What a splendid, informal and charming film! Let's hope these smaller railway lines are kept in use. The landscape of the Crouch Valley and the glorious aerial shots which show it off so well, remind us that there are still extensive & unspoiled areas of our countryside, which really must be preserved.

This is as good as anything Michael Portillo has broadcast on his railway tours. I particularly liked the aerial views. Well done.

There used to be a beautiful station building at althorne with a waiting room with an open fire and old station clock . There was a black lab from the station cottages who would walk over to meet each train in the 60's
Althorne there was a train derailment of a gravel train in Althorne in the 60's
The gates across the track and signals were all manually operated and in the 70's there was a station master who lived there but used to oversleep 🙄 And could often be seen running down the platform pulling on his kit to raise the signal for the train from Burnham which was stuck and tooting to attract his attention
They were the good old days .....

I remember catching the train from Althorne as a child with my mother, I remember the station building quite clearly, my mother used to call these small branch railways 'a rabbit and bluebell line'.

Thanks very much to John for making me aware of this wonderful film. I have been living in Burnham for the last 2 years and it is wonderful to learn little tid-bits about the area. I would love to present something like this myself!

My Aunt and Uncle lived in Southminster and I have fond memories of travelling on trains in the mid 1970s as a child. Coming from NZ it was a bit of a culture shock but i do remember the station. i think at the time Dick Emery used it as a location for a sketch...

Many thanks for watching and your comments. Interesting that it was used in the Dick Emery sketch. It would be great to find the clip if it still exists.

    Hi Craig,
What a lovely video ; my partner and I watched this afternoon.
We loved your shots and presenting style - you should have your own tv show!
Are you planning on making more videos like this?
Love from Ben & Catalina; Manningtree, Essex.
