I like this one because of the way you treated your employees. You gave them a job to do and you let them do it. You ask why and offered suggestions, your guys had good answers as to their why and why not.

I like the thinking on the boulder spacing, it's always useful to have another set of eyes to offer a counterpoint after you've been looking at something all day.
I'd be interested in some vague ballpark pricing on these jobs, just for context.

That excavator sure looks like it has a nice reach on the arm, and the thumb is definitely nice for picking up and pivoting rocks for placement. Back in 1992 and 93 I worked for a local landscape company out of Eagan/ Inver Grove Heights. Myself and another guy were the boulder retaining wall crew. The company had a one-ton and a 5-ton dump truck, and a Case 1845b and a Case 1845c skid steers. We built those walls with one of the skid steers. I don't even think we had pallet forks, lol. We simply used the bucket of the skid steer, and the other guy on the ground with a long steel rod helping to pivot and position boulders. We would hook boulders in the bucket that did not fit in it, and would literally have two guys hanging off the back of the skid steer to provide rear weight occasionally. We built multi-tier walls, and the skid steer would drive along the top of the bottom wall, to build the second wall up, and so on. You have to build a pretty darn tough wall to hold a 6,000 lb machine while you're placing and pivoting rocks on the next wall up.
I bought that Case 1845b 5 years ago from the owner when he retired, and I still use it around my yard.

I love doin rock work like this. Really get to be creative and create something that the customer gets to enjoy for a long time. I got to do a project like this but a bit bigger on 2 custom houses last summer. Had rock walls all over the 2 acre property. Every kind too. Did 2 big split stacked walls in the front yards, single row round rocks for all the window wells an a nice stacked round rock wall in one of the back yards. Sure hope I get to do more rock work soon. Very fulfilling once it all comes together. Never get that kind of satisfaction just puttin pipe in the ground

      Hey bud!
I landscape professionally, and while I often need larger equipment such as a tractor and dump trailer, 90% of the jobs I do require nothing more than a spade, a leaf rake, a bow take, a wheelbarrow, and a push broom.
Even small jobs require good attention to detail, and you will need to develop lots of skills and strength.
Since you can't drive yet, see if there are locals who need someone to weed their gardens and flower beds.
Believe it or not, pulling weeds is a very important skill.
Learn how to pull them with as much root as possible still attached, and eventually do it without gloves.
That will help build your hand strength and toughness.
Eventually, you'll be pulling thistles barehanded.
When you are old enough, join a crew, and learn how the old guys do things.
Odds are, they have learned how to do things efficiently to avoid some of the aches and pains that come from a life of manual labor, lol.

hi Stanley, since you talk to equipment reps, i would like to say something you can maybe pass on to them as feedback, those makita (or any company) sweepers with many different swappable attachments, manufacturers should make the change out bit square, we have a ryobi one and it's oval in shape but it is starting to spin and act like a circle, if they were made square they couldn't turn from moter tauque. it seem all the companies make them ovals, and they wear into a circle too easy.

Great Video! I have all kinds of yard issues that I felt should have been addressed before the building phase, now I've spent the last year paying to have things done and after more than 5k, It still isn't right. Contractor has pretty much high tailed it, and left me with his worthless word. So, if you do make it to Dallas to help KD, maybe you can help me out as well. I'm not that far from Dallas.
