Thank you Gabriel for showing us the beach scene. Sri Lanka has been on my list of the 10 countries I most want visit for 4 years now. Next year I hope it happens.
That's one hell of an included breakfast (I'm not kidding compared to American hotel grab and go stuff). Thanks for this series, Gabe. I've always wanted to live over there and most of the Sri Lanka videos online are too flashy and not personal like yours. Authenticity is hard to find online these days, keep it up. Been watching you for years.

Hi Gabriel, Sri Lanka has a Caribbean feel to it balmy weather beautiful, lush green areas incredible rock formations Sigiriya the Ancient Rock Fortress also the Golden Temple of Dambulla. It should be interesting there are times that your impression is priceless when you come across something that even you are surprised by the sheer beauty of it. There is probably no experience as experiencing something for the first time such anticipation never gets old.
5:40 Hikkaduwa and the rest of southwest Sri Lanka has a tropical rainforest climate. Thatʻs why itʻs always rainy on and off with no clear dry season or monsoon season.
If you want to see the history in this country, then you can take a chance to visit Sigiriya rock fortress and mainly, I recommend you to visit the Anuradhapura ancient city, which composed of vast networks of ancient temples along with monasteries and it was the major human settlement in that region and believed to be the longest serving ancient capital of Sri Lanka, located around 205 kilometers from the current capital Colombo. Also there is an another important historical city in Polonnaruwa, built by the ancient Chola dynasty.
Polonnaruwa was built by Parakramabahu the Great and destroyed by Cholas, who did the same wherever they landed. BTW, King Parakramabahu was also from Mourya clan and supposed to have got involved in unnecessary wars in South india, Thailand, Cambodia etc. only thing his generals had been tamil and his maternal grandfather also had been of South Indian lineage.
Hi Gabriel. Sometimes you catch a moment perfectly. The video and music just work to bring home the feel of what you're experiencing in real time. Your final scene in the tuk tuk really did this for me today. Thanks
It will be interesting to see Sri Lanka from your view. I had two weeks there in October after my trip to Kerala. I did not want to just fly over the country and not stop. I wished I had planned on staying longer. A very interesting country.
Hi Gabe! Welcome to Sri Lanka! Just thought of mentioning the food you had for breakfast.. Thin noodles - String hoppers Powder - Coconut sambol / Pol sambol Potato - potato curry made with coconut milk and turmeric I have been following your adventures around the world for quite some time now. Keep up the good work. Enjoy Sri lanka! 😊
Other iconic food u must try while ur there: Egg hoppers Traditional rice and curry Chicken koththu Curd with treacle Visit a bakery and enjoy some sri lankan "short eats" 😊
Interesting brotherman, looks more like Thailand than India. Looking forward to some nitty and gritty scenes to really get a taste of what the cultural layers unravel. That touristy area seems a bit higher price for Asia.
Gab , you will have the best time in SL. Feel free to interact with the locals and they will love you back ! You will not. Want to leave, I will guarantee that. I was born and grew up there. Now feeling regrets having left for greener pastures. There is truth in the proverb that says “ you never appreciate what you’ve got , until you loose it “
It gave me the same feeling in 1996 when I first went to India. Different. Oh wow how nostaglic to see Hikkaduwa of today. I was lucky in 1996. I passed the entrance of the central bank in Colombo only 10-15 minutes before the huge bomb went off. I went up from Hikkaduwa to get my air ticket to Trivandrum in India soi I was only i Colombo for an hour. That was intense and it turned out to be the worst attack by the Tamil tigers in the whole of the civil war during the 90's.
Surprised its your first time with all the India trips you've made. Was almost sure I would have seen you at the tuk tuk tournament haha. Wish you the best on your trip and as always, cheers.
Gabriel, Very glad you have gone to Sri Lanka . I have seen another travel vlogger go there a bit , a long time again , and I am very glad to see you there . Looking forward to your journey . Haven’t seen anyone there since the pandemic. I think it was pretty much locked down . I know you will do a great job as always .
