That actually was a really nice review. The title almost made me ignore this video but I'm glad that I've watched it. Good job! I have to admit that I don't like the current Mercedes-design but with the GLS, somehow, it works for me. I like the interior, as well and I don't mind that a GLE looks very similar. However: a car "reading" data from the satnav and reacting to it, isn't as new as you might think. BMW introduced a somewhat similar tech with the i3 quite a few years ago. They just didn't include the suspension. Nowadays, they developed that tech and you can get it for a wide range of cars (3, 5, 7, X5, X7). The air-suspension-models do adjust the damping, sway bars, etc. as well and there is a camera reading the road-surface just like Mercedes uses it (they introduced this camera with the S-Class in 2013, btw). That being said: was the X7 you tested equipped with 'executive drive pro' (that's what it's called in Germany)? That should work in the same way this GLS does.
How you trynn say a GLS comes close to an escalade, one time i drove an escalade and actually thought the steering wheel might not be connected to anything
580 is very underrated imo in the SUV game. It kills the G-wagon for extras and comfort and with soft close doors, as the G-Wagon still does not have, it is the best in the game with 22" wheels. The 23" are warm weather only tires, but with 22" tires the 580 screams and handles the road far better than any other car out there - X7, Lincoln, Caddy, Volvo, Audi, etc. Nothing compares even remotely close to the 2020 580 fully loaded at about $115k. It just does it all, well. And three rows of heated seats? Impressive.
I agree with the interior. You won't find an E-Class interior in an S-Class which is what they should've done with this new GLS.. Guess we'll have to wait for the facelift :(

The optional acoustics package Mercedes ( and others) offer in some models usually works to isolate certain frequencies of sound such as road/ tire noise or bluster (wind, airbourne) noise frequencies... it’s doesn’t not necessarily isolate the “cool” engine sound you mention, there is a wide spectrum of sounds a car makes, the trick is to isolate the annoying frequencies and amplify the cool frequencies ... some car makers are better than others in this ... you will only feel the difference if you drive cars with and without the acoustics pack back to back ... most buyers have no idea , and can’t tell the difference, So companies use the acoustic options to make money 😉

I completely agree regarding the Matryoshka approach when it comes to SUV interiors, its lazy and unimaginative ... Especially for vehicles approaching the 100k mark. Same with the interior color, all black is just too plain looking. Cognac or Caramel seats and doorcard inserts would've made it hundred times better ... But yet, at least it didn't have a carbon fiber trim. Anyway, the way the GL evolved is over its 3 generations is admirable & Mercedes deserves credit for it. That said, I would still pick the X7 over both the GLS and Escalade if the 7 seats are a priority ... Otherwise, G63 baby! The Assistant's response reminded me of the early days of Cortana and that video Arsenio Hall did comparing Cortana & Siri ... Damn you Microsoft, Damn you to hell. As always, excellent work M.
Over 100k for a car like this just shouldn’t be a surprise. The cost of cars just continues to creep up. When you think that a fully optioned Pilot tops out at over $50k, without the amazing powertrain, chassis, technology, panache, solidity, or amenities, then it doesn’t seem too far off the mark. Plus you get the markup just for the badge. I’d buy it in a heartbeat if it had the AMG trim grille of the GLE.
Hate what manufacturers are doing these days... different trim, engines and even models for different countries. In the UK, we currently get one engine option (a low powered diesel) and one trim level - no petrol, hybrid!

However, the focus of the episode and the reason for the headline was based on two points we thought in the edit that perhaps I harped on too much: The Integrated Starter Generator motor and the Curve Control system. Both not part of the X7. Both working in conjunction under at 6000 pound vehicle is what sets the GLS apart. As such, happy to respectfully disagree.

