- This video tells the story of the arrival of KAU'ULUFONUA to Futuna during this conquest of the Pacific, Futuna is the only Pacific island that to have fought the arming TONGANS among all the Pacific Islands, there are two defeat of Tongans to Futuna, the first is in alofi the sister island of futuna and the second in sigave Kingdom, Futuna has two Kingdom ALO and SIGAVE, alofi island is part of ALO Kingdom. The arrival of kau'ulufonua to Futuna with his arm, the population of kolonui village lived in the mountain because it is easier to see off the coast the arrival of the wars boats, kau'ulufonua and are arming see off the beach a woman who is "Finelasi" protective goddess of futuna, they asked the woman or are residents of this island, kau'ulufonua and his arm follow up finelasi they go up into the mountain by a rope called a futuna "va tipi" finelasi has save kau'ulufonua and two man of his arm and she cut the rope and all her arm of kau'ulufonua are falling and everybody are all dead, there are in this place the marks of blood of the Tongans, the rest of the story is too long with video you can know what pass after that, At the time or kau'ulufonua leave futuna he asked to kaifaka'ulu chief village of kolonui to take what there in the boat but leave them just the boat so they can return home and they also ask to give the name NUKU ALOFA at the village of KOLONUI to thank them for their hospitality and kindness to him to have save the dead.
kaifaka'ulu to give a dance that we called in Futuna Mako Tapaki and Tonga Me'etupaki, there are different Mako Tapaki to futuna and until now there are that of nuku alofa village who can dance this Tapaki that kaifaka'ulu has give kau'ulufonua, he tells all the history of the arrival of the Tongans to futuna.

Im Tongan and I don't need subtitles to translate I already know what the Fortuna brother is saying.. the story is already known to us Tongans... one of our kings from the tuitonga lineage was assassinated in Tonga by two warriors from uvea... the brother of the king vowed revenge and tracked the perpetrators in Fortuna.. where he made the fugitives chew the kava roots blood n all ready for a mix... after drinking to his enemies he had them slaughtered and ate them in front of all to send a message that this is the consequences for anyone who had ideas about assassinations... its a well known story in Tonga...

Kau’ulufonua was a son of the king that was Murdered not a brother, he and his younger brother Mo’ungamotu gathered up all their men and traced the murderers in Futuna then Kau’ulufonu’a broke off their teeth forced them to chew kava roots while spilling out the blood of their fathers murderers and then ate them to show everyone on the island this is retaliation after they hung up Tu’i Tonga Takalaua’s limbs on a tree in uvea.

Ratu Tui The Realest I know in old times most southern Islands in Kiribati had ties with Fiji. They adopted the custom of Chiefs having multiple wives however it soon dissipated once Catholicism arrived and also on one occasion recieved a “Na Drua” which is locally called “Ba Rua” a Fijian loan word for Fijian double hulled canoes distinguishing them from the Kiribatese “Uaa Uua” double hulled canoes they made from wood from their Micronesian neighbours.

I guess all I can say is that only the ones who lived back then truly know what went on. The Pacific Islands 80% of the time always traded and intermingled with one another and only 20% of the time ever waged war on another. We lived in remote islands where we could live off the land and live our life with our family and loved ones close by, war was a very foreign concept. We may have been built for war because of our body frames but we were and still are the most friendliest people on Earth. Better to know why our people got along and intermixed with eachother instead of knowing why we killed eachother.
i am Tongan and i would love to come visit Wallis and Futuna island. I listen to uvea people speak their language and i can understand, also their kava ceremony similar to the Tongan.
I wish there was subtitles to translate this. Very interested in knowing how Tongans got there especially knowing that the tombs in a village in Tonga called Lapaha are scientifically tested and proved to be made out of coral and those coral are only to be found in Futuna and no where else. That’s very fascinating. Scientists are questioning how it got to Tonga because those corals weigh tonnes and knowing how the boats were back in the day they highly doubt that it would’ve been able to carry that much weight. " ( 5 ) She answered : ( 6 ) " I come from our place ! where do you live ? - ( 8 ) We live up there , on the mountain. ( 9 ) And what are you doing here ? ( 10 ) I came to get sea water , ( 11 ) and if you want Accompany me, I will take you to our house.” (12) The occupants of the canoe therefore followed the girl; there was with them Kau'ulufonuafekai, the son of a great Tongan chief. (13) When they reached the bridge of vines, the girl invited Kau'ulufonuafekai to follow her. ( 14 ) So she walked ahead , and Kau'ulufonuafekai Lianas connected the rocky outcrop of Lelepa to another rocky outcrop ar kolotavake above the steep-sided Lotuma river, also named V system allowed to protect the access of the fort where the people lived; the fort clothes were perhaps already related to those of the fort of Nuku.
(15) When the two had reached the other side of the precipice, the girl cut the vines and all the Tongans who followed were thrown into the river where they perished. (16) Only Kau'ulufonuafekai remained alive. obl . Tonga (17) He lived with the young woman for some time. ( 18 ) then she decided to send him away and said goodbye to him in these terms : ( 19 ) " Go tell your father and the people of your country that I no longer want to see the Tongans here . ( 20 ) If you try to return one day or another, know that Futuna will be your cemetery". (21) Kau'ulufonuafekai returned to Tonga and reported these words to his father.

