Wow! 2 videos from Sri Lanka on this Saturday morning! I’m excited to watch both later this evening. Your India series is now officially over. You should be given an award for all that you filmed/ documented/created as a SOLO traveler during your time in India. 52 videos in about 6 weeks? Man, what an adventure it was! 👏👏👏👏👏
Sri Lanka was amazing but found tuk tuks costly with no negotiation of price unfortunately.. will never forget my trip. In my case at time had good job so did my own tour.. saw so much.. water was rough but had pools in hot rain! The tea areas were so vibant and green and sea blue green with so many historic sites and temples. I ve never compared with anywhere else as unique. A lovely place for tropical birds giant squirrels and elephants.
City limit tuk tuks are with the meters and apps available to book with fixed rates such as Pickme, Uber. Yes if you you flag down a taxi you can be overcharged.
Gabe - just want to say thank you for your recent videos on India and now Sri Lanka. They are both incredible looking places to visit and your videos inspire people to go out and see these spectacular parts of the world. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures. It’s very much appreciated!
Gabe, I am so excited for this Sri Lanka travel series! I know very little about Sri Lanka, but I am very interested in the culture and life there, and I want to learn more. I did wonder if it was similar to India, but it looks and sounds like it is indeed very different! Take good care Gabe, and see you next time. 😊
It is very different than India, lush green country with sunny sandy beaches , Except snow it has everything to offer in this small island.culture , history ,food ,climate, friendly people . one of the bio diversity hot spot in the world.
Another thing I noticed about Sri Lanka that was different from India is that Sri Lanka seems cleaner. It’s unfortunately very common to see littered garbage all over the place in India, but I’ve noticed that there’s just not as much in Sri Lanka
Its all about geography. If you compare with similar geographic states with similar population density i’d argue India is cleaner. Examples: Chandigarh, Gokarna, Most of Kerela, Indore
@@trueworld4224 yes but a ‘large’ population is relatively in our countries terms. For example 1.5 million people live in one/100s locality of my city. Edit: But I do agree our government needs to invest in social education for the underprivileged.
Hi Gabriel, a really nice change of pace from being in Mainland India it kind of feels like Bali and you're so close to it. I think you have many British ex-pats escaping the overcast rainy weather and cheaper cost of living. I'm sure this is what you think about from time to time after traveling so often where you would retire or live outside the United States. Many people are looking for lower cost-of-living options this is becoming more prevalent the cost in the U.S. is becoming more unaffordable for many Americans.
Sigiriya should be on your hit list… Adam’s peak.. up to Nuwara Eliya in the tee lands… and if you can make it to the bohdi tree Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi… great trip to get there…up in the north…. after galle not much down there other then tangalle and the National park…Kandy is cool for the tooth…Polonnaruwa Best for ancient archaeological wonders
The Emperor Ashoka, who ruled over northern Indian up until 232 BC, sent his children, Mahendra and Sanghamitra , to present day Sri Lanka to spread Buddhism. That is how Buddhism got introduced to the island. Actually much of the spread of Buddhism to countries in South East Asia can be attributed Buddhist kings in India working to spread the message of the Buddha to other lands. Buddhism is a strange case where, while it gained popularity in these new countries, it lost its foothold in the land where it originated.
It’s not that strange…look at Christianity. Is it big in the land in which it originated? (You could kind of make the case that it originated in Rome I suppose)
3:37 Why would you compare north of India to Sri Lanka? India is diverse. The only Indian states that are very similar to SL, are Kerala and parts of Goa.
Well it was a bit of a shock, but I refused (probably stupidly) to get rescued, as a bunch of Aussie surfers had gathered to watch me get rescued and as I was a kiwi, I simply refused to put my hand up and entertain them, also I knew if I swam sideways long enough I would get out of the rip, when I got back to the beach, I asked if they had any advice, and they said "Yeah, stay on the f**king beach", which I thought was pretty funny.
I did a scenic highland train ride back in 2020 and managed to get out of the country 3 days before Colombo airport closed due to the COVID-19 situation. Very lucky to fly back home then. Nice country. Lovely train rides. Just be careful of local small hospital staff showing booklets of events and asking for donations. I think I got scammed. I made a donation and later found out that the staff owned a very expensive bike.
Do you get lonely Gab? Have you ever had a companion with you on your travels. I’m single but would be so lonely without a home at least. Love watching your travels. You are very patient and easy going and accepting. Commendable!!
Thanks Gabriel for this vid. Ceylon is always going to be its name for English speakers, because that was it for hundreds of years going back through the British , Dutch and Portuguese periods. The last being British for a couple of hundred years. It is also mentioned in the holy Bible as Serendip and is where king Solomon of Israel obtained Gems for the decoration of the famous Temple in Jerusalem !! This island has not as many massive. Historic structures as in India though ! 😊😊😊
There are 8 UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, most of them historical. For an island the size of west Virginia or Ireland, that's quite a lot. There are other minor sites as well. The tallest structures in the ancient world outside of Egypt were in Anuradhapura (the first capital of Sri Lanka). Regarding the name, the British called it Ceylon, the Dutch called it Zeylan, the Portuguese called it Ceilao, all of which are a corruption of the word "Sinhale" (land of the Sinhalas). "Lanka" is more of a geographical term used for millennia. The kingdoms were always called the Sinhala kingdom or were named based on the capital.
Funny thing about the salon/saloon distinction is that I see upscale barbershops nowadays putting in beer fridges and espresso machines, just to confuse things even more!
Gabriel - I found the salon / saloon comment hilarious :-) . I have always known it but never thought of it so deeply. This happened because the Hindi speaking people pronounced the English word as 'Saloon' - and then spelled it back to Roman script the way they say it. Well, the British butchered a lot of words in Indian languages - so what if the Indians butchered a few of theirs too !! Since you are in Sri Lanka and will then go to Bangkok, you will notice that in both these countries, a lot of Sanskrit words are mispronounced and then misspelled. Or in case of Bangkok's airport - correctly spelled but mispronounced . I had a Thai colleague that I always pulled the leg of telling him that the Thai people do not know how to pronounce the name of their own airport right !!! ( no worries - it was all in fun - no one took any offense )

