How to paint custom Tieks: Shifts, flakes, powders, micas

- In this video I show how I customize Tieks using shift flakes, shift powders, and micas. Shift colors may also be called chameleon colors or chameleon shifts. You can find these on Amazon, Etsy, eBay or SolarColorDust.com (and I’m sure other places also). You will need: a prepped shoe on a shoe form, angelus black, angelus neutral, angelus high gloss sealer. I purchase them direct here:
angelusdirect....
but they can also be found in other places. As always, if you have questions just leave a comment! If you have a suggestion for another beginner video please leave it in the comments.

HOW WONDERFUL.. LOVE THEM YOUR AMAZING. AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR WORK WITH US,
THOSE ARE PERFECT, LOVE THEM!!!!!
I just did a pair of my shoes following your instructions! Thanks for the free tutorial.
I’m glad it helped!
Thank you for this video! I was thinking about doing this and it helps to see it in action.
Your videos are so great and helpful, thanks for doing them!
I’m so glad they have helped!
Do you have a video of how you did the blue "lines" on top of the color shift layer to make it look like scales?
@mbolambz9875 I just used a liner brush and drew them with paint on top. I usually did a little light shading in the V area between the scales to give it more of a 3d look.
Thanks for your reply! What brand mica powder do you recommend? I really want to experiment with an older pair. I looked in amazon, I see a lot of results that says "mica powder for epoxy resin, candles, nail polish, etc" is that the same kind?
@ solarcolordust is a very reliable source. Mica is just mica, it’s a powder and used for all sorts of things! Chameleon mica/powder is what you want for color shifts.
I'm going to experiment on Lilac Tieks. I still have to paint it black for the base color like in this video right? So that the color shift will pop? I wonder what it looks like underneath Lilac when using the deglazer. I want the end result to still look like a dark purple/dark pink with blue-ish color shifts 🤞
@mbolambz9875 if you want the true colors of the shift to be as bright as possible then black will make it show best. If there is a color you want to pull more from the shift you can sometimes use a dark version of the color you want pulled. Like if you want to show more purple/pinks you might want to paint it a dark purple instead of black. You can always do a small patch and if you don’t like it just clean it off some and do black after that.
Watching your videos trying to decide if I should paint these tieks I found at the goodwill bins! They look pretty good, but someone accidentally got spray paint on the heel of ONE of them. I'm trying to remove the spray paint but ALL the paint is coming off with the spray paint. :/
You should totally paint them and have a custom pair! It’s not that hard, just remember to be patient and take your time and use thin layers of anything you use. You can always ask any questions you have along the way and I’ll be happy to answer them.
Thank you!!:)
Love this! Thank you so much. Would love to see how you do patents with powders if you feel like making another video sometime. :) Do you spray with adhesive promoter? Just wondering - have seen that mentioned, but have been too scared to try it myself.
I’m glad it’s helped! Unfortunately there are a few things I won’t share and patent shifts are one of them. It took me experimenting for over 2 years to figure out something that worked. I do not use an adhesion promoter so I can’t tell you how that works.
does this make the shoes stiff? thank you for sharing !
It doesn’t! You should only be putting on a few layers of anything and make sure they are thin. None I have customized have ever been stiff.
If I have a pair of matte black, and I deglaze them, do I need to paint them black before using the neutral, or can I go right on to the neutral paint? Thanks!
You can just use the neutral 😊
@@tieksresort thanks!! I bought all the supplies and can’t wait for them to arrive to get started. You’re awesome!!
Hello. I have some taupe tieks that I want to make opal. Would you suggest painting them white first?
You would need to paint them the color you want the base to be. White Opal would need to be painted white first. It will take a few coats so make sure you add them in thin layers, don’t try thicker layers to make it faster or it will crack.
Ok. Tysm
If I want to color shift some California navy that I have, can I just paint the neutral paint on top of the leather or do I have to do some sort of stripping of the original shoe first?
You will need to prep your shoe first before painting with any kind of paint if you want it to last. I have another video that shows how to prep Tieks. California navy are pretty easy.
@@tieksresort Thank you! I will look up the other video
Hello! I'm planning to try changing matte black to a shimmery baby pink. I will deglaze, paint a sand color, paint pink, coat with neutral, mica powder, high gloss finisher, then spray with the water repellent. Do you think this will be too many coats of product causing cracks?
As long as you do thin coats on each and make sure the leather is stretched, it should be ok. I’ve done black to light pink (on my own so they’d match a mini pair) and did the sand, white, pink, and seal. If the pink you’re wanting is very light you may want to do sand then either white or add white to lighten the next layer of sand for a nice lighter base. It just does take more layers to get from black to a light color but if you take your time and do very thin coats, what you have planned should be just fine!