For all my Brothers who don’t understand .. The story is about Tongan army who come to conquer Futuna. After conquer many pacific islands The Tongan decide to conquer Futuna .So lead by Kaiulufenuafekai (the son of the king of Tonga) they landed in the village of Leava and then start searching people. After a moment they found a old futunian women and then ask for a futunian village. The old women say to them the futunian are in the mountain and she will show them the way. Kaiulufenuafekai ordered his army to follow the women . The army start follow the old women , but Kaiulufenuafekai stay with two Warriors to protect their boats . The army arrives to a waterfall , the women said that they need to climb the cliff with a liana . So the old women climb first and all the army follow (all the army in only one liana with the women) . When the women is on the top of the cliff she cut the liana .The tongan army fall down and died . When Kaiulufenuafekai see the river is red blood he knew that his army failed. The Kaifakaulu (Nuku’s chief) send futunian Warriors to capture Kaiulufenuafekai and his Warriors. When Kaiulufenuafekai get captured the chief ordered to Chew the kava to prepare his kava . After this Kaiulufenuafekai asked him to get them free , So Kaifakaulu decide to realese them and give them grounds and call the grounds Niuvalu because is the name of the Kaiulufenuafekai home . That’s why when Kaiulufenuafekai come to tonga he decide to call a village Nuku alofa. Alofa means love or take care . That’s all i’m sorry for my english here in Futuna we speak french . Nuku 'Alofa was named and founded by the 1st Tu'i Kanokupolu Ngata and his Tongan kainga as they sailed past what is now Kolomotu'a back to Hihifo from Mu'a so your story is flawed. The only king to ever be challenged and ousted in combat was Talakaifaiki.

That's what I to say when the tokos talk about how they were the firstto settle all the islands I say to them you were like the white people who came to our islands centuries after it was already settled and tried to lay claim of their wannabe dominance but if you understand they may have won many battles but in the end they lost the war, yeah their influenced may have stuck around due to intermarriages but that's about it.

Yep, he was a feared king...before he got to Futuna on this story Kau'ulufonua just been visiting all islands in the Empire killing lots of people (n probably cooked n consumed lots of them hhh). The empire was in chaos during this time, not much 'inasi were coming back to Lapaha, so upon his return from Futuna he created the 2nd line, Tu'i Ha'atakalaua, as a memory of his dad but also to make sure people bring their 'inasi . He made his younger brother Moungamotua as the first Tui Haatakalaua, creating the Kauhalalalo n Kauhalauta as we know of today.

@A J Not really, before the "invasion" of tongans in 'Uvea, 'Uvea and Futuna were already populated by people probably from neighboring islands (Tokelau, Niue, Fiji etc..). We had very good relations (marriages and commercial exchanges) with Samoa who were very pacific and kind with us, i red an article which said that the original people of the island of Savai'i were from 'Uvea. But of course, after the tongans arrived to 'Uvea (with a good opportunity for them : 'Uvea was not united at that time, and was divided because of internal conflits beetwen the nort and the south of 'Uvea but anyway), 'Uvean traditions and dialect were deeply affected by Tongans which is why our original language has been changed, but before that we spoke almost the same language as Futunians and Samoans. But hey, here we are, and there we go

