I have tried to use flare and bend every way that I can following this tutorial and it just doesn't work. I am not sure if its different because I have the newest version but I would love to figure out how to do this correctly.
The deformer was'nt working for me until i changed the start flare x and end flare x exactly as he done in the video before he rotated it. For anyone else who gets stuck on his bit
@Dhroov BMX Nonlinear deformers automatically apply themselves to selected geometry along the Y axis (vertically). He built his shape so that the extra edge loops were along the X axis (horizontally). See the result at 8:25 - the deformer (represented by the green line) is perpendicular to the object. Normally when you are deforming things, you rotate them to line up with the object first, then play with the start and end settings, etc., to deform it. When you do it that way it won't deform until you make changes to the settings, which is probably the way you should do it when you're first starting to play with them. He made changes first to show that it didn't give him the shape he wanted and then rotated it to show that it would change the shape when you rotate and translate, cool extra features but not so clear for someone new to it.

You need to increase the subdivision caps before changing the objects shape. Once you change its shape by manually moving vertices, the helper node won't know how to align the new subdivisions properly.
I've been wondering why when I use flare deformer when I try to rotate, its not bending like yours. My perspective view not like yours. After follow exactly your perspective veiw (rotate the camera view to front) and create a new wings model then everything ok hahha

when I soft select with B, it doesn't create a gradient, it just selects everything in yellow (and thus, doesn't work as an "area of effect" like it does for you.) Any idea why?

When I try and duplicate special, the duplicates stretch what seems to be infinitely across the Y axis.... I think it's something to do with the curvature lines not uh, going away after bending the fin. Any idea why its behaving like this?
Hmm, have you tried going to Duplicate Special and going to Edit > Reset Settings, then re-setting it up? It's possible some other setting is messing with things too.
I have a lot experience working with blender, but I have to start working with Maya. Its harder than expected, but this tutorial series is really helpful. It's also hard to find good tutorials for Maya. Is it just for the tutorials or isn't Maya working with as much shortcuts as Blender? I kinda miss them.
Nah, Maya has a ton of hotkeys (so many that literally every button is accounted for). I just don't get into them in these early tutorials since there's already a lot for beginners to take in. If you'd like to see a list of all hotkeys, you can check out this reference: help.autodesk.com/view/MAYAUL/2020/ENU/?guid=GUID-30CACC9D-8FBE-4B85-8A8F-C5ADF32DDD4E I also have a video on the Top 10 hotkeys as well: ua-cam.com/video/wCrC4ypg8ms/v-deo.html
@@Autodesk_Maya Woah, didn't expected that fast response. Good to know about that shortcuts, it's a bit irritating that all hotkeys work different from Blender, but it would be the same situation if I would switch from Maya 2 Blender. Maya has more common with unity and Unreal though. Is there a shortcut to drag an object or vertex free or along axis without using the arrows, just the mouse? Like on Blend press "G" and maybe "X, Y or Z" for move along axis. I guess this question answers itself if I continue watching your tutorials :)
@@Anldiot69 You can Alt + arrow when an object is selected to move it a pixel at a time in each direction for very precise placement, but that's a little slow as a primary means of translation. One alternative I use frequently is you can middle-drag any field in the Channel Box to use what's called a "virtual slider" (that is, it'll increment the value up and down as you drag, much like a slider would).
i'm getting started with Maya in my studies, and i come from blender, i miss every shortcuts of blender lol even basic grab/scale/rotate keybinds because they make more sens in blender for me especially on a azerty keyboard... gotta train that muscle memory

Try tapping J and then rotating. Does it rotate in intervals? If you're on an older version of Maya, you may not have the "hold" J functionality, but you can still quickly toggle it on and off by tapping.

sir, i am using maya 2019 student version and in that when i press B colour grading is not appearing. what should i do to fix this?
Try going to the Tool Settings with a Move/Rotate/Scale tool selected, then turn on Soft Select there. If you still don't see a color grade, increase the Radius size.
Can't duplicate the booster with shift+LMB, help please.
Which version of Maya are you using? If it's an older version, you can alternately just press Ctrl + D with an object selected to duplicate it.
@@Autodesk_Maya I'm using the 2018 version, I used Shift+D to duplicate then moved the booster.
@@edgarl.f.4471 Move tool settings - Smart Duplicate Settings - Shift +Drag to Duplicate Objects Checkbox
SHIFT+D to duplicate. This tutorial is wrong with the Shift+Drag. Doesn't work in version 2017.
@@fedorcheboksary Worked like a charm!! Thank you!
Nice way of teaching 💐😋
When I try and duplicate special, the duplicates stretch what seems to be infinitely across the Y axis.... I think it's something to do with the curvature lines not uh, going away after bending the fin. Any idea why its behaving like this?
Hmm, have you tried going to Duplicate Special and going to Edit > Reset Settings, then re-setting it up? It's possible some other setting is messing with things too.
This is really cool, one question if I may, does the boolean union function act the same as mesh combine? thanks for sharing.
Not quite. Union will remove all the inner geometry while Combine will leave it alone.
@@Autodesk_Maya Ah ok thank you for your reply!
Your are genius bro thanks 🙏🏿😊😊😊
how do i manage to do exactly as he does in this video and it doesn't work...
having the same problems i think its because im using a later version
real confused by the "flare"- maybe its because im using a newer version, but i cant get a handle.
If you'd like to see a list of all hotkeys, you can check out this reference: help.autodesk.com/view/MAYAUL/2020/ENU/?guid=GUID-30CACC9D-8FBE-4B85-8A8F-C5ADF32DDD4E
I also have a video on the Top 10 hotkeys as well: ua-cam.com/video/wCrC4ypg8ms/v-deo.html
You used Booleans/Union option at the beginning of the video. I learned to use Mesh/Combine, which is really similar. What is fundamental difference between these two??
Combine will keep any internal geometry, while Union will remove faces inside the object.
@@Autodesk_Maya nice
I'm having a hard time with the "J" command for the 15-degree interval turns on the porthole cylinder. I'm holding the key down and trying to rotate, but it doesn't rotate at all unless I release the J key and rotate free-form. Can someone help me? Please? :)
Try tapping J and then rotating. Does it rotate in intervals? If you're on an older version of Maya, you may not have the "hold" J functionality, but you can still quickly toggle it on and off by tapping.
It doesn't seem to matter if I tap or hold the J
I'm using Maya 2018
wow nice and easy tutorial
Okay - stuck on the "shift + move" thing. I'm shifting, it ain't copying. So.... ?
