back the HS8s are going to my UAD Apollo solo right now. maybe i should try plugging those into the mixer. idk.

Good morning, May I ask which mixer you would recommend for the purpose of live-streaming? Goal is to have 1 Mic plugged in, and the rest (Music, Game, discord/teamspeak, system) coming in via usb but split to different lanes. I'm currently using the Yamaha MG12XU but having to manage all these cables is a hassle.
What would you say a good device would be for occasionally recording live with different types of fx sends/inserts for independent signals without a computer, yet also for mastering with a DAW in the studio? I’m really new to the mixing scene and I’m dead *ss nervous about wasting my time and money, but I really want to explore the granularity of fine tuning independent tracks. imagine if you could design sound for 3 different bands all playing wildly different genres of music, write a synced lightshow, save all projects, and recall it again for a whole tour and only having to auto spectrum analyze/equalize the room at each gig.... hmmm i wonder.

Anything weird about running an analog 2000mA, 12-15v mixer off a 12v battery? I use the same battery to power a 160mA 12v lapel mic and dual 300mA 12v wireless handheld. Then I run the signal via one wireless mono XLR connector into my battery powered speaker. Easy for wedding ceremonies. So far I don't notice anything weird, wondering if there are any special considerations with this setup.
Will a simple analog mixer help me connect a phone/computer (for music) and a guitar, or keyboard then be able listen to them on my headphones to play along songs. My main concern is managing the volumes independently and not losing sound quality. I just want to be able to practice my guitar along songs quietly at night using my headphones. Aux splitters seem not to work properly.

While you don’t technically need a mixer to record, there are routing benefits to using one. What you’ll definitely need is an audio interface. To record a band, I’d recommend at least 8-16 channels. It’s possible to use fewer or more channels than that - just depends on what you’re recording.

Thanks for your video. A very simple question to ask. I use mixers because my audio interface Steinberg URC22 MkII has only 2 output. So far i've chosen the cheapest option: two Moukey minimixers, one 8 input and one 6input (8 input is currently unavailable) I am rather satisfied with that setting but do you think that getting, instead of those two small Mookey, a Behringer RX1602 V2 Rackmount Line Mixer 16 inputs would allow a significant improvement?

There are lots of tools for modulating the voice - pitch correction, flanger, chorus, pitch shifting, etc. The gadget depends on the effect you’re seeking.
Hey bud, great vids, your mixing wisdom is great, just one thing ... Sample Rate is everything when mixing, the examples you have shared in other posts are all 48kHz, which is mud to my ears. With a proper 192kHz sample rate your effects can run at 2% and give you what you want, everything sounds better especially the bass and sub tracks, with 192kHz you can literally hear the strings. And the final mix will blow you away, regardless of the output sample limits. Just Saying, maybe a sample rate vid B-)
When I looked to replace my Yamaha 01x I did a lot of research into what to buy next, sample and bit rates were one of the critical factors. I have a LIquid 56 rack that can run at 192 so had experience of ultimate but found running effects internally at 96kHz was perfectly ok for plugin over sampling whilst 48kHZ is perfect for most mixdown/outputs. I managed to get my hands on a X32 with SD snake boxes for a seriously good price and bought it. Obviously the X32 is a budget bit of gear and not studio quality but as a live mixer recording the multi tracks its perfectly adequate it runs at 96 internally and 48kHz externally. None of the lower end mixers get close to 192 so its a complete none starter not even in the equation and if you want such quality you would be best looking for a audio interface not a mixer.
@@uselessoldman7964 Price is always a problem, but "A" grade gear is worth it, do the homework, buy them second hand, your punters will rave about your gig forever if you have quality gear. It goes for everything, from amps to EQ's to effects. anything less than 96kHz is mud, 48kHz is loud mud. I recommend ONKYO for any home theater/stereo stuff, freaking good 192kHz or better amps for the best price. Record companies release 45 rpm 12 inch singles for a reason ;-) From memory they are 78kHz compared to the 58kHz of a 33 rpm long play record.

