Gabriel Knight 2 : The Beast Within - The Opera Scene

- The opera sequence near the end of the game GK2 The Beast Within. It is the first performance of a long lost Wagner opera about werewolves called "Der Fluch des Engelhart" [The Curse of Engelhart] which was composed to 'save' King Ludwig over hundred years ago.
Friedrich von Glower is invited as one of the special guests. Gabriel has made his way on the stage for the third act as Engelhart.
If you are afraid of getting spoilt, don't watch this!
Okay - I'm in this - I was Von Glower's date - the blonde. I'm SO glad you posted this. My girls wanted to see this but I didn't want to play through the whole game to show them. VERY cool!
That's so cool!
Would you be willing to do a short interview about your work on the game?
So cool! Would love to hear any memories you have from the shoot :)
@@BezoRazo It was a great experience. My audition process was a little weird. Had to sit on the directors lap and try and seduce him which was super awkward but... showbiz. I hung out with people for about a week - including with Nicolas Worth who was a delightful human and stellar actor. We sat around a lot telling stories, playing games, asking questions. Nicholas was SAG-AFTRA (actors union), so part of the requirement was an incredible spread of food - which was fantastic. Only the people you see in the opera box were present - and we worked in "green screen" (it was blue). So, none of the curtains were there... the opera wasn't there... no Gabriel (though I did see him once on set). Principle was wrapped by our shoot. The opera wasn't shown for us - nor the transformation. We had to react to what the director was saying, "Laugh here it's something funny" - "Laugh to eachother" "Look at him, he's acting strange." Also, Peter (Von Glower) was very handsome and VERY tall. I was about 5'10" in heels and he towered over me. He asked me out for sushi after but he was married so HARD PASS. Nicolas tried to get me to change my name and use his last name as my last name (not marriage just cool sounding) for a stage name. I am a gamer, so this was a rad experience. ALSO... I was friends with Al Lowe of Leisure Suit Larry fame (also Sierra) and he wanted me to design some graphics for him for his next project because I found a bug in his game "Black Cauldron" - being in a video game whilst being a gamer was super cool and yes I played Beast Within and I still own my original copy. Any other questions? Happy to answer!
@@BezoRazo also - my best friend (not an actress) on a whim auditioned and got a security guard in one of the scenes... but she wasn't a cut scene character.
@@karatemomma Wow! What an awesome experience! And your recollection is so vivid that one would think you were describing events from last week instead of **checks calendar** 30 YEARS AGO! 🤯 So rad! Thanks so much for sharing! I know you've already played it, but I'm sure fans would get a real kick out of you doing your own Let's Play of the game on your YT channel providing a running commentary of your memories and industry insights along the way (particularly for the scenes you're in). Would be a real treat for all the GK geeks out there, myself included! 😁
Those opera singers take "The show must go on" to a whole new level!
abcabc: Yes, Ludwig II was the "Mad Prince" who built lavish, expensive castles and was eventually deposed by Bismarck. Everything in this game had a grain of truth, the church, the places in Munich. Only the werewolves were fiction (maybe).
Jane Jensen is such a genius! The way she managed to come up with the idea that the music and the acoustics from this part of the opera could trigger a transformation into wolf form because of the way Ludwig felt when he heard certain parts of Wagner's operas is just brilliant. The whole game is brilliant! I only wish it were possible to make a 4th game. :(
12 years later but you are 100% right, an absolutely incredible idea :)
in terms of game stories/scripts The Beast Within is a CLEAR candidate for the number 1 of all times
@@charliez077 Thanks dude! I vaguely remember making this comment but oh yes is it still true. If things improve over at Activision Blizzard maybe, just maybe there'll be an opportunity for Sierra classics to get a new life and more importantly, that Jane gets a chance to return to the world of GK!
@@zoidus6429 Oh my gosh, I never made the connection! That makes so much sense! Thank you!
One of the best games I've ever played....This scene busts out of nowhere after you've come this far in the game. Wonderful experience! Cheers! -X
Best scene of the game, really enjoyed watching this !
My 11 year old daughter is playing this right now....she said it was boring but....it's been 4 hours and she's still playing....hmmmmmm.
i still play the beast within, since its release.
its so awesome =D
Best game ever!
This game needs to be re-made using today's technology...the story alone makes it worth the price of the game, and if we could update the game with today's graphics and effects, I think it'd be huge.
this is one of th ebest scene frmo this episode.. also the music is awesome
One of the best games ever!
a masterpiece of a game.
One of my favorites from the 90's. I'm now playing it all the way through again with my family...we all play together on a laptop hooked up to the living room TV. LOVE THIS GAME.
The final puzzle after this scene was HARD AS HELL to do!
I watched my parents play through all of these games, and they, in general, are a lot of fun.
This game is a masterpiece!
This game was meticulously researched! Ludwig II was the "mad prince" of Bavaria who built many costly castles, including the "Walt Disney" castle. The church in the game where the miracles occur is for real, as are the zoo at Munich, etc.
Wow! Cool! ALL these years I've always wondered who were sitting beside Von Glower and that was you! You're gorgeous!
Check out my new album of piano versions of my game themes! asimplerefrain.com/
My favorite! Thank you so much for posting this!!!
I was awed by the song, horrified by the change, saddened by the fact that despite everything, Gabe turned into a werewolf, excited as Von Glower tried to get away, and laughed when I realized how apt it was that Gabe should turn into a wolf.
Remember too. That Gabriel wasn't even supposed to of been there on stage. The crystals and music was solely to transform Von Glower. If Gabriel HADN'T snuck out of the basement and transformed (howled), Von Glower would of remained his normal self. Only just though.
it is the story of the nieblung von wagner and it is about the transformation to an animal
There is now a better-than-nothing chance that we will see a fourth GK game.
You sure you want to be told?
After you've talked to Herr Doktor Klingmann, return to the farmhouse. Load the Klingmann tape into A, and a blank tape into B. Then do "Splice". Scroll through the tape, clicking on the words that make out the following message:
"Thomas? Herr Doktor Klingmann here. Show our wolves to Mr. Knight."
You'll get a new tape you can use on the radio in Klingmann's office when he's not there.
@Gelbsy very interesting, I never read the book! But then what caused Gabriel to turn into a wolf in the first place?
Id say the crystals DID have an impact on the whole scenario. Just look how they cut to the chandelier right before Gabriel transforms, then howls which makes von Glower transform. although I guess he can control the transformation until he is in the basement.
Still the whole concept of this Wagner opera and how it unfolds here is simply a masterpiece of a story to be told!
GK was so awesome. Tim Curry, Dean Erickson, so awesome.
Miss your work, Jane.
@ReadeRomke
That would be awesome. But there is one simple answer. Money!
The Tex Murphy series was also an incredible series. And the main character who also made the games said it was too expensive to make and not enough demand for it.
I love this part:D TY for Posting
Awesome. One of my favorite parts of the game.
This was actually one of scarier scene in the game in my opinion. The swirling camera work while Gabriel was transforming, and the costumes, great!