I’m Tongan, my great great grandpa is a son of Tu’i Uvea. His nick name was puku, my grandma never talked about him, but Puku was a close friend of King Tupou IV. Wish I know more
as Tongan we should not repudiate this legend though it is different from our side of the story...to us, these two individuals were not his bodyguards but Tamasia & Malofafa, the muderer of Tui Haatakalaua. To us, the Futunuan captured n hold them until Kau'ulufonua got there. Then he ordered their teeth's to be pulled and made them chew the kava. The kava was drunk n i believe the body was used as 'fono'.
However the Futunuan version is interesting n there is merit to it. One of our Tongan proverbs says 'Vete faka-Futuna' ~depart/goodbye the Futunuan way. It means, you're free ( or allow) to take whatever you want from someone, with no restriction. Hmmmm...make me wonder...why didn't we say 'Vete faka-Vaihi' or 'Vete faka-Tahisi'...looks like the Futunuan had the upper hand on us, as this story states

From this I gather he was returning with more warriors but the futunans handed over the assassins aswell giving good hospitality to the Tu'is brother whom he left behind. This is in response was received well by the Tu'i and thus made it tradition that when tongan vaka came to shore in futuna the futunans were allowed to take what they pleased even the vacant itself as tribute but when time came for departure the futunans would send us out to sea handsomely. I recently read the account of William mariners time in tonga he said while he was there in ha'apai a war chief arrived from Fiji name Cao moala as he put it and with him were a few futunan warriors whom he picked up on his voyages 😊

The ifi leaves are worn as a sign of humility so when Kau'ulufonua Fekai arrived with his warriors to Futuna he was surprised how they dressed so Vetefakafutuna came from that and the two assassinator's teeth was knocked out to chew the kava at that proclamation then later on killed. Kau'ulufonua Fekai was like the 23rd or 24th Tu'i Tonga but there is a Uvean Legend that goes back to the beginning of the Tu'i Tonga.
"Malo Lailai (Greeting In fagauvean) alright so there was a legend of a powerful warrior who was referred to as ahu'eto he was a power legendary warrior who conquered the people of Fanguvea. He was from what we called in our legend and myths "Polianga oe fukau ngàahe tahi tui tonga' which translates to 'land and kingdom of adventures seas." After conquering the island it was said that he intermarried with a local ouvean women. After that he would bring many tongans to intermarry with the locals which brought the rise of fagauvea. The son of Aho'etu who was referred to as Mana'tukua who was known as the legendary chief of fagauvea he helped unify the whole of uvea island by the help of Mighty tongan warriors. This legend is mainly about "the rise of fagauvea" or "kou e Mahiki xere hake le fagauvea."

Fiji and Tonga are really close history wise, king maafu conquered the lau islands and teamed up with Tui nayau (a fijian chief) to conquer the rest of fiji because different parts of Fiji had different kings,after the victory Tui nayau gifted him the island of vanua balavu where he lived and died and his grave is still there today.
@The Meek FIJI was not an easy place to conquer it consisted of thousands of warring tribes scattered over 300 islands with rugged terrains even the lau islands were plagued with constant inter-tribal warfare thus it made it easier for maafu to extend his influence over it but despite that fact he still was not able to fully subdue it one of his final battles was against the mualevu people in nabavatu which his armies which his barely survived if not the cakau warriors . Also cakobau was ruling only a portion of central fiji and even he had encountered some terrible losses at the hands of his enemies such as those in lovoni hill folk from ovalau and also navatusila highlanders from navosa . Another interesting battle was the siege of kedekede in which tongan mercenaries along with their lakeba overlords were slaughtered by a combined force from the mainland led by the gonesau warriors of nakorotubu whom the lauans named the puaka loa and this occured before maafu came to fiji . My point is fiji was one of the most warlike cultures in the pacific no matter how strong you think you are there will always be someone to fight

@@billtagi7237 wow i know Tonga had disastrous campaign in fiji i have no doubt Samoa would of had its fair share of battles with Fiji through the Tui Manu’a, but I have a feeling we were not as hostile to Fiji as Tonga was. But somewhere in history something went wrong between us as Fa’atoga is the word for coward and Fa’afiti means betrayal.

