Great reaction! Also, re: your question about why Clarice didn't "call in" for help before trying to get Bill at the end: you have to remember that this is taking place in 1991, and so she doesn't have a cell phone or any other means of communication to call for backup. She's technically "off-duty" and came to the house in her own cheap car, so it's not equipped with any sort of "police radio" or car-phone. That's why she asks to use Bill's phone before he starts running - because the only alternative would be for Clarice to run back to her car, drive away, and try to find another home/store/gas station with a phone she could safely use. And she knew that by the time she did all that, Catherine would be dead and Bill would've fled the premises, destroying the one lead she had to find him.
I was fortunate enough to attend a special screening of "Silence of the Lambs" hosted by Jonathan Demme and legendary film critic Pauline Kael. As the ending shot went on... and on... and on, Kael jokingly asked Demme if he forgot to call "Cut!" Demme sheepishly admitted that he didn't know how to end the shot, so he just let the camera roll.
Great reaction. Those strange looks and stares we kept seeing from men were intentional. We are meant to be seeing events directly from Clarice’s eyes, a petite woman looking up into the gazes of all of these potential predators. Every flipping man hitting on her, undressing her with his eyes. Women are taught to be on guard 24/7 against assailants, and this film gives you a glimpse into how that might feel.
I've never seen another movie so accurately portray what it's like to be a woman! Barney was a sweetheart, though, and I thought the entomologist who wanted to go out for cheeseburgers was polite and forthcoming at least.
@@natsinthebelfry I've read the book a few times and Barney is the only one who treats Lecter with respect so Lecter also respects him. When he gets transferred he thanks Barney for treating him as a human being. Of course, also Barney was kinda the only one who never forgot how dangerous Lecter was and always kept his guard. That's why Lecter couldn't get away before Chilton forgot his pen in his cell. Also, the entomologist was really just honestly nice and Clarice liked him in the novel
Well Hannibal Lecter is the son of Lithunian count so he has manners. First movie: Hannibal Rising tells about his chilhood durin WWII. How Nazis murder his parents and later his sister gets eaten by Soviets. Second movie: The Red Dragon. Third movie: Silent of Lambs. Fourth movie: Hannibal. Clarisse remains Hannibal of his late little sister.
This is in my opinion, one of the top three movies of ALL TIME. It won the big five at the oscars, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. Phenomenal work of art with amazingly complex characters and Jodie's portrayal of Clarice is something we will never see again - Clarice Starling is a very complex and relatable character who isn't overpowered, impossibly strong for her size- but rather an intelligent individual who is relentlessly embracing her femininity. Through her pure intentions and authenticity, Jodie's character became a symbol of divine power motivated by pure desires to save weaker individuals in her world. Despite the fact she will never be as physically strong as the men who tower over her, she preservers because she sees saving other innocent lives as a parallel to saving the lambs. The whole point Jodie was trying to make was that in the past, since women didn't have the strength or "heroism" that could compare to men, Hollywood often resorts to crafting lazy, unrealistic female heroines (i.e marvel women) who possess unfathomable qualities and don't come across as relatable at all. Besides this, often the only redeeming quality of women's characters in film is their attractiveness, or their relevance is limited to being as the love intrest to their male costars. The Silence of the Lambs changed that when Clarice Starling appeared on screen. The producers took the time to flesh out Jodie's character, Clarice, thereby allowing this talented actress to portray an authentic female role who embodies the characteristics of someone motivated by a well-developed moral compass rather than such trivial, one-dimensional(a relief for audiences). She is then juxtaposed against her male colleagues, almost all of whom are motivated purely by advancement rather than the cause itself.
The story was inspired by the time the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile for the green river killer and when they finally caught him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The scene where Buffalo bill kidnaps Catherine is also inspired by Bundy who would pretend to have a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something in his car so the woman he wanted would help him and he would hit her over the head and push her in his car. The character of Buffalo Bill is inspired by a few serial killers including Ed Gein who besides killing a few people would also steal recently buried bodies and use their body parts to make things like a lampshade and a pair of gloves made from human skin and furniture made from bones and skulls. I recently found out that the actors who played Buffalo Bill and Catherine actually dated during the filming of the movie. The guy you thought was papa from stranger things was not him, Matthew Modine played papa.
1. This thing snagged all 5 of the big OSCARS 2. IRL you're wasting your time guys trying to pick that up. She doesn't do men. 3. Lt. Boyle also played "Murdock I'm commin' to get you". Rambo II 4. Ted Levine got death threats for the performance he did playing Buffalo Bill. 5. The FBI actually let them use Quantico. 6. The lisping following "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." was ad lib to see if she would freak out. It was the first scene they did together and it worked. 7. Hannibal was treating Clairice. 8. Catherine didn't hurt the dog. She just told him she did.
You should watch some David Lynch movies such as Eraserhead (weirdest), Lost Highway (thriller), Mulholland Drive (best story), or Inland Empire (my personal favorite)
This was inspired by the serial killer/grave robber Ed Gein. He used skin and bones to make things. Worth a Wikipedia to read about him and see some of the stuff he made. Great reaction!
There were no cell phones. You're not the first to ask about her calling for backup. She would have had to leave and find a phone. He could have disappeared in her absence.
You have to watch the NBC Hannibal TV show its only three seasons and its fucking AMAZING. It blows dexter out of the water. Nothing comes close to the quality of that show.