Escalade has common suspension problem....just like nissan brands it's like they don't have stabilizers everything goes loose after a couple of years..... infact most american cars have this problem
Great review, as usual. The power train is fantastic. Hopefully it evolves into a fully electric system in the near future. The design, although elegant inside and out, does not offer much of a differentiation other than its size and a few character lines. I am definitely not a fan of the "nesting doll" approach MB and other car manufacturers are implementing. It is a lazy excuse to reuse parts and still charge a premium. The fact that the interiors of the GLE and GLS are virtually identical is a massive disappointment. BMW and Audi are also guilty of implementing the same "nesting doll" approach and it is lame. What's interesting, to me, is that car manufarcturers that design/build "affordable products for the masses" do not rely on this nesting doll design approach and each of their vehicle types has a somewhat unique exterior/interior desig. -- case in point: Hyundai/KIA. But I digress. And charging extra for a panorama roof, side window shades, HUD and other amenities on a $100K vehicle is simply obscene. But then again, spending $100K on a vehicle is obscene in the first place.
Just a quick comment from a retired IT techie. Apple products are toys compared to Non apple (Read Intel/AMD/Android). Yeah it's nice to have both platforms available for the unindoctrinated masses of dazed apple zombies, but take it from me; if you ever had to support even a single apple product alongside the other business platforms you would rapidly understand how incredibly inferior the platform is. So, while you complain about there being no apple interface in the Mercedes, the real takeaway here is that Mercedes, along with every tech professional, understands apple is merely a toy, not a tool. The Truth don’t know if you are thinking of the same Mercedes brand that I am. I just got rid of my 2017 GLS 63AMG because it lived in the shop more than it did my garage. I still have my SClass which loves to visit the shop itself and now a BMWX7. The X7 and new GLS are extremely similar when equipped with identical options. I have an absolutely fully loaded X7 incl. things like DHP, Bowers and Wilkins, etc...and it is an absolute dream vehicle to drive and be in. Speaking from someone that has has them both, the X7 is better. Drive a new GLE as a service loaner with 1100 miles and that damn door handle plastics were already creaking and squeaking, the GLS has the same door handles so I imagine this will also be a problem in it. Not too mention the number of engine issues in the new Mercs.

For 124K you can pretty much get a G550. but if someone could afford that, i'm almost certain they could afford the G63. But a vehicle this size has no rear entertainment screens.....for a124K. Yeeea the X7 is still better than the GLS

The 2019 Cayenne in my opinion can really do it all and i think of it as more a sports car on stilts! If you need that much space then I guess the GLS is a good choice but I would never consider it sporty or nimble but fast yes! BMW X7 looks better inside and out. I think all that lighting looks a bit tacky. Bmw does SUV better in my opinion

The Truth don’t know if you are thinking of the same Mercedes brand that I am. I just got rid of my 2017 GLS 63AMG because it lived in the shop more than it did my garage. I still have my SClass which loves to visit the shop itself and now a BMWX7. The X7 and new GLS are extremely similar when equipped with identical options. I have an absolutely fully loaded X7 incl. things like DHP, Bowers and Wilkins, etc...and it is an absolute dream vehicle to drive and be in. Speaking from someone that has has them both, the X7 is better. Drive a new GLE as a service loaner with 1100 miles and that damn door handle plastics were already creaking and squeaking, the GLS has the same door handles so I imagine this will also be a problem in it. Not too mention the number of engine issues in the new Mercs.

For 124K you can pretty much get a G550. but if someone could afford that, i'm almost certain they could afford the G63. But a vehicle this size has no rear entertainment screens.....for a124K. Yeeea the X7 is still better than the GLS
Price depends on where you live and where other live. It’s cheaper in the states. My custom full spec is ~$85k

MotoMan these are urban assault vehicles meant to protect you and family at the shopping mall and supermarket. Those lose carts can really be dangerous! But seriously my 2 kiddos are teens now and these kinds of trucks/suv's come in handy!! Would I drive a Cayenne if my kids were all grown and gone well just maybe? The 2019 Cayenne in my opinion can really do it all and i think of it as more a sports car on stilts! If you need that much space then I guess the GLS is a good choice but I would never consider it sporty or nimble but fast yes! It's the definition of let's car pool and take the rug rats to school kinda vehicle!! And 123,000 dollars or something list isn't as expensive as I thought it'd be!!