Like others have said, as someone who likes ancient historical sites, you need to visit Anuradhapura (plus Mihintale), Sigiriya, and Polonnaruwa, which are all in the central area. There are many other less visited areas of ruins too. The South coast where you are in now doesn't have much in terms of historical sites.
Hey there. Sri Lankan living in Atlanta GA. It's nice to see Hikkaduwa again even by way of video. It used to be an old haunt of mine through my 20s. The noodle dish you referred to is called Indi-Aappa (in English, string hoppers), the potato is Ala-hodi, and the powdery stuffy (not giving me a lot to go on here haha) was probably pol-sambol. There's so much more cuisine, and if you enjoyed that you're going to enjoy the rest of your stay. If you are ever in the mood for a midnight snack (or any other meal really) and are still in Hikkaduwa, go visit the Roti shop on the main road (next to Royal Beach hotel). They do savory and sweet rotis like nothing else
I was there around the millennium for four times. Beautiful island but would never stay in Hikkaduwa unless I wanted to surf. Mirissa and Unawatuna were the nice beaches on the west coast but east coast was much better. Loved the mountains in the heart of the island and Sygeria, the famous rock. I think I will never go back, too much has changed.
Gabriel, visit the OLD Mt Lavinia hotel. It's where the science fiction author Arthur Clarke lived in his latter years ( so I was told). I look forward to seeing Sri Lanka again through your videos.
Sri Lankan food is definitely great from what I have heard. Do you think the noodles and soup you tasted had coconuts? I would guess yes depending on what little I know.. Also as you move to the northern parts, you will begin seeing the language changing to Tamil, with a lot more of shared culture with Tamil Nadu- with its the colourful temples, religion etc.
And for onward flights. Buy a refundable ticket and cancel after you arrive. I use full laminated passport picture ( first page and signature page ,folded over ,glued and laminated)and usually they accept that instead of an actual passport.
Sri Lanka is different from India in every way. The culture, religion, hospitality, architecture, peace and unity between multicultural religions, food, ethnicities, attitudes of the people, everything. It’s a very underrated country. The main reason for this is that travelers who visit India, regardless of their experience, assume Sri Lanka is similar and then decide to skip it. Unfortunately, that’s what the media spreads, but it's totally false. Sri Lanka is an independent country, unique in every possible way.
What you ate at the hotel near the airport is called " string hopper" made from rice flour the powdery thing is "pol sambol" meaning coconut sambol made from grated coconut mixed with chilli and onions the yellow gravy with potatoes is "kiri hodi" kiri means milk and in this case coconut milk with spices and potatoes. Also try "hoppers" a bit like an unfolded pancake. Sri Lankan hotel and food costs will be higher than India and its not because of inflation but imports most goods. There are two seasons North East monsoon from October to April and South West monsoon from July till September. January is the best time for beach going as very few rains or none at all. Two different climatic areas called dry zone and wet zone. Hikkaduwa a very touristic place for decades ia in wet zone as Colombo itself. A popular hippie destination in 60s 70s. Galle has more sights to see, historic and Unawatuna beach, Matara also with a Dutch fort and old mosque. Weligama a good surfer paradise. When in Galle check hotels in Upper Dickmon road like Sun House, Lady hill with good view. Kandy, Ella, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee are cities recommended as well as Nuwera Eliya.
@@GabrielTravelerVideos city of Kataragama, gama means village. Kataragama there is a congregation of gods. You might be interested. Two roads in south the highway and the old coastal road. Coastal road more colourful.
Looking forward to more footage from this very interesting place. To be honest, almost all I know about this country is from the videos of another famous UA-camr who has been there multible times, including a few months during the beginning of the pandemic where they had strict temporary lockdowns. (Whether you like Harald Baldr or not, many of his videos are outstanding)
Glad you’re in Sri Lanka, Gabe, but you’ll love Gujarat when you next come back to India. We just visited this completely secret-society-like Calico Museum here in Ahmedabad where you won’t unfortunately be able to film (they confiscate all phones on entry, if you are one of the lucky 21 allowed in each day, and then wand you to make sure you’re not trying to smuggle in a camera). Astonishing collection with an eccentric guide.