Great eye, bro. I've never had it confirmed but I've long suspected that the guy on the floor everyone kept calling Pembry was actually Anthony Hopkins, wearing his own face, only it's dark and bloody so kind of hard to tell. I think they did it as sort of an easter egg for people who had already seen it. Love your speculations. This is what movie reactions are all about for me. Also, I have to admit I laughed at that kid on his bike. I just never noticed before.
One unique feature of this movie is abundance of close-up frontal shots. Do you know what they remind? Photos of the suspects / murderers from the police chronicle. Nice technique.
I read the book in a small pop-up camper in the middle of the west Virginian woods when I was 11..the irony of that was totally lost on me back then..lol saw the film later in my teens and it was a definite favorite.. Great reaction!!
Like someone else said, the weird looks the men all seemed to give her was to drive home the feeling she was alone and vulnerable. Another thing to keep in mind, at this point it was still pretty rare for a woman to be in law enforcement beyond being a meter maid or working a desk, and even more rare for a woman to be an FBI field agent. This is all happening right about the time that particular glass ceiling is being broken, and agent Starling is probably one of the only ones many of these men have seen.
A young fellow is about to encounter the warped/cunning mind of Hannibal Lechter. I had read the book before seeing the movie, so I thought I was ready. Clarice Starling walks up to Lechter's cell and I am stunned. Standing there, he exudes Menace, views people as potential prey, doesn't blink his "dead shark eyes," and gets into Clarice Starling's head toot suite.
Quite a few people end up in bad situations because they are afraid of being impolite or offending someone. Maybe it's because they sense something is unusual and they think being polite will see them through or merely because they are taught to be receptive to courtesy and polite when possible.
24:37 🚫📱 It’s the early 90’s so there’s no cell phones & she’s just a trainee so she has no walkie-talkie or beeper either! I strongly doubt that Bill has a landline either.
Just found this channel today and very glad I did. I'll be waiting for your reaction to Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 thriller Psycho so as to complete a certain trilogy. Also very eager to see what you think of another Jonathan Demme(second E is not silent BTW) picture, my favorite courtroom drama, Philadelphia(1993).
Actually I wanted to ask you if there will be a reaction from you to "Scream", instead you reacted to this much better classic and entertained us in the best way, that's what I call a nice surprise.😁
I was 16 when I first saw the movie at the theatre; when it just won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor [Hopkins] and Best Actress [Foster]. So I thought I'd check the movie out and see what the hype was all about. And boy, they were right. The moment I walked out of the theatre it was raining and my legs felt weak and feeble. I really thought the killer was after me. It was scary back then. Now, this movie is my favourite movie of all time. Hands down.
Great reaction, bud! ♥ I think you'd really enjoy the films in the Hannibal franchise, they're all pretty tense. Red Dragon (2002), Silence/Lambs (1991), Hannibal (2001), Hannibal Rising (2007). The tv series is outstanding too, Mads Mikkelsen plays Hannibal perfectly. At the beginning of the tv series Dr. Lecter is still free and a well respected, practicing psychiatrist - who sometimes helps the FBI with cases. Unbeknownst to the authorities, he is the serial killer they are seeking, dubbed 'The Chesapeake Ripper' by the press.
I really appreciate your reactions. Btw, my family is from WV as well. Just so you know, it is pronounced Jonathan Dem-me. On a different note, I don't think you were slow to get stuff. Actually, I was annoyed that you were so perceptive and got stuff it took me a bit to get! It was quite impressive. However, everyone agrees Hopkins performance is legendary.
And Jodie Foster as Clarice was amazing too! She is a very good actress and is worth checking out in other performances, including the ones she did as a child.
Fun fact, the closeups on Clarice and Hannibal during their conversations are intentionally unsettling. Director Jonathan Demme had the actors look directly into camera, breaking the fourth wall, so it would feel like they’re staring at you. Hopkins exaggerated his eye contact for this reason. Also Jodie Foster actually filmed the night vision scene in pitch black darkness. Her falls are genuine. They don’t make ‘‘em like this anymore. Fantastic movie.
more important than when did hannibal last have skin to skin contact, is when was the last time he had NON VIOLENT contact? whether done to him, or him doing to others, hannibal's life has been a path of blood and suffering... all the way back to his childhood in lithuania.
There are another movies with Hannibal Lecter that I recommend you to watch. In chronical order there is the Red Dragon which is how Hannibal was captured and also involves another serial killer just like in Silence of the Lambs, then there is the Silence of the Lambs and the last one is Hannibal. Also there is Hannibal Rising which is about young Hannibal Lecter and the reason behind his actions. :-) All great movies. P.S love you reactions ❤
i scrapped the idea of the tier list at the end of every video. i was mostly watching movies that were largely considered good or great and was crowding the S and A tiers, making it nearly impossible to be able to fit it on the screen anymore lol i'll probably revisit the tierlist every year or something and update it
When I saw this in the theatre (was 8? Too young?) When the end credits rolled...everyone just sat in the theatre, *no one* getting up to get to their car, watching Lecter casually saunter into our world to be amongst us. 🔥!

I always have to question my own morality when I side with a cannibal because they only kill the rude and obnoxious and leave courteous people alone 😂
What makes Lecter particularly dangerous? There’s his intellect, but I think it’s even more so his charisma.
Yes intelligent

The body in the bathtub is the owner of that house.
Was she a great big fat person?
R.I.P. Mrs. Lipman

Loved your reaction!!! Subbed!! I like your personality!! Such a chill guy!!!

If you watch and listen carefully, when the agent presses the doorbell, it buzzes. When Bill comes up from the basement, his doorbell ding-dongs.
Funny that you called it a “torture dungeon”. You should see how the basement is described in the book.