As for my audio music gear I have a Liquid 56 into QSC RMX amps although I do own the X32 compact for live gigs. As an old DJ I have original 12"s from the late 1970s ands 80s, a lot of them, they were better cos the groves were wider apart and the vinyl was thicker so they lasted longer both in durability and came with extended versions many of them promo copies. I also have a wall full of original vinyl albums, all genre, but I guess 75% of them are punk, alternative and rock. But then I also have a library of digital, most converted myself, about 5Tb in total. mostly FLAC and SADC. Problem with Vinyl's they weighed a ton and took up a lot of room.
48KHz is the standard sample rate for video sound tracks. 44.1KHz is the standard sample rate for CD audio tracks. The only time you will hear any difference between those sample rates and higher is if you encode ultrasonic frequencies much higher than the 20KHz audible bandwidth, or if you convert tracks between 44.1KHz and 48KHz sample rates with a low-quality converter. Higher sample rates are the digital equivalent of gold-plated analog connectors, which are always great for impressing clients.
IF I am understanding the question: - You will want a mic/ DI/ Line-level source for every channel you want to mix. Make sure your mixer has a few more channels for returns. - For these inputs, you want some outboard gear you can insert (if your inputs allow it, which at least some should!); to do a full band: 4-6 channels of gates, 10+ channels of compressors (combo units that do both to the signal are available), maybe some better EQs, even FX and external preamps. The sky's the limit here! - Make sure any channels you want to record have direct outs. - For outputs, you want some outboard parametric EQs and high-quality compressors (gates are not usually necessary on outputs) patched in-line. Inserts on your outputs allows for the addition of graphic EQs if you are doing Live Sound, or for parallel processing of busses. - Finally, you want some FX. MultiFX processors are really useful, but dedicated reverbs, flangers, and delays can have really great character. You want the capability of simultaneously creating 2 reverbs and 1 delay at a minimum. - P.S. INVEST IN SOME GOOD QUALITY RACKS FOR IT TO ALL GO IN, AND CABLES TO PATCH IT ALL TOGETHER.
Basic question for a digital mixer with passive speakers about 50 feet away. Would the power amp stay by the mixer (in this case a tech room 50ft from the stage), or would the power amp be on stage by the speakers? I appreciate any help I can get. Thank you!
At a distance of only 50’, it would probably be ok either way. However, the optimal setup would have the amp rack by the speakers with a balanced line level connection between the mixer and the amplifier. Great question! Either way is ine, but also consider where the speakers are located and how many monitors. And accessibility to power. It sounds like this is a permanent install so running long speaker lines maybe as easy as running long balanced cables
If you use a digital mixer, I would advise running a digital line to your amp, like a Dante, there are a lot of Amps out there that support Dante Inputs, and usually the Amp is by the stage

Depends on your FOH. If you are using passive speakers you will want a powered mixer. If you are using powered speakers (most likely scenario) a passive mixer will be what you want. If you are building your own system I recommend a passive mixer and active speakers. The powered speakers are much lighter and passive mixers have more functionality.
I’ve not used it, but from the manual (available online) it is a standard analog mixer with a lot of channels, effects, and with a basic usb interface added. It allows two channel record and playback, fine for routing music from a computer or sending audio for livestream. I have no idea about quality, reliability, or tech support.

I don’t believe the Signature 22 can act as a control surface for controlling a DAW. You can record 2-channels with the Signature 22 or 22-channels with the Signature 22 MTK over USB.
Hello everyone! I'm new to the channel and the subject and just had a couple of easy question anyone please feel free to answer! I've been practicing the Law of Attraction for awhile now and would like to make positive affirmation subliminal music? Meaning I'd like to record my voice underneath music (very very very low) saying things like I AM HEALTHY, I AM LOVE, I AM POSITIVE AND ETC then place the music or calming sound music over those positive affirmations. If these audio mixer are able to do this, can you please recommend the bare minimum that I would need. My intentions is to go with a 4 channel audio mixer, then what else is needed? Condenser or Dynamic mics? The mixer would strictly be used for making subliminals and not DJing! I'd would like to thank you in advance, thanks! BB
For the type of function, I'd recommend just a computer DAW and audio interface. You would record or import the music and voice separately and you could copy the same voice bits repeatedly.
Yeah for that you would ether need a Audio mixer with Digital USB Interface for all channels. If its not live use an audio Interface, like a Scarlet 18i20 with a Condenser Mic if you have a very quiet room or a Dynamic mic If you dont