Hi Gabriel, the food the lady gave you is not noodles, it's a traditional Sri Lankan food called idiyappam (string hoppers - in English) and the broth is called sothi. If you go to any place in Sri Lanka for breakfast or dinner, they will have this. And also, please try kothu roti at dinnertime. A very popular food in Sri Lanka. Please go to Jaffna, Trincomale. Thank you, enjoy my country!
when Sri Lanka economy was in danger and no one on earth was helping India helped with grants and loans of several billion dollars and still giving. Indian Foreign Minister himself went to Sri Lanka with massive petrol tankers. On July 08, 2023, expressing his gratitude to "trustworthy friend" India for saving Sri Lanka and preventing "another bloodbath for all of us" during its unprecedented economic crisis last year, Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has said that not a single nation has extended that kind of assistance to Colombo as done by New Delhi.

Wow, the beach looks beautiful! I wonder if MSG is common in the cooking there. I remember eating some food in Malaysia and Thailand that looked pretty plain and ended tasting fabulous. Then we found out that they sometimes added a ton of MSG.
No msg. They use whole spices and less ground spices. Don't really use yogurt like India. My wife who's Dutch started cooking Sri Lankan food at home after visiting. It is really good but spicy!!!
@@GabrielTravelerVideos yeah, I highly doubt they use it. I have make SL food myself and it's just a ton of different spices. Try the beef curry, deviled shrimp. The power you mentioned, if it was orange is coconut sambal (pol sambal is what the locals call it). It's made with freshly shredded coconut, chillies, lime and sometimes bits of dried fish. Noodles aren't a big thing unless you are having string hoppers (the white or red round stringy patty)) made from rice flour). It's more of a rice based cuisine. Also try hoppers for breakfast, pitthu for lunch and thier "short eats" : fish cutlets, rolls and patties are awesome. If you go to the capital, there is an incredible buffet that the locals love. It have an unbelievable variety of food. It's outdoors so pick a nice day. It's in the Cinnamon Grand hotel. Bit pricey for SL but worth the experience in the old village setting and live local music
Went to Sri Lanka a long time ago, 1995 I believe. I much prefer India as a traveller to Sri Lanka. It felt quite a bit more touristy than India. Sri Lanka is not a bad destination however.
It feels touristy because, it is touristy. Sri Lankan economy relies heavily on tourism, we don't have a huge industrial economy, unlike India where they rely heavily on industries.
Hinduism and Buddhism are brothers. Both are non religions, have common origins in the culture of Ancient India. Buddhism arose in the eastern Ganges culture of northern India around 500 BCE. Hinduism is basically the yogic culture. Both have many shared practices. in both people wear Saffron clothes, say namaste, Chant OM(AUM). buddhist and hindu monks used to live in india and share same common language - sanskrit and both go hand in hand with each other and they do samadhi which buddhist too do. hindu and buddhist monk used to sit and learn together in one of world’s oldest and then largest university nalanda university. gautama buddha is considered as 9th avatar or reincarnation of lord vishnu in Hinduism. in India many temples with Hindu deities and Lord Buddha worshipped together. in Nepal people worship Hindu gods and Buddha together.
But Lord Buddha said women are equal to men as in their rights . No one become a noble by birth but only through his deeds . Avoid killing in any living being as you love your life others also love their life.
Buddhism is a way of life. Learnt scholars know it. There is no caste discrimination and not many beliefs that are very contradictory to science. Buddhism has archeological proof of their history.
Cool & relaxing beach. Change of scenery. Thanks for taking us to Sri Lanka. I'd visited long ago. But One can't compare USA with Cuba or Dominican. Similarly India with Sri Lanka or other small neighbors. Bordering regions are almost similar. People, food & even landscapes. If one visits Sri Lanka from Kerala or Tamil Nadu, one can't find any difference.
What you had for breakfast was string hoppers with potato curry, very popular among Sir lankans for breakfast, also ask for coconut sambal to go with that , and mix it all up together, but don’t add too much of coconut sambal

