Build? You got off easy. Back when I built my Hermes Lite 2 in 2018, I had to order blank PCBs, all the components, and assemble everything by hand. I even built a second one for my brother. They both still work perfectly!
Nice build video. Another idea to help make sure that the shim doesn't shift is after you apply the thermal paste to the board and a fix the shim to the right location, use a little bit of nail polish at either end and allow a few minutes for it to dry, then this will make sure that when you slide it in it won't shift out of place. Thread the bolt through and a fix your nut. Back in the old days of radio construction, small amounts of wax would be used to hold things in place.
The best voice for ham radio footage on youtube👌. Tnx again for this lesson hermes lite 👍
Wow, thank you!
For me, the exceptionally crisp full range reproduction makes the occasional slightly sloppy enunciation sound really bad.
I must learn how to speak properly
Built the Hermes Lite 2 and have had a blast with it. I added the Hermes Lite 2 plus companion board for better CW with side tone and the ability to have audio I/O directly on the radio. Needed to load forked gateware. It worked well.
I was not able to get TX audio working the way I wanted with SDR Console but it works perfectly with Open HP SDR (PowerSDR).
Thanks for this video, I just ordered a complete kit, it will be nice to have SDR on my bench again.
Cool! Let me know how you get on with it.
I own many radios (flex and elecraft included) and this one is my favorite. Its affordable and the software for it is great. My preference is the linhpsdr software. NR2 algorithm is nothing short of amazing. I recommend this radio to everyone.
I want to get back on HF. Do you prefer the Hermes 2 to other budget radios such as the Xiegu 6100?
Just ordered one - looking forward to tinkering with it.
It seems a very nice rig, thank you for the review !!!
Thanks for the interesting video on the Hermes lite 2. I must look into this more, I may buy in the future Can't wait for you to show us how you got on with transmit.
Thanks for watching!
Look forward to learning about the new amp and how the QSOs progress with this thing.
That is an interesting product. With an amplifier network connected radio could make a nice remore rig (like being in the noisy city and having the radio somewhere with less noise).
My Icom has 100W but the noise level in the residential area is just too high to hear anything but very strong stations in my QTH. 73s
I just participated in CQ WPX CW with it at 5W and it survived (I'm also).
Will be interesting to see how it performance transmitting.
Amazed at the receiver performance, sound quality. Interested to see how it performs on tx. I guess amplifier will be a needed though and an atu. I'm thinking this could be much more cost effective option for me rather than upgrading my conventional transceiver (icom ic718). Very interested to see tx video, how much is the amplifier costing you?
Very nice Matt 👍
Thanks 👍
Good stuff. Looking forward to the amplified transmission.
You and me both!
Love your content, Thinking seriously getting a Hermies Lite 2 amazing performance, I wonder if you could show its multi band receiver capabilities, capable of 10 bands sacrificing TX capability ? Just by loading a different Gateway firmware
Good for CW Skimmer server or SparkSDR . I am interested in multi band WSPR mainly.

What an interesting radio.
Looking forward to seeing more about it.