It’s cool that there are options, I hate that controlling computer faders seam so difficult for me with a controller, and distract from the creativity trying to figure crap out. I just wanna know what sounds best? Analog signal chain to interface, or digital chain to usb, and by best I don’t mean which has the lowest noise gate or least analog chain delays, phase issues or latency with digital, what I’m asking about is what brings the most audio enjoyment at the listening end. I hate the sound of the midi stuff vs the old keyboards, is it just me or did older samplers sound a lot better too, it’s like everything was equalised to reduce everything into a pipeline when going digital which has lost some magic. I would like to know what desks to buy for their sound as much as functionality and figure out a work flow from that angle if anyone can help explain why most of the new mixes sound like crap including remastering of old recordings lol

Keep in mind ...on these digital desks....Processing is limited ...when you really start taxing the system ...which are basically linux machines....they stutter....large shows have to send out massive outbound drive racks because the consoles are not that great and cant stay stable....analog def sounds better .... Remember .....no matter what.... it's still analog in and analog out....into mic...analog....out of the speaker analog...analog is more labor intensive ....true...digi....even at 192kres....is no better....its still..."all analog...in and out"...

In that case, you’ll either need a multitrack audio interface or a mixer that offers multitrack recording. The main benefit of a mixer (for drummers especially) is that you’ll be able to more easily create headphone mixes. There are endless other benefits of having the ability to route audio to various outputs using a mixer. However, if you are really just using it to record to your computer, you can certainly get the job done with an audio interface.

Behringer generally has weak pre-amps but X32 takes about 5 minutes to learn. Midas M32 solves the Behringer pre-amp issue and is functionally the same but has better guts. Soundcraft SI's have a crap control set, physically and on the app; drive Soundcraft pre's mid-hard and they're a lot happier. I've never seen Yamaha build anything bad, but their apps don't work with Android :( I do like the PreSonus StudioLive but some lack the motor faders and the fat channel setup takes a bit of getting used to; love their app though. The A&H SQ's are pretty nice but some of the setup parameters seem to be named a little weird and are very nested; top control layout takes a bit of getting used to. I dislike Mackie for live sound.
I have a Yamaha MG12XU and a Behringer X1832USB, Yamaha sounds better and is more intuitive. The Behringer has a really fun effects processor; great for UA-cam Karaoke with kids/teens. Behringer also came with the rack ears. The USB I/O on either has it's uses.
I mixed on a Soundcraft Europa for a couple of months once, that is a BIG board. Made the Yamaha M2000 I learned on look small. The good old days of analog...
I have the Yamaha MG12XU as well. Using some HS8s. Ive got the Yamaha mixer connected to the HS8s using the TRS jacks And just jamming with some synths and a TR8s. Ive got the HS8s plugged into the monitor jacks on the mixer. And i cant turn anything up without clipping. Theres barely any sound coming out of the speakers man. You got any suggestions? am i supposed to plug hs8s into the other outs? ya know, the two right below the XLR outs? BTW, the XLRs on the back the HS8s are going to my UAD Apollo solo right now. maybe i should try plugging those into the mixer. idk.

Both options are good. There may be subtle differences based on quality, but that’s the case with anything.