Gabriel, you are absolutely spot on 'salon' and 'saloon'. Even in malaysia I do laugh when I see the word saloon. Pure ignorance of the meaning on the part of the signage maker. The owners of the salon may not know the true correct meaning.
I think the "hello" greeting you were trying to learn was one of the more formal ways of saying it and no one is using that. Instead you can say "kohomada" meaning "how are you?"
Actually Sri Lanka and India are deeply connected to each other and not very different to each other. Sinhalese language is an Indo-Aryan language which is in stark contrast to the neighbouring Dravidian speaking people in the region(Southern subcontinent). This is because Sinhala language was brought by immigrants from Indian states of Orissa and Bengal during the rule of ancient king Ashoka. It's believed these immigrants also spread Budhhism in the island(Ashoka was the greatest patron of Budhhism). Then you have the rule of Cholas, a South Indian Hindu dynasty, which continued for centuries. Today the descendant of the dynasty are the SriLankan Tamils who occupy the northern portions of the island. Then during British rule, Indian Tamils(distinct from Srilankan Tamils) were brought to the island. So in short Sri Lanka is very closely associated with India and share deep history especially with South and East India
Sinhala language was not originated in India. 25 000 years old human skeleton has found in Sri lanka. History says several waves of migrations fron Northwest and Northeast of India. There were several South Indian invasions and capturing parts of Lanka for a short period of time. Sri lanka was underDutch, Portuguese & British since 1505 till1948.
@@kumarimapa7595 Sinhala is an Indo-European language. How can it originate in SL ? Sinhala bears lexical similarities with Bengali and Prakrit(language of Budhha).
@@kumarimapa7595 Indo European languages all originated from Proto-Indo-European somewhere in between Ukraine and Kazakhstan. How can Sinhala, an Indo-Aryan language originate solely in SL? It must reach SL through some route right? That route is India.... Instead of arguing, why don't you make Google searches. Sinhala originated from Prakrit, the language of Budhha. Singala is not an indegenous language of SL...it came with immigrants. Vedda is the original language of SL
What you had at the hotel should be 'idi aappa' in sinhala and is called as string hoppers in English. you got that with a potato curry with alot of gravy and a coconut samnbol

SO first 6 months is best for south and west beach tourism while other half final months is good for east and north beach tourism, but this year its almost 5 months we get rain everyday like crazy,in west and south bruh,
yes its a mess due to global warming , and not like before now bay of bengal make more and more cyclones more frequently ,,, I m okay if it rains for years and years, but Im afraid in future if we had a drought this long, rain is better than drought ,I hate droughts, if a drought came I feel sad for elephants in sri lanka@@GabrielTravelerVideos

Thanks
Agree with you 100%. I hope Gabriel does more of this.
Thin noodles - String hoppers
Powder - Coconut sambol / Pol sambol
Potato - potato curry made with coconut milk and turmeric
I have been following your adventures around the world for quite some time now. Keep up the good work. Enjoy Sri lanka! 😊
Other iconic food u must try while ur there:
Egg hoppers
Traditional rice and curry
Chicken koththu
Curd with treacle
Visit a bakery and enjoy some sri lankan "short eats" 😊
Great, good to know. ✌️
Interesting brotherman, looks more like Thailand than India. Looking forward to some nitty and gritty scenes to really get a taste of what the cultural layers unravel. That touristy area seems a bit higher price for Asia.
Hi. Definately more like Thailand.😊
Hello, a real surprise as it is so different than expected also.@@jenniferrosebruce6385