I am not able to understand!
It is still my wedding day!
The hunter, the hunter, he creeps around his prey!
It is just a joke, my lord!
I hope so. Capture the idiot!
Your wit is stumb like your sword's smith!
The hunter, the hunter, he creeps around his prey!

That is not funny, stop it at once!
(?)
8:56
Engelhart!
I beside myself!

The baron! The baron!
Let's slay the wolf!
LETS ALL TRY TO CREATE A MASTERPIECE LIKE THIS. I LIVED WITH ALL THeSE GOOD GAMES IN MY TEENS AND NOW THEY ARE GONE.
FOR GODS SAKE, LETS MAKE OUR OWN. I HATE TODAY'S SIMPLE STUPID GAMES.
@WhiskeyTester
Well you're in luck. Jane Jensen just released a new game called Gray Matter and I really get a Gabriel Knight vibe from it. Play it on the pc as the controls for the Xbox 360 are awe full.
@diablo888
If I remember correctly, in the book. Ludwig turned into a wolf where he was practicing/listening with Wagner with the music and crystals etc. I guess the effect it had on Ludwig was a carbon copy onto that of Gabriel.
If you see, Von Glower sits down and isn't as bad, not until Gabriel howls and obviously Glower transforms.
Die Nacht ist der Meister der finsteren Gründe ...
magical moment of the game
Guys, if you're interested in more of Jane Jensen, right now she needs your help with a new game she's planning! here: kickstarter(dot)com/projects/1005365109/jane-jensens-pinkerton-road-2012-2013-csg
There is a fourth GK-game in the make. Jane Jensen rocks and if i could have married her i would have, long ago.
btw, remember when making difficult games was considered a GOOD thing? now the industry wants everyone to buy everything so they make most of them as easy as possible.

