I held off going to PC from consoles, but these handheld PCs caught my attention as im someone that probably enjoyed the PSP more than any other console. Now with an egpu + Rog Ally, I don’t need a console or pay a subscription fee, I don’t need to buy a laptop/desktop for work and I can take my set up anywhere. It really is the future.
Also i want to say i only discovered your channel a few days ago and have to say all your ally talks are interesting and well done. You guys make a good team with your chemistry.
I’ve bought an $700ish SGWZONE Gaming NVIDIA GeForce RTX4060 & AI BOX eGPU modular too has oculink output included. Zero effort, no clutter. All enclosed in one piece and it’s been “plug and play” 100% so far with just powering on this first. 8GB of GDDR6 Graphics Memory. 3072 CUDA CORE. 120W | DLSS 3 NVIDIA Studio. I’m a console guy who just got an Ally X. I can connect this with a console, pc handheld, laptop or desktop that I already have to monitors or nice tvs I already have.
I got my Ally X for my birthday this year, I use it as a 2nd PC my main rig is a 5800X3D RX 6800...gotta love emulation the Ally X is an awesome emulator especially for Switch Roms.
Yeah for sure, I mean that is just a compact PSU/controller, so if you did the messy build of mine I paid £85 for the PSU, £100 for the eGPU controller, so I paid around the same but regardless, I wanted a modular setup I could upgrade/sell in future and not an open air build like the Aoostar.
@@128KB Yeah, i wish there was more compact closed options available. But if you actually did want to sell the aoostar you would be able to sell it just fine just like any laptop or handheld that also arent upgradable. And you can always upgrade it with any gpu in the future that will use less then the 500w power supply. If the power supply breaks in the future you are out $200, but a normal psu costs $100, so talking $100 difference in lost money if something goes wrong. If you want compact and easy to use this is it. If the size of the egpu isnt an issue, your way is a cleaner set up since its enclosed. Also the aoostar has both occulink and tb4. So if you have a GPD device you will get much better performance with the occulink.
I use the ally x with a razer core with a 4070 inside. I have pre-ordered ag02 and hoping to get more performance out of my 4070 than with my razer core. Can someone please tell me if that's the case? Otherwise Ive wasted my money lol
I’m in the situation that I bought the rog x and the onexgpu I’m happy so far and selling my high end desktop. The fact that I can take my PC with me when I go away appeals to me. Performance is not up to my desktop but I knew this before I started. So far so good. I mainly play farming sim and planet coaster and have not run into any issues. I’ve got it set up on 2 144hz 18 inch monitors and am rally happy. For those of us without the capability of building our own egpu how about some advice on per built units.
I can imagine it would be a little bit of a pain having to change graphics settings for every game you want to play every time you plug/unplug the egpu. I wish devs would let us create and save our own pre-sets for graphics. I already fing it annoying that i have to change graphics settings when playing on different devices but thats only for the games that have the graphics settings saved with the cloud game save rather than seperate on the device.
@@bodajunglist yep, you're absolutely right. I don't mind since it's the only way currently but is the biggest annoyance for sure. Wish you could save preset graphics options as you said!
@128KB I'm really tempted to do it though tbh. I could sell my laptop to fund it and have a fair bit of cash left over. Do you know how much power draw it uses? Do you have a way of setting power limits on the GPU?
I’m going this route. Good bye 4080 7800x 32 ram 5tb. Welcome hybrid (switchy real dream) (same money but way more convenient and space efficient) I had to sell my pc and steam deck OLED. But I’m excited.
I have 5 months left on my GeForce Now Ultimate subscription and in my personal opinion it’s not worth it unless I have access to my entire steam library. I maybe used it once 😂
@ I had gamepass and I’ve come to learn that I prefer owning my games rather than renting them. I guess it’s because I play at my own pace and don’t want to find myself in the mood to play a certain game and not have access to my previous saves all because I may have gotten rid of game pass
For me, I’ll say maybe to build external graphic card to be turned in as a EGPU . It’s just depends everyone has different personal preference for me. I wanna build something more affordable not something more expensive. The most affordable you can only get will be around $400 or two $500 between that’s the minimum budget range only range I wanna save will be $400 between
This is why I chose not to go down the route of expensive egpu. I was able to find a thunderbolt (owc helios fx550) with a 1070ti in it for less than 200USD. Works great on 1080p which is perfect for my use case. I can possibly sell the 1070ti for around 150USD and get rtx 4060 and that would still be cheap and very power efficient.
@@sergeyyakovlev6627 oh yes absolutely, eGPU's have been around for years mainly to connect to underpowered laptops to turn them into gaming machines. They just require a compatible thunderbolt or usb4 port!
@@xXComix_GamingXx My old 3080 Ti that was in my PC used to get really hot around 75-80c. But that was in a desktop. Maybe try poking around some Reddit threads to see what others experienced. You can also check threads from the Lenovo Legion Go since it’s so similar.
Thanks for the video, I just got my ally x for $416 open box due to my current gaming rig not supporting windows 11 and the ssd is hanging out the case lmao. After hearing about this I think that it’d be a great to idea to repurpose my 6900xt and newer psu I had to upgrade with it. Is there any thunderbolt 5 options out now, if not when do you think they’ll drop?
does it have touch screen. can i draw picture with some sort of pen like a tablet? I like this because it has windows. android is annoying. A psp size one just as powerfull would be nice.
Isn't TB5 was an intel thing? I think AMD cpus can support it, but it isn't guaranteed. Also, 120Gbps was limited to intel, so AMD would at best be 80 Gbps (still double TB4 though in fairness). I could be way off base though.
I used th3p4g3 egpu with 4080 super for my ally x. It might be overkill but playing black myth wukong at 4k high settings 100+ fps on at 75in 4k 120hz oled TV is a great experience, then if go on travel or at work i can just play handheld. I sold my xbox series x and will never look back 😂

I'm about to do this but not build my own egpu. Gonna buy the ally x today since its on sale. Then buy the graphics card and asoostar dock next year.

Same. Can't bring myself back to my series x. Steam is a much better store.

Honestly the aoostar ag02 is a great deal for this sort of thing. Compact, built in 500w power supply for $220 then what ever you pay for your gpu.