Sri Lanka looks pretty nice
Gab , you will have the best time in SL. Feel free to interact with the locals and they will love you back ! You will not. Want to leave, I will guarantee that. I was born and grew up there. Now feeling regrets having left for greener pastures. There is truth in the proverb that says “ you never appreciate what you’ve got , until you loose it “
*WOW* MAGICAL tuktuk ride Gabriel. And really beautiful opening. Your recent editing has been amazing.
Great, glad to hear it.
Wow, crazy, sounds like you really lucked out.
Now, Sri Lanka is much better than in war situation. War ended here in 2009.
@@DiracRestricted Of course I understand that it is better without war? What is your point?
Surprised its your first time with all the India trips you've made. Was almost sure I would have seen you at the tuk tuk tournament haha. Wish you the best on your trip and as always, cheers.
Beautiful!! Wow! Another wonderful journey with Gabriel! 😊
Very cool! Now I want to go to Sri Lanka.
Yea go ,do you have money 💰?
@@AdamAdam-zg8jl it's cheap. That's why many russians going to live there
Like others have said, as someone who likes ancient historical sites, you need to visit Anuradhapura (plus Mihintale), Sigiriya, and Polonnaruwa, which are all in the central area.
So pumped to see you in Sri Lanka
Finally you got out of India. Now it will be interesting to watch your videos again.
The easiest way to pronounce the greeting and remember it is to say: Are You Bow One
Good to know. 👍
Never been here, but it's been on my list for a while. Really looking forward to these vids!
What you had would be string hoppers, with potato curry and coconut symbol.
That intro song slaps!!! Thanks for introducing me to it.
Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!
I love your content
Thanks for the info.

(Whether you like Harald Baldr or not, many of his videos are outstanding)
Glad you made it there...lookin forward to seeing more
Glad you’re in Sri Lanka, Gabe, but you’ll love Gujarat when you next come back to India.
Now thay sounds cool 😮

Hi Gabriel, the food the lady gave you is not noodles, it's a traditional Sri Lankan food called idiyappam (string hoppers - in English) and the broth is called sothi. If you go to any place in Sri Lanka for breakfast or dinner, they will have this. And also, please try kothu roti at dinnertime. A very popular food in Sri Lanka. Please go to Jaffna, Trincomale. In terms of cleanliness, it is way better than India. Also, Sri Lanka has a lot to offer.
Nice video. Thank you for making it about Sri Lanka.
when Sri Lanka economy was in danger and no one on earth was helping India helped with grants and loans of several billion dollars and still giving.
Interesting, however I wasn't expecting a long political comment here.

simply we sri lankans dont care. what you endians expect from this kinda comment in almost every sri lankan video? do you want a praise?
do u know that endia really didnt helped lanka, giving a 4B loan is not a help at all, do u know what were the conditions of that loan, endia asked for a lankan island to take ,and now lankans must buy from endian farmers and their low qu@lity f00d, wow what a help, lanka had to cut down almost more than half of imports from xina bcz of a loan and finally endia also get a 450m u$d interest with that loan, that is not help, thats called business and being 0p0rtun!$tic , So no pr@!$e for endia

@@thegrandtourist sounds delicious
I generally have a bad reaction to MSG. Didn't notice anything. Hopefully they don't use it.

No more like hinduism is father and bhuddism is son
But Lord Buddha said women are equal to men as in their rights . No one become a noble by birth but only through his deeds . Avoid killing in any living being as you love your life others also love their life.
Buddhism is a way of life. Learnt scholars know it. There is no caste discrimination and not many beliefs that are very contradictory to science. Buddhism has archeological proof of their history.

Vedda is the original language of SL

we have proper monsoon season in sri lanka, I really dont remember the month, but everyyear , 3 of first 6 months is raining for eastern and northern parts of sri lanka while western and southern parts are shining and sunny, thats called NORTH EASTERN MONSOON
then 3 months of last 6 months of year , western and southern sri lanka is raining while north and east shining brightly, Thats call as SOUTH WEST MONSOON,
never south west monsoon go to east or north OR north eastern monsoon go to south and west , bcz of the mountain range in CENTRAL SRI LANKA which blocks each wind waves crossing each other side .
SO first 6 months is best for south and west beach tourism while other half final months is good for east and north beach tourism,
but this year its almost 5 months we get rain everyday like crazy,in west and south bruh,
Alrighty then. Still not sure when to go where but no biggie.✌️
yes its a mess due to global warming , and not like before now bay of bengal make more and more cyclones more frequently ,,, I m okay if it rains for years and years, but Im afraid in future if we had a drought this long, rain is better than drought ,I hate droughts, if a drought came I feel sad for elephants in sri lanka@@GabrielTravelerVideos
