Recently, a friend completed a beautiful jigsaw puzzle, which he re-named "Silent Sonata." Featured, are a piano, a violin, a clarinet, some Chopin piano sheet music, but NO musicians! The scene is a Victorian living room, complete with mosaic lamp, key-wound clock, Oriental tea service, vase with flower arrangement, a middle-ages pastoral painting, a tapestry window blind, and a view out the window at a gas lamp, red bricked path, and marble fountain, all illuminated by a pink/red/orange sunset! 2,000 pieces. Level of difficulty: Extreme! Quite appropriate since the difficulty of the Sonatas MATCHES that required to complete the puzzle!
The last mvt of Chopin's 2nd sonata is truly one of his most amazing pieces----slow that down to .75 speed and listen to the changes in that. Just utterly incredible for 1837. Its a shame he wrote"Presto" on it, because it sounds a lot cooler slower---you can really hear all those clever harmonic movements.
I agree, This 1st Sonata is probably the best rendition at all, but still not such a masterwork as the 2nd and 3rd, But the 2nd Sonata of this recording is the best I ever heard.
I love Wolfram’s interpretations of Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn, in fact, I think he is the best, underrated pianist of our time. Yet in playing Chopin, it seems, he holds himself back, not allowing emotions to show up too much, making the most sensual parts sound quite undistinguished. Maybe I’m spoiled listening to the best interpreters of Chopin, with the best of all Arthur Rubinstein (in reference recordings). O, after listening to Wolfram a few times, I can say he is just different!
This pianist is very suited to these works and gave a stellar performance throughout. Thank you for introducing him here BC.
The sonata no. 1 is a gem!! Needs to be performed more often!!

Sonata 2 is the best in my opinion

30:43 Very imressive!
The first sonata sounds more like an Etude. I would never have guessed it was Chopin.
Chopin composed etudes? Sounds inimitable

👍 Have you ever heard Murray Perahia in Chopin's sonatas n.2 e n.3, Goldenweiser e Pletnev ?
ZA MOJU NAJDRAŽU KOSJENKU RANKO
Zu viel wilde Tempowechsel! Es ist im Grunde ein melancholisches Stück.