Anything weird about running an analog 2000mA, 12-15v mixer off a 12v battery?
I use the same battery to power a 160mA 12v lapel mic and dual 300mA 12v wireless handheld. Then I run the signal via one wireless mono XLR connector into my battery powered speaker. Easy for wedding ceremonies.
So far I don't notice anything weird, wondering if there are any special considerations with this setup.
Will a simple analog mixer help me connect a phone/computer (for music) and a guitar, or keyboard then be able listen to them on my headphones to play along songs. My main concern is managing the volumes independently and not losing sound quality. I just want to be able to practice my guitar along songs quietly at night using my headphones. Aux splitters seem not to work properly.

While you don’t technically need a mixer to record, there are routing benefits to using one. What you’ll definitely need is an audio interface. To record a band, I’d recommend at least 8-16 channels. It’s possible to use fewer or more channels than that - just depends on what you’re recording.

So far i've chosen the cheapest option: two Moukey minimixers, one 8 input and one 6input (8 input is currently unavailable)

There are lots of tools for modulating the voice - pitch correction, flanger, chorus, pitch shifting, etc. The gadget depends on the effect you’re seeking.

Hey bud, great vids, your mixing wisdom is great, just one thing ...
Sample Rate is everything when mixing, the examples you have shared in other posts are all 48kHz, which is mud to my ears. With a proper 192kHz sample rate your effects can run at 2% and give you what you want, everything sounds better especially the bass and sub tracks, with 192kHz you can literally hear the strings.
And the final mix will blow you away, regardless of the output sample limits.

When I looked to replace my Yamaha 01x I did a lot of research into what to buy next, sample and bit rates were one of the critical factors. I have a LIquid 56 rack that can run at 192 so had experience of ultimate but found running effects internally at 96kHz was perfectly ok for plugin over sampling whilst 48kHZ is perfect for most mixdown/outputs. I managed to get my hands on a X32 with SD snake boxes for a seriously good price and bought it. Obviously the X32 is a budget bit of gear and not studio quality but as a live mixer recording the multi tracks its perfectly adequate it runs at 96 internally and 48kHz externally. None of the lower end mixers get close to 192 so its a complete none starter not even in the equation and if you want such quality you would be best looking for a audio interface not a mixer.
@@uselessoldman7964 Price is always a problem, but "A" grade gear is worth it, do the homework, buy them second hand, your punters will rave about your gig forever if you have quality gear.
It goes for everything, from amps to EQ's to effects.
anything less than 96kHz is mud, 48kHz is loud mud.
I recommend ONKYO for any home theater/stereo stuff, freaking good 192kHz or better amps for the best price.
Record companies release 45 rpm 12 inch singles for a reason ;-)
From memory they are 78kHz compared to the 58kHz of a 33 rpm long play record.

As for my audio music gear I have a Liquid 56 into QSC RMX amps although I do own the X32 compact for live gigs. As an old DJ I have original 12"s from the late 1970s ands 80s, a lot of them, they were better cos the groves were wider apart and the vinyl was thicker so they lasted longer both in durability and came with extended versions many of them promo copies. I also have a wall full of original vinyl albums, all genre, but I guess 75% of them are punk, alternative and rock. But then I also have a library of digital, most converted myself, about 5Tb in total. mostly FLAC and SADC. Problem with Vinyl's they weighed a ton and took up a lot of room.

48KHz is the standard sample rate for video sound tracks. 44.1KHz is the standard sample rate for CD audio tracks. The only time you will hear any difference between those sample rates and higher is if you encode ultrasonic frequencies much higher than the 20KHz audible bandwidth, or if you convert tracks between 44.1KHz and 48KHz sample rates with a low-quality converter. Higher sample rates are the digital equivalent of gold-plated analog connectors, which are always great for impressing clients.

