Haha, Kruu Mod we do actually say 'Eh' ! We use it at the end of a statement as an interjection or prompt . It's like saying "I know, right?" or "I know, hey?" We just drop the h off of 'hey' and it becomes 'eh'. That's how I use it at least. :)

Great videos, it takes a lot of practice for us, whos mother language isn't tonal, to get everything right. Although i speak all the most important european languages, when i come to Thailand, all my Issan friends laugh at my mistakes, i can't even say "Koh Lan" how it should be really pronounced LOL. Anyway, keep up the good work and antother thing: if we had such beautiful teachers here in FalangLand, i would be a rocket scientist and i would be speaking 27 languages now :)
I'm Canadian, and I say 'eh' all the time! 😁 It's kind of like people who say, 'right' at the end of a sentence. 'cool, right!' or 'cool eh!' it's kind of silly, but hey, that's how we roll eh! 😁
Thank you for this very important lesson. I have been watching and following Kruu Mod for over two years now; it's nice to go back to your earlier lessons.
Though I have been studying and speaking Thai for sometime, getting the tones right is very tricky and your two lessons have done more to shed light on how to differentiate and put to practice speaking the tones.

Very helpful descriptions of tone, especially comparing to English words. A difference in tone can make all the difference in meaning of a sentence or question!

Kru Mod I am not a Canadian but I am a North American who has been to Canada and my explanation of "Eh?" is that it is like "mai" in Thai, a word to mark a question. So you can make a statement, and then say "eh?" at the end and it is like asking for confirmation of what you are saying. Example: "Dang! It's hot enough to break your liver out here, eh?" (Response: "Yep, sure is toasty.")

5555 not every Canadian says "eh" but it is equivalent to chai mai in Thai to say "right?"

Lol should have proof read that. Also though, I forgot to say that eh? is a way to convey a level of interest in what another person is saying. Whereas responding to someone's story by saying "oh yeah," is a bit flippant, saying "oh yeah, eh?" adds that you're interested and you'd like to talk about it.
All that in two little letters!

I would first like to say that it's very nice to be learning from your videos, I was looking for some time for one and when I saw one of yours it immediately stood out as the clearest and easiest way to learn so, I want to say thank you so much for making this available to us, eh?
Haha yes I am a Canadian, I was watching your video on the way to Hua Hin today about rising tone, that sound like our 'eh?' expression, I laughed when I thought it about it because I realized it's actually more complicated than I realized, so I thought I should explain myself, because I say it, really all the time.
It's kind of like a friendly way to confirm something, or to turn a statement into a question, or to engage someone to respond.
1. "Hey the canucks won, eh?"
Translation, the canucks won last night, did you see the game and have some comment about it, or, alternatively, confirm that you did see the game or you've heard that they've won.
(You see already how eh is easier.)
2. "Oh so you're going shopping, eh?"
Translation, I believe that you are going shopping, and want to know if that's true. I am probs asking because I want something.
3. "Eh?"
Yup you can use it all by itself. Could be something like, you're talking something about the flying spaghetti monster and I have no idea what you mean, or I didn't hear what you said, basically the equivalent of saying "What?," which is good because that What? is a lazy and rude thing to say, really.
4. "Oh yeah, eh?"
This is where it goes a little too far, and we just start saying eh just to say it, see: maritime Canada.
Simplest explanation: 'eh?' means 'confirm?'
But it's folksier, it's dear to our hearts and just a way to be friendly in Canada.

In New Zealand we say "Eh" at the end of a statement to make it a question :)

W็ow! How you find suitable wat and become monk there? Are you speak pretty good Thai for understanding other monks or they speak English with you? I ask because also want become monk and learn more about Buddhism, may be even learn some words and texts in Sanskrit and Pali.
I'm Vietnamese and I don't really have any problem learning the tones because Thai and Vietnamese both have similar tone.

I don't have any problem with tones when I say one syllable at a time, but when I try to put the syllables together into a phrase, and the tones change from one syllable to the next, I get really confused.
Don't worry, you will get there. Learn it at your own pace & keep practicing :)

Not sure you will see this comment but, I would like to know whether or not you have a video talking about the sound of Thai interrogative sentences; meaning how Thai people sound when they ask questions. Do you have any or are you planning to make a lesson about that? I noticed that one of the 5 tones in Thai sounds like a question or interrogative tone in Portuguese or English.

I have a question: do the word change if I pronounce the tone wrong? For example, if the word supposed to be high, but I pronounce the word low, will it change into another word like it does in Vietnamese?

About the tone and the word KAOJAI... is it true that the translation for the word "understand" is "Enter เข้า - Heart (or mind )ใจ " ? Because in Italian language we say something similar to Thai (even if we are not so deep and sweet like you) :)

Most foreigners who speak Thai just ignore the tones totally and they're still understood because Thai language is a high context language which means we rely a lot on the context.

These tones are like pronouncing English words like asking a question, shouting with an exclamation mark, or if you are down or upset, saying your words with a low tone. Good perspective right?
when the words are pronounced separately, it's easy to spot the difference but once the words put in one sentence altogether, they all sounded the same to me 😔

we can say it any situation, just depends on who is saying it, and you just say it not knowing like it is so common.
there is not a right or wrong time to use it, Its just a Canadian thing. you here people say it as a kid and pick it up.
