Funny that I mentioned my horse is also named Chico a couple of videos ago, then discovered you're hobbling Chico when my hobbles for my Chico just arrived in the mail. 😄

I started hobble breaking my two horses about a week ago. One is 21 and the other 5. They each tried to take a couple steps, stumbled and haven"t moved since while hobbled. Did I get lucky or have I postponed the wreck?

You have done well. Most horses figure it out pretty quickly.

why would you make him walk with both fronts hobbled together? isnt the point to get him standing? 😂

I’m not being critical so please don’t take any offense to comments, I think your a great horseman. Richard should be careful doing this, when a horse first has a foot tied, many will panic and lunge out and can run over or strike you. I gotten hit while just raising the foot the first time. I’ve done horses like this but would never film it. To many barn witches screaming animal abuse and cruelty. The horse needs this to help him deal with the stresses our world will put on him. I once a horse tangled under a fence, for who knows how long. She hadn’t panicked or hurt herself and allowed me to get her free. All because of previous training. Thanks have a great day.

You are absolutely right. I was trying to center the viewfinder on the camera and wasn’t watching closely. I had instructed him how to put the hobbles on but I did not emphasize staying to the side. Thankfully it turned out OK.

I feel bad for anybody nice who's actually named Karen, but, "Thanks Karen," is pretty much the new standard reply for barn witches with antagonistic opinions. 😄 Different story if it's a friendly person genuinely trying to be helpful, but snarky jerks get what's coming or they don't learn to think before "sharing."
I very recently had my 24 year old gelding get impatient when I was feeding and somehow managed to weave his leg through several bottom strands of high tensile fence. He's never been caught in a fence, but at 24 years old he suddenly decides to try this? Go figure! It's been at least 20 years since I did rope work with his feet or hobbled him, but all these years later it saved him from a wreck. He waited for me to notice and was a perfect gentleman while I pushed wires with my feet and lifted his leg out a strand at a time. They say there's never a cop around when you need one, but I say there's never a Karen around when you're proving them wrong. 😁

@@jimmyyounger618 Happy your horse came through it unhurt. That’s the main reason we teach it. I have also used hobbles in the mountains and to teach a fussy horse to stand quietly.