Come!
Where is the music? Where is the entertainment?
Bring the singers!
The singers! The singers! It is a joy!
it's a shame he had to do the music in midi though. i wish they'd hire a real orchestra for this!
No problem. I completed the game long ago on DOSBOX. I also knew that I could install and play it on windows. I just couldn't get the subtitle patch to work on windows. Since English is not my native language subs were important.
HAHA...not bad....just wonder what the "Prophet of Bayreuth" would have thought of all this!!
BEAUTIFUL!!!!
2.54 - "Cuntttttttttttttt." Lol.
Well "Dumme Hurenfotze" is just is an alternative Term to "Schattenjäger"
Dumme = Shadow
Hurenfotze = Hunter
its just more contemporary
Guys, I was talking about hidden object games, not *real* adventure games like this one. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
GOG has it for $6. Buy it now and play it....without ever switching a single CD!
@Gelbsy
I have read that the the books came after the games and that some elements were changed. So maybe the book isn't exactly following the story in the game.
Amazing game without equal in its genre!
No, unfortunately I could not get the subtitle patch to work on windows, which is precisely the reason why I chose to play the game on DOSBOX.
oh my god!!!how did you understant that?
I guess you do speak English!
Stinks that games like this didn't keep evolving, and that more actors couldn't have had more opportunities to work in what should have been an amalgamation of games and movies.
According to the book, the crystals failed. It was only the fact that Gabriel turned into a wolf which caused Von Glower to transform. Is this the same as here in the game, or would Von Glower of changed regardless? There isn't any mention of the crystals failing in the game. Only that it "may not" work as the theatre was re-built.
@CarlosLeChacal - the translation is:

Moon, my bride, look at the moon!
The moon can not here you.
Only your husband can; I can give, what you need.
My husband!
And your guest need the beams of your smile, more than you the moon.
Husband!
@WhiskeyTester, I fully agree with you! Why can't they make a game like gabriel knight 2 (with movies in it) or a phantasmagoria 3?
Or "Here, find six items that have nothing to do with the barely-there plot in a giant pile of crap!"
Forgive me if I'm skeptical of your claim, I'm sure you can understand that it's hard to believe you without proof.
That was you?!
:O
I definitely see the merit in that, but consider... how many gamers would have sat through 15 minutes of REAL Wagnerian opera? Yes, it's more of a rock concert with an orchestra, but it's highly entertaining and great music, nevertheless. And games are all about entertainment after all...
please someone tell me what to do at the start of a game with the tapes!!!please help me!!i have stuck in this part!!please!!exactly when it says "splice" and "splice message" and want to write something!!please tell me what to do there!!
Its not laughable, it´s different... nevertheless it sounds beautiful
Better than the Final Fantasy 6 Opera!
Get Gray Matter....I thought it was quite allright!
I don't get that reference, but I'm sure you realize that's not what they say in the game.
lol
Can you also get the subtitle patch to work on windows?
Genuine apology, by the way, not a snarky one. :)
Yep haha
Is this song in German
This game is a bitch to set up on DOSBOX. Awesome though
So... is there any proof that this is NOT a real Wagner? :D
subbed homie be back on u got more goin on then my channel
i got the watch time just no subs ill fix audio chat so party comes in to talk as well just ya know dont say anything too horrible lol shadow out
Yes, but Phantasmagoria was actually not that good of a game... A pioneer, no doubt, but not that good.
