Not necessarily with these products. The networks affect means that both products decrease in usefulness as less people use them. CPU decoding is not that heavy on the processor, much heavier than VP9 and H264/5 but still not heavy enough to the point where 2010 hardware can't decode it real time.
Found out this is using resources while using AV1 , so be mindful of that aspect, some people don't have the headroom for that, but they could make some, if they are informed.
Twitch has the biggest advantage in the streaming industry that they just stopped caring, at this point i hope they actually face some competition so that they start actually doing shit to improve their site. But also twitch’s platform is just so much easier to use for streaming imo it just makes other streaming sites look like a joke. If yt creates a second website on top of that where it focuses solely on streams, i think it could beat twitch
Do your research you do NOT require hardware support for AV1, ANY half-decent general-purpose processor can decode AV1 if they have the AV1 codec installed, the only downside is that will be using about twice the power in watts to decode via software rather than hardware. I have personally tested watching AV1 videos on UA-cam via 14-year-old intel i7 920 (Nehalem microarchitecture) PC with Windows 10+AV1 codec installed and works fine!
