The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

A Greek Goddess with style, Beautiful 👌
Class and talent in the 60’s. Sadly it’s gone.
I know what you mean... however, this song is from a movie, where the lady singing this song... plays a Greek hooker.
No it’s not, you’re not looking hard enough.
@@SwingingCreeperThe fact that you have to look really hard for it these days speaks volumes for the lack of it.
@MarkStevens8899 you don't have to look hard at all. If you look too hard, you squint your eyes, and you'll miss everythinf.
This is an excerpt from a segment in which Melina performed a medley of songs and scenes from the Broadway musical, "Illya Darling" which had opened earlier in the month. The musical was an adaptation of the movie "Never on Sunday" which also starred Melina.
I didn't know who she was. At least I know something about her. This is where a brief synopsis would be nice. Thankful we have Tom to give us some information.
Have a Peaceful evening. 🕊
Thank you for sharing! 💖
@@that70sgirl90 You're welcome! It's always good to hear from you! I don't know much about Melina but I know that Illya was her most famous role. I also know that she plays a prostitute in the movie and play which was quite controversial at the time. The Chordettes recorded "Never on Sunday" and it became a big record for them; their last big one on the charts back in 1961.
@TomElvisSmith At least you could tell us something. 😊
Thank you! 💖
@@that70sgirl90She was a famous and successful Greek actress and singer. She made some Hollywood and English-speaking movies as well, since her husband was a film director originally from America. She was wonderful!!(I may be biased being of Greek descent though 😄). 🇬🇷🌞💝🥰
And to complete her bio, it can be said that in addition to being an actress and singer, she was also a political activist, persecuted during the Dictatorship of the colonels from the late 60s to the mid-70s in Greece (she went into exile for that reason). And later, for two terms between the 80s and 90s, she was Minister of Culture of her country.
She was FAAAAAABULOUS ❗
As a sixty - something, I miss the days of wonderful, ACTUAL talent. "OPA!"😊❤
Totally agree!!👏💯Opa!!!🇬🇷💝
Phenomenal voice... I wish we could have seen the whole thing! 😔
Happy Monday... thank you for sharing! 💖
I agree. Just over a minute is not enough.

They were all having a blast, ahhh, the good ol days!
I've watched a number of old Ed Sullivan Shows. What doesn't get old is what a great show it was, and all the really talented people he had on it.
This show was panned by the critics but loved by the common folk. I think it was the subject matter and the lack of the plot that killed it..Apparently, on a Wednesday matinee day, it was Fleet Week in the NYC and the audience was full of Navy soldiers. When Melina came out in her bikini the soldiers stood up and started hooting and hollering and tossed their hats on the stage. They had to stop the show for 10 minutes to clear the stage and get the audience back in their seat. Melina was 47 at the time and must have loved every second of the outburst and considered it one of her finest performances.
Nice performance 👏. Thank you for sharing it. God Bless You and stay safe
What a beautiful, talented and glamorous lady. I was raised speaking Greek, and I've never forgotten it. Never on Sunday was such a great song. A video I recently discovered was Sha Na Na covering it. I laughed till I cried.
I just now cry.😢😢😢😢❤❤❤
Lovely Lady, of Greek Heritage
My Mom bought the soundtrack album to Never on Sunday in 1963. It is still one of my favorite albums of all time.
so sad it is too short. But thanks a lot for the gift !
A world star from Greece, who also joined the struggle against the infamous ‘Colonels’ Regime’, which ruled the country from 1967 to 1974.
I found it interesting at the time to find out she was such a political activist. I never paid much attention to entertainers, but I must have paid attention to all publicity about her since I was so intrigued with the movie.
🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
`Never on Sunday` (original Greek title Τα Παιδιά του Πειραιά, The Children of Piraeus) is written by Manos Hatzidakis for the movie, directed by Jules Dassin. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1960 (via wikipedia)
Check out Nana Mouskouri’s and Dalida’s wonderful versions of this song- “Never on a Sunday/Children of Piraeus” as well! Manos Hadjidakis, musical composer of this song, was a great and very talented Greek composer!!!👏💗🇬🇷💕
Bella por siempre ❤
Let's hear it for the Greeks! (Of which I am one) 😀 👍
Yes!! I am too!! 👏🇬🇷💕
Hear that!!!!!💙
The Last Greek Goddess.
😊❤❤❤❤❤
Only problem with this is how brief it is…
This brings out the Greek in everybody!
I love this song by Connie Francis. Will have to look Melina up. Never heard of her. A very nice voice.
She is the original singer of the Greek song, “Never on Sunday(English title) and the Greek song title was “The Children of Piraeus.” Melina was a famous and successful Greek actress and singer. Connie’s version of the song (mostly in English with some Greek words)is actually pretty good though.
Also, I forgot to mention that the wonderful singer, Dalida, sings a very nice version of this song as well. I only discovered her four or five years ago. She was born to Italian parents in Egypt, where she grew up. Dalida sang in many different languages. Quite the talent as well.
My last message - also, check out the great, Greek international singer, Nana Mouskouri’s version of “Never on Sunday/Children of Piraeus.” I have never heard Nana sing poorly on anything!!!💗🇬🇷👏
I am not familiar with any of her music, but I have seen her name mentioned several times in articles about the best singers ever. I only remember The Chordettes version of the song. Aside, I note that she is still alive.
Rest in Peace my dear Melina, we love you
ΜΕΓΑΛΗ ΜΕΛΙΝΑ 💙🇬🇷✊️
Cuantas personas y acciones valiosas en el mundo. Y uno no se entera.
Never On a Sunday was one of my two favorite songs on the radio when i was 5. The other was Alley Cat. I sang along with Never On a Sunday, but i didn't know it was from the perspective of a prostitute! 😂
If you can, you should try to find a way to watch the movie.
Very curious to read that the ill-fated leader of Queen, Freddie Mercury, gave himself that stage name in honor of Melina, of whom he was a great fan...
Υπεροχη
Watch the movie Never on Sunday and this song was sung on the Ed Sullivan show.
Looks like the end of a big production.

1:15? Why bother? I always thought Melina Mercouri was the Greek answer to Lauren Bacall.
God that's a short version.
Yo from the thumbnail without reading the title i thought this was John Cena wearing a blonde wig 💀