Thanks! Love your videos…
It is a very interesting device but I bought an Apache labs Hermes as it has 6m plus a lot of other features for not a lot more money. Apache makes the Anan line in India and have been doing so for 20 years. I added it to a surplus Sailor T1130 for 250mw in and 500 w out with low pass filters. Uses Thesis. Cheers, VK5LB
Nice, what's the spectrum bandwidth on the waterfall? Looks like it's impossible to buy one of these
Thanks for sharing. Surprisingly the audio quality heard from the SDR is extremely goood. What audio additional setting do you utse there? Standard? '73 de YD1BAF/Didit - Indonesia.
a great little transceiver
It sure is!
Did you ever make the video about the transmit operation ?
KD6TXB here very good video on the received side of the hermes lite 2 looking for TX side thanks for upload good lesson hermes lite 2
Thanks for watching!
I am thinking about getting the Hermes Lite V2 - I am intermediate Lic and would like your thoughts on what to get so I am able to Tx at 50W also? would you throw a get list at me maybe .. cheers great vids .. Can you WSPR on the Hermes !!
Do any of the SDR operating systems support MARS frequencies?
I just received mine in the mail. 2 questions what's the little bit of supplied red wire for ? and did yours come with the 3mm nut and bolt?
You definitely need more videos on this. The Transmit capabilities with PowerSDR are fantastic and with SparkSDR you can monitor with additional firmware up to 11 band slices at once. I have even added a 220Mhz and 2 Meter Transverter to the Hermes. This is a very powerful platform. Can you please comment on this as I have heard this on the Hermes Forums. "This is the same inside radio used in the Apache Labs Radios". And the design came from early Apache Labs designs? I am not sure of these claim but it make some sense. I have used the radio for FT8, and SSB and I have tried 2 inexpensive amplifiers with it that are easily added, the MX-P50M and the KP-990. The KP-990 will transmit 50W output cleanly because it is a 100W amp.
I’m looking forward to trying this on air, hopefully within a couple of weeks :)
ANAN radios came from open source Hermes SDR radio which came from earlier project called OpenHPSDR. Hermes Lite was cheaper version of Hermes SDR. Later Hermes Lite became Hermes Lite 2.
@@antronx7 OK, thanks for the explanation.
Which software would you suggest to be used on a Mac?
Try to recieve UVB 76 (4625khz) with it, or other station like that(Squeaky wheel, The pip)
Good video.
Thank you 🙏
Is this voip capable?
Where it is selling ? out stock
Correct , life is to short for QRP
Hi Tech Minds, what external amplifier do you plan on using with the Hermes Lite 2? How is TX performance compared to a traditional HF transceiver?
Very good. I use mine with an MX-P50M and I run PowerSDR Thetis. I have used this for FT8, SSB and HF Winlink. Still working on Winlink. The Noise Reduction on the Hermes is very good also.
Do you know when you will be releasing the part 2 of this video ? I would be keen to see what it is like on the air!
I kind of done a part 2 here, while using the amp, ua-cam.com/video/UD3UcFBtd3w/v-deo.html
@@TechMindsOfficial thanks, being mainly a QRP. enthusiast, I had skipped this video.
I’ll be doing a QRP HL2 video using data modes at some point.
@@TechMindsOfficial That's brilliant!
Have you done any digital modes yet?@@TechMindsOfficial
I like the idea of this tuna and I would like to buy it however the one thing I would have problems doing is the 3 mm hole as I am registered blind I can do most things but if I ordered one would it be possible for me to send it to you to finish off I watch a lot of your channels and and am I have bought some stuff on your recommendation because I love experimenting with radio my name is David and my callsign is 2E0 Alpha Alpha India and because I’ve just spoken it out it’s phonetically told you what it is so different apologise regards David
Hi Matt goodevning sorry for asking do you have any idea where yo buy hermes lite 2, be'coz in there website is out of stock tnx 73.
Unfortunately the only place you can buy the HL2 is Makerfabs website. I would recommend to join the Google groups to be informed when Makerfabs will do their next batch. The problem at the moment is shortage of FPGA chips.
Ah o.k. tnx Matt,I'll try to join the group more power to your channel.
I'm a novice, are there ways to use an encrypted messaging app (Like Signal) to transmit over this, instead of voice?
No. Amateur radio in almost every circumstance forbids the use of encrypted communications.
i'm buying everything you review matty .... stop it!! 😆😆😆😆 no really another top review
hahah I'm so sorry, but then again, im not sorry! lololol Enjoy my friend.. :-)
does the heat shield come with the kit??
The shim comes with the case :)
Been out of military comms for 30 yrs but SWL was teenage hobby and I might just finally have time for a ham license. UA-cam research frequently mentions Hermes needing "ethernet" connection. My router for 5Ghz wifi is completely on the far side of my apartment and I dont fancy a 30 foot cable snaking through the rooms. Will Hermes work via Wifi? I have no intention of networking a hamshack full of equipment. Thankyou!
In my tests WiFi was not great, it needs cable. However, there is no reason why you cannot connect the HL2 directly to your computer via the Ethernet port, it can be done without a router.
@@TechMindsOfficial Thank you! A great solution from someone who knows what he is doing😅
@@TechMindsOfficial Your reply brought into focus what I had been missing that the connection via Ethernet ports is just a communication link between two devices. I think the Hermes will fill the bill for SWL and allow me to move into Ham radio when I qualify and not break the bank. Thanks again. Ray
You can make it an 100w with mrf101an , take a look .
I will investigate, thanks 🙏
Can this be used as a pan adapter for an HF transceiver?
Depends, most HF radios have their first IF well outside the HF band so if the Hermes can only cover 0-38MHz then the answer is likely to be no. You'd be better served by a dirt cheap RTL-SDR if all you want is a pan adapter.
@Clint Jay Exactly what I would of said
QRO my friend "when triodes are glowing electrons are flowing"
"when graphite is red all has been said"
Wow, Thank you for this info. Very well done vid. I hope it works on cw. Looks like it might. 5 watts is no problem. I would imagine one could use a qcx amp with this setup.

Construction - > Drill one hole !
Or you could just give it a go on 5W, don't make the mistake of believing DX is only possible with hundreds of watts, it's perfectly possible and *much* more satisfying to a contact with QRP, 5W will get you all over the world.
I’ve experimented with WSPR before and it’s amazing how 10mw can reach around the world. But my personal preference is to run 100 Watts on HF when using Voice. Having the right conditions, and the right antenna, using QRP could be fun and I’m not mocking anyone who enjoys QRP. :)
Life is too short for QRP ..... Are you an old man?
I have been considering one of these for a while thanks for the superb video Mathew it’s answered all of my questions stay safe thanks again 2E0ERO
Glad to help! Cheers
Too bad these suffer from unobtainable parts.....can't get them.
Just bought one, it’s in stock now
what cant they just sell this shit assembled. dont have time to fuck around will all this bs
If 'Boomer' Trump had a HAM technician license, he could tweet until the cashcows come home.
This video pushed me over the edge. I ordered one. :D 73 de w8tam
haha! Sorry not sorry :-)