A new type of tarantula about the size of your face has been found in northern Sri Lanka. Scientists found the spiders -- with leg spans stretching from 6 to 8 inches across -- living in trees and the old doctor's quarters of a hospital in Mankulam.2 apr 2013
Luckily the cane spiders aren't nearly that big and they're completely harmless. I found one inside my tent while camping in Hawaii, which was definitely a little freaky.
Speaking of Turtle Beach, it is a tiny spot, 1-minute walk from where you got on the beach. It's a super cool place as you can see the big sea turtles there. I was there a month ago. After 10+ years of travel, this was the first time I see them just like that, on the beach. I have a video from that place ua-cam.com/video/-Iqav9iPX-A/v-deo.htmlsi=hN3fjyvHMPq1ueMZ

Indian carries are also light and watery when made at home in restaurants they make thicker and Richer curry. but Indians eat very less at outside. for beef you need to visit the Muslim majority areas in India. but in Kerala beef is everywhere.
Nice! A lot of people hire a rickshaw for a week or so. Nice way to see the island eh? Get on the cheese parotta & some spicy hoppers dude. A visit to Pakistan would complete your pre-partition India states…jus sayin 😉
Sri Lanka gained independence from the British the same year as India, 1948. It's definitely a goal to explore all of South Asia. Now I need to visit Pakistan as well as Bhutan.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos British India got independence in 1947 (which eventually became India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh), a whole year earlier than Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Burma (Myanmar). Nepal and Bhutan were independent kindoms which weren't under colonization.
sinhala language was influenced by Pāli, the sacred language of the Sri Lankan Buddhists, and to a lesser degree by Sanskrit, mother of most Indian languages. It has borrowed a considerable number of words from the Dravidian languages, mostly from Tamil, which is also spoken in Sri Lanka. even Buddhism was born in India. Sri Lankan food as so much similarity to South Indian food.

why people always say that beef is not available in India. India is one of the biggest exporter of beef on earth. way more beef can be found in India than pork. but no one says pork is not available in India. 230 million Muslim and 40 million Christians live in India. for them beef is main food.
I've spent more than two years traveling in India and I've never seen beef available in a restaurant. Maybe it's available somewhere but hard to find apparently.

Indian carries are also light and watery when made at home in restaurants they make thicker and Richer curry. but Indians eat very less at outside. for beef you need to visit the Muslim majority areas in India. but in Kerala beef is everywhere.
is this your first time in srilanka?
Yes.

UA-camr Steve Yalo has been living there a while now
I posted a comment on his latest video seeing if he was around, he left last month.
So annoying when you can't just take a straight path because the sidewalks obstructed by objects or there's no sidewalk
Nice! A lot of people hire a rickshaw for a week or so. Nice way to see the island eh? Get on the cheese parotta & some spicy hoppers dude. A visit to Pakistan would complete your pre-partition India states…jus sayin 😉
Sri Lanka has nothing to do with pre-partition India though. 🙄
@@PckLyA That's right, India was 1947.
Looks cleaner than India.

Yep. ✌️

Sri Lanka was part of ancient Indian civilization.
Nope
Never.. Don't spread lies 🥱
@@edwardgraham3475what's the lie? Sri Lanka's original settlers were from India.
sinhala language was influenced by Pāli, the sacred language of the Sri Lankan Buddhists, and to a lesser degree by Sanskrit, mother of most Indian languages. It has borrowed a considerable number of words from the Dravidian languages, mostly from Tamil, which is also spoken in Sri Lanka. even Buddhism was born in India. Sri Lankan food as so much similarity to South Indian food.
@@subidh2949 the original indeginious language of SL is not Sinhala. It is vadda language. Its still spoken by tge indeginious ppl of SL

Oh Gabriel, The Noise Disturbing! Is India is more Cleaner!
why people always say that beef is not available in India.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos in Muslim and Christian majority areas in India beef is available.
Okay, but you aren't going to find it in most places in India.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos in future if you visit my city Kolkata there are dozens of restaurants selling beef.
