I just listened to over an hour of a classical guitar competition at Siccas in Germany. Twelve classical guitarists. All Bach pieces on various guitars. Amazing guitarists, but after a few played, I was bored to death. I watched the entire competition, and no winner was declared. They were all so good I don’t now how any on could choose one over the other. Of course, an expert probably could. Then I listen to a piece such as the. one above by by Cuban composer and classical guitarist Leo Brouwer played by Alexandra. She’s part of this moment, while, to me, listening to the competition was like listening to people from a graveyard. Alexandra sparkles. She makes classical pieces out of a Beatles’ song and “Wild Mountain Time,” and even when she plays more classical pieces, the sound contemporary to me. But, of course, that’s just me. I’m hardly an expert on anything. I just know what I like to listen to. And I like listening to Alexandra.
Felt like all my life: my dad played the classical guitar, initially I felt it was old-fashioned, he died of heart problems than I (way too young) started really listening to the stuff, realized that older music stuff was actually not only not "not cool" but, omg, the wisdom imparted! Then many years later there was the internet and there was people like Alexandra just bludgeoning me in my soul about these kind of pieces and I realized I was fortunate to relate. I'm no player myself, but I wish this stuff passes on through the generations between people who understand it because Humanity needs things like this to remember what it feels like to be a loving and feeling human. I'm exhausted by this, in a good way, cheers.
If I wanted to convince someone that the classical guitar is the most beautiful of all musical instruments, I would play for him/her this UA-cam video.
Beautiful phrasing here, plus sensitive musicianship and lovely tone quality; I fell in love with this instrument exactly 50 years ago and still play, teach and listen every day …….music is life 💕🎼
So looking forward to watching you make magic on Feb 23rd in Chandler AZ. It's now nearly 30 years since I left the UK (out of Manchester Airport having resigned from my job in Ashton-under-Lyne, left my home in Stockport and headed for the bog old yonder). Please, if you speak, lay on the Manc. I miss it somewhat, even though I am actually from Surrey! So excited to witness your precision and emotion IRL rather than just being able to see it on UA-cam.
Beautiful, clear in tone quality, and one of my favorite pieces of all time! Within this piece Brouwer showcases Cuban music in a most beautiful and meloncoly way! I, as an American composer, am working towards this goal within most of my works to show others how and what life is like in the U.S. but also to touch the hearts of people beyond my borders at the very same time! This is what Brouwer has done within this piece! This is not skill or talent it's mastery!!
What a beautiful strong and clean sound. So melodic and soul touching. This song is my all-time favorite. Practically everything realy good for me happened in November!
Very pensive and provacative. I love that you don't rush this piece, especially the second part. I've heard guitarists rip through that section, missing the beauty and warmth of it. You don't do that, and I thank you. I've enjoyed lots of your videos. Please keep them coming!
His hands express through the instrument the sound of a song that invades the soul! May God keep his hands always anointed, and his heart full of the will to touch more and more this instrument, for he speaks and enchants the soul of those who hear and appreciate this beautiful fingering of his hands! Thank you for sharing your gift! Carlos Brazil
I have never heard anyone play the guitar that I’d rather hear than you. Thank you, Alexandra, on this day before my favorite holiday of the year (in the U.S., anyway).
Princess Alexandra ... It's always so nice to see and hear your plays. As always, union of beauty and art, along with great taste in choosing the melody. Congratulations, keep on!
I'm in the process of learning to play this (after first hearing you play it) and I have listened to dozens of interpretations on UA-cam. Musically - tonally, audio, mixing, eq, etc yours is the best, (although I have to watch others for the fingerings :), and as a photographer your videos are exquisiite! I have watched and listened to many of them dozens of times. You are an inspiration.
This is wonderful. There is so much beautiful music in the world, perhaps one day we will stop fighting and all listen together. I sang madrigal in school; somehow this took me back. Thank you.
You are the most beautiful thing I have seen in this world! you are like an angel! And your way of touching. It is so beautiful to hear you and to see you play the guitar like that. I adore you
Listening to Whittingham play Brouwer is like she is making love to the instrument; caressing every note for its fulness. How fantastic this combination is, and how fortunated we are to have found her.
Alexandra you look like an angel, touching the strings you make the universe shudder. I wish you the best, never let yourself be touched. greetings beautiful angel.

Andres Segovia once said the guitar is an entire orchestra.
Cheers!
