  • This recording, from Phillip de Fremery's "Live in Concert" CD, was performed in 1991 at Mount Holyoke College, where Phillip has taught guitar since 1973. In this recording Phillip plays a 1976 Michael Cone Guitar, strung with gut, and plays using fingertips instead of nails. His rendition of the Asturias captures the deep spirit and nuance of Spain and its music, while his playing style at times hints at flamenco's raw, passionate tradition.
Phillip graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied with Michael Lorimer and Sol Joseph. He was a participant in the 1966 and 1968 masterclasses of Andres Segovia at Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Phillip was assistant to Oscar Ghiglia at the Aspen School of Music from 1972 through 1975.
I met Phillip in 1970. Our mutual friend David Grimes strongly recommended I make the 300-mile drive from Los Angeles to the Monterey Peninsula to hear a concert Phillip was playing. I did, and was awed and inspired by the artistry I heard there. We have been friends since.
