To anyone who is confused about what to invest. Always ALWAYS invest in shoes! You have only one pair of feet for your lifetime and you want make sure that they work as long as possible. Be careful what you choose: look the shape, materials and also how they were made. You want to invest in shoes that you'll love and that will last for many years!

I love what you were saying about the colourful capsule wardrobe! I'm a lover of bright pieces and I found that the easiest way (for me) to make it work was to keep the bottoms more neutral and have more colourful tops. Also dresses are a great way to incorporate colour because you don't really have to pair them with anything (or if I do I pair them with a more neutral jacket/cardigan)
I just want to encourage anyone who is a bit hesitant to try a capsule because they love colour to give it a go because it is totally possible!
... also I do have a video sharing my tips for a colourful capsule just in case anyone is interested in that.
Thanks as always for the inspiration Erin! If I'm ever feeling a bit bored/tired of a capsule I watch your videos and it re-inspires me! Xx

I've tried capsule wardrobes a few times but they're tricky for a number of reasons. For one thing, I'm living a few different lifestyles in that I'm an intern in an office, but also an art student, and then my personal style is very casual. So I have to have business casual clothing, clothes I don't mind if they get wrecked, and then casual clothes I like and want to keep nice. In addition, I live in an area where the climate is only consistent for a few months of the year, otherwise it can jump 30 degrees in a matter of days.
So far I'm just sticking to not buying new clothing items. I graduate soon and I think that will really simplify the kinds of clothing I need because instead of needing "messy" clothes five days a week, I can get by with just one painting outfit for at home.

I'm about to start art school, but intend to do freelance / project corporate work (PR). But then my personal style is - like you - really casual and chill. (i once wore sweatpants to the office by mistake, but totally worked that :b )
I'm really drawn to the idea of a capsule wardrobe though - after living in 4 countries in the last 9 years. So, huge conundrum!

You can still do it!! I have faith in you. I have special rules for myself to make it fit with my lifestyle. I don't count accessories because I rarely wear them and I give myself a little grace for vacation or special occasions. I highly recommend still trying to stick to a capsule most times. Maybe you need 40 items instead of 33 to account for a few extra outfits for your causal personal style. Go for it! Put in 4 shirts, 2 pants and a hoodie. Do whatever you want! You got this! :) don't forget you can lounge at home in whatever you want. Good luck!

Local fabric stores, junior colleges, and community education centers often have sewing classes. I really recommend learning to sew if you can.

I take a different approach for exercise clothes. I pared my wardrobe down first. Then I make sure to include at least one to three workout outfits in my capsule each time. I just wear workout clothes too much for me to pretend that I won't wear them out of the house. For working out at the gym I just wear whatever I want from the rest of my clothes that aren't in the capsule. This has worked really well for me and kept me from feeling stifled when looking for something comfy to wear on errands etc. I love it!

Oh, Erin! I hope you see this! I just got back from my tour of Germany and I was there for ten days. I had such a wonderful time! I wanted to tell you though, I was able to pack everything I needed for ten days into a carry on! This may not sound like such a big deal, but everyone there was crazy stressed and over packed (in my opinion) and I felt so much freer to not have to worry about so much stuff! Everyone was also so impressed and found it funny how little I packed. This was such a great opportunity for me to talk to them about my capsule wardrobe without sounding preachy! I was just able to say "I have a small wardrobe, but I love every piece, and I never worry about feeling cluttered in my closet!" Thank you so much for all of your incite into building my capsule! :)

Great video, the tip about making statement pieces ones you won't wear together is GOLD because I love intricate/colourful patterns. Thank you so much, I hadn't thought of it! :)

Loved hearing your answers to these questions! I thought about doing a capsule wardrobe, but where I live the weather fluctuates ALL the time. One day it can be 65, the next day 80 so I have my winter and summer clothes mixed :P I think I have about 40 items or so and do keep several items packed away (formal dresses, heavy coats) but I wear about 20 regularly. I love that I have way less laundry to do! My favorite season is summer because I love wearing dresses :)

@Voerti -- Good point. I share the same difficulty. Put all my winter clothes away and now have 30 spring/summer things I can't wear. I'm freezing and too lazy to get the box down out of the attic with the warmer clothes. Maybe summer will come someday. Meanwhile, I'm running around wrapped in a blanket.

+Claire Germain Nail oh that image made me laugh! I always find it a bit tricky in the "in between seasons". Lately I've been having a bit of a crossover period where I have a few items from my warm weather and a few from my cold weather capsule all mixed in. It gets a little messy to be honest but its better than being freezing! Haha 😂

Another idea for sentimental clothes is to take it to a tailor and have them modify it, so that you can keep a small amount of the material but it is still a 'full' item that can be donated to someone else. You can then turn the small piece of material into a scarf or a bookmark, so you get use out of it and still have the sentimental value.

i think sewing is really worth learning because you can alter all your clothes and you can sew simple things within a short time of learning i wouldn't recommend the non-sewing options because they won't last well

From the Aussie Cleaner. ..why not be an advocate to get school uniforms in every school to help the environment. Here in Australia nearly every school has children wear a uniform. I buy my kids 1-2 uniforms and they wear them all year and add a jacket in Winter. When they grow out of the uniform I sell it and then try and buy the next size second hand when possible. Then on weekends they only need a few outfits.

If you have loads of them - you probably should sort them out. However, usually you do not include them into your Capsule Wardrobe :)

I believe she said PJ's underwear, etc to not count toward the capsule. Workout clothing do not either.

    • @HaHaHaLMFAOtv

Sadia Tasneem stick with natural fabrics! Like linen, cotton and silk. They breathe and keep you cool outside. And try to wear clothes that have relaxed cut such as tunics, skirts and flowy dresses ;)

i actually have never understood the hype about capsule wardrobes. I have a handful of clothes all year all the time. mine is more of a "life wardrobe". i recently looked at what i feel the most comfortable, professional, and sexy in and got rid of the rest, which was not much. lol.
