Hopkinson Smith, Renaissance Lute - Conservatorio Vivaldi di Alessandria, 4 ottobre 2021
When a man brings such passion and proficiency to bear, such a simple display becomes immensely captivating.
Hopkinson Smith is certainly one of the best lutenists in the world and also one of the best teachers of this instrument.
I wish I could take a class with Hopkinson Smith, idk if I'll ever have the opportunity
i have been a fan of Smith's since 1976/
Such a beautiful gritty sound - he really makes these pieces his own. The little "imperfections" are super artistic. Truly mind-blowing.
Every piece has Hoppy's signature on it. So many poetic moments! And the gutty sound of the lute with it's 4th course octave is authentic and magical.
How good is Calata ala Spagnola here!... fantastic!
The Master! Wonderful to see and hear him play! Thanks.
Simply starlight, pure magic.
11:58 O my goodness how sweet
Awesome music, interpretation, sound, musician and person.
I have never heard so much improvisation and composition in so many lute pieces. A singular artist!
Siempre perfecto y virtuoso el Laúd con Hopkinson Smith, es insuperable...
In the quiet corner, merriment of music he plays.
Feeling superimposed in the time of the instrument,
In the far distance, yet, so close, am very happy to
find him play just as I have adored from his discs.
In the quiet corner he plays, 'tis true
However no logic stands in front of him
Excited people like to clap, no argue
If I could murder some, 'd I be so grim?
@@amorise957 appreciate your view, logic shouldn't
be a member of music, I think. It gives us just love,
and that love has long captured me from his play.
Grim belongs to poet work. Pls take it easy.
The performance is just WOW. The mic placement is also masterful. The resonance of the lute is equally surprising.
作为一个中国人,从来没有见过这个乐器,但是这个旋律和演奏实在太美好了...已经陶醉在琴弦的波动中了...
Wow wow! Excellent playing. Love the sounds of it.
deep and joyous, the essence is instantly brought out
Grazie!
Grazie Edoardo! un gioiellino! una Chicca! What e Jewel!
Thank you for this rare musical history learning from the passionate maestro
Thank you for sharing music from this master musician.
This makes me want to go to cold and snowy Winterhold and drink my mead looking at the fire and the beautiful lass sitting alone across, that used to be an adventurer but you know the rest.
Calata alla Spagnola ditto terzetti was awesome!! I mean the whole thing was superb but especially that one!!
Grande musicista che Hopkinson!
El maestro de maestros. Formidable como siempre
Thank you for sharing. What a beautiful instrument, if I could get it in tune for a damn full song. I am considering throwing mine out of the window.
@Tom McArdle Short of ready made pastes, it's often recommended to use French chalk, or bar soap, depending on the problem. Should only need to be done whenever you change strings.
@Tom McArdle Thank you for your kind advice, sir! Yes, I have tried peg paste. The worst problem with this inexpensive lute is the impossibility of bringing the chanterelle to pitch. Regardless of the string gauge, it will only go as high as E. Whenever I try to tune the whole instrument to G (as it was originally when I bought it, mind you) the string breaks. The others remained sound and in pitch. It is the chanterelle which forces me to keep the entire instrument tuned down to E. It is a challenge to keep motivated when an instrument does not respond. Keep well and all the best for 2022!
@@DeOmnibusDubitandum76 Make sure you have the right gauge for the string length. If this obvious issue is not the problem, then if the break is happening near the nut or bridge, these should be checked for sharp edges. The nut is often the culprit and is best attended to by a luthier.
Una joya.gracias!!
@@DeOmnibusDubitandum76 the problem is very likely a sharp edge at the bridge or nut cutting the string. I had the same problem, which can be fixed easily.
Sempre estremamente pulito🙏🏽
Adoro questo strumento. Bravissimo. Suona divinamente.
11:58 great
Grandissimo Hoppy!
HP is one of the great masters of the lute - thanks for the vid Edoardo!!!
Grazie per queste belle interpretazioni 👍
Very enjoyable, thank you
Obrigado pelo vídeo, grande maestro belíssima interpretação técnica impecável refinada bravíssimo de Manaus Amazonas Brasil.
🇧🇷💚
Espectacularrrr!
Muy hermoso recital.
Gracias!
Muchas gracias por compartir.
Sweet! A very talented man!
Extraordinary!
Bravo!
Playing a lute to think about. And I'm not just being medieval. 😅I love ❤️ thy greensleves
Siempre son magistrales las interpretaciones de Hopkinson Smith.
Always a treat to hear and see the classic six course lute played so well. Interesting to realise though that some of this music was composed by lutenists who remembered that the lute was still played with a plectrum when they were kids.
Excellent perfection.
Magnífico
Lute a wonderful arabic instrument with a competent musician gave a beautiful melodies.
7 dislikes, how can you dislike an artist like Hopkinson Smith? Thus those 7 separate themselfs as complete idiots who do know nothing of music... Bravo maestro, your music is top!
How presumptuous of you to require that everyone appreciate the things you do lest they be classed as Philistines. So, YOU are the arbiter of soul, taste and class?
You don’t know why they “disliked” . Can’t you just enjoy what pleases you without condemning those who don’t share your feelings?
Una maravilla
Still such a deft and delicate touch
مثير للإهتمام
Excelência de musica, isso me faz lembrar a nostalgia daquela época na renascença.
Quem viveu sabe...
Caramba... to ficando velho.
Lindo!
Merci Maître
he good at that
That Steinway looks pretty nice, maybe have Andras Schiff and Maria Joao Pires come play it
Via muziko estas bela!
fenomenale da tutti i punti di vista. ....ma come mai suona accordato a 415?
👏👏👏👏👏
if you're under twenty years old, there's only two kinds of music: music from after the financial collapse, and this
11-string lute… Interesting. (Mine has 15 strings in 8 courses.)
It has a somewhat more mandolin-like sound than I’m used to, but it’s all good!
What kind of parents name their kid “Hopkinson”?
Good to see he survived that and became first-rate musician.
Mr. Hopkin named his son son of Hopkins: thus, Hopkinson?Maybe??
@@johnkulus7812 Presumably, with so many Smiths about, Hopkinson might be unique.
But I was only kidding anyway.
@@grahamnichols1416 You are a man of the world, sir.
His friends call him
Hop.
I hope 🤔
Well, the Ford family named their son "Harrison"...😉
The longer I listen to the lute it reminds of the West African kora and some of the melodic lines sounds the same as the west African kora music
Noice
IDK why I thought he'd be playing two different lutes.
I think holding a lute is a struggle.
Anti-depressant :)
Proof that even a broken guitar is still useful. lol
Норм дед играет

Thank you mr Smith for your work and love for the guitar and luit music!
