"Lemak" does not only mean fat or oily. The word "lemak" in Bahasa Malaysia is also used to describe rich, creamy and/or savoury flavour profile. The incorrect translation of the word "lemak" does injustice to nasi lemak, which is a well balanced meal and tastes heavenly.

We do that as offerings to Lord Murugan because we believe that when we do those offerings, he helps us. Also, the ones doing that they usually dont feel pain but that depends on the person. We celebrate it to thank the Sun, Mother Nature and also the farm animals, which are cows and buffaloes and all that sort because those animals help contribute to a bountiful harvest. So thats why we can't eat cow meat. Thaipusam is actually a celebration for Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva because it is believed that he defeated the Asuras, meaning the bad guys by the Vel (divine spear) that his mother, Goddess Parvati presented to him. But some also says that Thaipusam is celebrated because it marks Lord Murugan's birthday which falls on either May or June and his astrology star is known as "Pusam" which is the original word for Thaipusam

I would like to correct the statement from our fellow Khalid here about Thaipusam. The reason that devotees pierce their body is not solely for sacrifice. Lord Muruga is known has lord of war and widely devoted by Tamil people. He is called as Tamil kadaval Murugar (Tamil God). Piercing is done during that time to get immune with exposure of sharp entities and to get prepare for war.