Hi, vilskymortv. I don't understand the question.
IF I am understanding the question:
- You will want a mic/ DI/ Line-level source for every channel you want to mix. Make sure your mixer has a few more channels for returns.
- For these inputs, you want some outboard gear you can insert (if your inputs allow it, which at least some should!); to do a full band: 4-6 channels of gates, 10+ channels of compressors (combo units that do both to the signal are available), maybe some better EQs, even FX and external preamps. The sky's the limit here!
- Make sure any channels you want to record have direct outs.
- For outputs, you want some outboard parametric EQs and high-quality compressors (gates are not usually necessary on outputs) patched in-line. Inserts on your outputs allows for the addition of graphic EQs if you are doing Live Sound, or for parallel processing of busses.
- Finally, you want some FX. MultiFX processors are really useful, but dedicated reverbs, flangers, and delays can have really great character. You want the capability of simultaneously creating 2 reverbs and 1 delay at a minimum.
- P.S. INVEST IN SOME GOOD QUALITY RACKS FOR IT TO ALL GO IN, AND CABLES TO PATCH IT ALL TOGETHER.
Basic question for a digital mixer with passive speakers about 50 feet away. Would the power amp stay by the mixer (in this case a tech room 50ft from the stage), or would the power amp be on stage by the speakers? I appreciate any help I can get. Thank you!
At a distance of only 50’, it would probably be ok either way. However, the optimal setup would have the amp rack by the speakers with a balanced line level connection between the mixer and the amplifier.

Either way is ine, but also consider where the speakers are located and how many monitors. And accessibility to power. It sounds like this is a permanent install so running long speaker lines maybe as easy as running long balanced cables
If you use a digital mixer, I would advise running a digital line to your amp, like a Dante, there are a lot of Amps out there that support Dante Inputs, and usually the Amp is by the stage

Depends on your FOH. If you are using passive speakers you will want a powered mixer. If you are using powered speakers (most likely scenario) a passive mixer will be what you want. If you are building your own system I recommend a passive mixer and active speakers. The powered speakers are much lighter and passive mixers have more functionality.

I’ve not used it, but from the manual (available online) it is a standard analog mixer with a lot of channels, effects, and with a basic usb interface added. It allows two channel record and playback, fine for routing music from a computer or sending audio for livestream. I have no idea about quality, reliability, or tech support.

Meaning I'd like to record my voice underneath music (very very very low) saying things like I AM HEALTHY, I AM LOVE, I AM POSITIVE AND ETC then place the music or calming sound music over those positive affirmations. If these audio mixer are able to do this, can you please recommend the bare minimum that I would need. My intentions is to go with a 4 channel audio mixer, then what else is needed? For the type of function, I'd recommend just a computer DAW and audio interface. You would record or import the music and voice separately and you could copy the same voice bits repeatedly.
Yeah for that you would ether need a Audio mixer with Digital USB Interface for all channels. If its not live use an audio Interface, like a Scarlet 18i20 with a Condenser Mic if you have a very quiet room or a Dynamic mic If you dont

It’s cool that there are options, I hate that controlling computer faders seam so difficult for me with a controller, and distract from the creativity trying to figure crap out.
I just wanna know what sounds best? Analog signal chain to interface, or digital chain to usb, and by best I don’t mean which has the lowest noise gate or least analog chain delays, phase issues or latency with digital, what I’m asking about is what brings the most audio enjoyment at the listening end. I hate the sound of the midi stuff vs the old keyboards, is it just me or did older samplers sound a lot better too, it’s like everything was equalised to reduce everything into a pipeline when going digital which has lost some magic. I would like to know what desks to buy for their sound as much as functionality and figure out a work flow from that angle if anyone can help explain why most of the new mixes sound like crap including remastering of old recordings lol

Keep in mind ...on these digital desks....Processing is limited ...when you really start taxing the system ...which are basically linux machines....they stutter....large shows have to send out massive outbound drive racks because the consoles are not that great and cant stay stable....analog def sounds better .... Remember .....no matter what.... it's still analog in and analog out....into mic...analog....out of the speaker analog...analog is more labor intensive ....true...digi....even at 192kres....is no better....its still..."all analog...in and out"...

In that case, you’ll either need a multitrack audio interface or a mixer that offers multitrack recording.
The main benefit of a mixer (for drummers especially) is that you’ll be able to more easily create headphone mixes.
There are endless other benefits of having the ability to route audio to various outputs using a mixer.
However, if you are really just using it to record to your computer, you can certainly get the job done with an audio interface.
