I remember the first time my Mother and I sat down at a Woolworth's lunch counter to eat (after segregation), the white male customer got up and left. He asked the waitress, "if he had to sit next to us and eat?" She told him, "No, you can take your plate and go outside and eat." And he did. My mother and I were suitably dressed. The man wore a pair of dirty overalls. That was one of many encounters.