He only earned his name Kau'ulufonua "Fekai" after he made those two chew the kava after they knocked their teeth out before they made them chew the kava. Polynesians aren't known for cannibalism. They only do it out of rage or intimidation to make their enemy scared. Yes there were cases of cannibals at Tonga but rare like the story in Vava'u at the island of Kapa. But the names Tamasia and Malofafa does sounds like a Futuna names. I had no idea they did this kava ceremony at Futuna. I thought they brought back to Tonga and punished them at the vaifkava there...hahahaha

Tupou Havea although the Tongan Kingdom had a very successful network under it’s kingdom, historians even stated with ACTUAL evidence that the Tu’i Tonga Kingdom fell long before the white man could sail. The fall of the Tu’i Tonga Kingdom fell after the Samoans rebelled from the tyranny of Tu’i Tonga Talakaifaiki. When other nations heard of this, they also rebelled. It is true that you occupied most of Polynesia for 4 centuries but that all came crashing down after both the Tu’i Ha’atakalaua and Tu’i Kanokupolu was formed. Tonga was not all mighty. If they did, they would still have these islands under their belts and have each island fall under Tonga and be subdivided into archipelagos like Tonga has now (Ha’apai, Vava’u, Tongatapu and Niua). If the Tongan Empire was so successful, why did they struggle so much to keep each island? Why did the natives of each occupied island HATE the empire? Why was there so much tyranny? No one has the answers to these questions except for our ancestors who actually lived during the period. We cannot speak for them because we don’t know anything, we only know what the white men teach us, and knowing the whites, they love to put bits and bobs here and there to see how we, the so called “primitive” beings would react to such things. I’m not saying the historians are wrong, they just tend to muck things up every now and then🤷♀️
Tupou Havea for example, historians said Polynesians were the most successful navigators in the world, and now they’re trying to take it back and now saying that we found our islands by accident because we were too “primitive” to know how to navigate the ocean...
Being Sāmoan i understand what he's talking about. And listening to Futunan,Tuvaluan,Tokelauan,Niuatoputapuan and without a doubt say that the language is 95% relateable to Sāmoan.

People don't be surprised about the language , u should all know by now the Polynesians are related given they have the same origins. Therefore, we look similar, similar language, culture, food, stories etc. our languages could even be seen as dialects that became more distinct over time living on separate islands spread over the pacific.

@@manuhamoa Yes! Samoic Outliers share strong mutual intelligibility with most Ellician Outlier languages. Tuvaluans and Tokelauans can use their language interchangeably, I have relatives who habitually switch between languages mid sentence, the main phonological change are just some letters and thats about it. Tuvaluans use a lot of F's and S's reminiscent of Samoan whereas Tokelauan replaces both of those with H's i.e Fakafetai Lasi in Tuvaluan becomes Hakahetai Lahi in Tokelauan. When we watched the movie Mercenary on Netflix (It's about a Wallisian Rugby Player moving to France) my partner almost didn't need the subtitles when he was speaking Wallisian. I did more research and found out that a lot of Outlier languages such as Luangiuan, Sikaianan, the Niuas of Tonga, Tikopian, Rennellese, Bellonese, Kapingamarangi, Nukuoro, Vaeakau-Taumako and many more share the exact same language structure and possesive pronouns with the only difference being changes in pronounciation and phonology. Basically if someone from either of these islands spoke slowly to eachother and bore in mind changes in consanants they can very much understand eachother, Tuvaluans and Tokelauans finding it easier because they do it constantly.

I attended a huge Pacific Arts exhibition in Brisbane last year and met a PNG woman from Nukumanu Island, another Polynesian outlier who spoke very proudly of her ancestry who apparently left Samoa for Kiribati, then migrated to Nukumanu. Being Tongan and having friends of other islands its safe to say he is speaking with a strong Lapita trait . The Lapita are on of the oldest civilisations that gave birth to offspring that would soon be called Tongans. Now that The Tongans are direct desendants of the Lapita . Thank you it is time to update our knowledge. The Tongans are not descendants of Lapita. The Lapita people were not Polynesians, they were a different race. This has been proven Genetically. Even the very name Lapita is a hoax. It was a mistaken name from South East New Caledonia. There were two waves of Polynesians. All originated from Taiwan and instead of coming South as the Lapita theory has it, they went up North, to North America and down to South America. To all Tongans just so you know the furthest we can remember of our place of origin is the Lau group(Lapita migration) in Fiji called Pulotu. We were a Pulotu warring clan who came to Tonga and waged war in Samoa. Both Islands weren't named yet lol. The Tu'i Tonga came from there on.

There's no way you think Tonga conquered anything in Fiji. Lau was a small province with a few islands, no leader and a population of humble fishermen. You will definitely not read about this anywhere but Tongans thought went north and got slaughtered by 1 village in Taveuni. One village. There was some help from their cousins the Pusiloa across the bay in Vanua Levu but that intent to start war in a different part of the land ended before it even started.
