Great job demystifying how a gas gauge works. Thank you for your time.

The potentiometer in the fuel gauge failed, seems every truck I’ve owned had the same problem. Thanks for making it seem easy. Just a safety tip folks, always wear your safety glasses while dropping the fuel tank. Rust and dirt can get in your eyes, not a fun trip to the ER.
Thanks David, see you next Tuesday!

Thanks for helping me fix my fuel gauge. It was this video & only this video that made it possible. I wish the sending units could be made of a higher quality 😕but I'm glad my tank is still inside the cab & is easy to get the sending unit 😜

The needle on my 86 burb’s gauge usually points straight down in the 6:00 position.
    It moves sometimes to 3:00-4:00.
Other times it almost reads empty over by 9:00 position but is still well below empty.
    It’s odd.

Nice job Dave Welch!! I m still fooling around with my gauge on my Nova still not showing fulll. It's stops a little over a half a tank. After I drive about 120 miles then it starts to work. It has a new sending unit. I know the gauge is good too. So I'm gonna check my ground off the sending unit and if that doesn't do it, I'm gonna assume it's the "new" sending unit not working correctly.

Sounds like a bad resistor on the back of the guage.

My K10 had the right-side gas tank removed by a previous owner. Currently working on getting gauges working again in the cabin, but I also want to get the second tank back on the truck which means i need to order one. Is it necessary to remove the bed of the truck to install a new gas tank or does it just make installation easier with the bed removed? Can you do this without a lift, with just two or three people?

What if the gauge is reading full or even beyond full all the time?

Where did you get that fuel sending unit tool at? I've searched all over this video's page, but I'm not seeing a link for where you can purchase one. My '72 K10 4x4 in-cab tank is suffering from this same issue as it always is resting at a 1/4 tank even when the tank is completely full. Great video, Dave! Thank you!

My scenario (77 c10): reads empty when off like normal, turn on ignition and it always stays well past full and doesn’t move unless ignition turned off

On my 84 k1500 it reads 3/4 full but when I turn the key it reads a quarter over full. Would the be the sending unit?

@@BROTHERSTruckPartsTV no, Lowest it goes is 3/4 with no power, then when I turn the key it goes past full but isn't constant how much past full it goes. Sometimes is about half an inch, other times is goes all the way down.

My fuel gauge shows a quarter tank but the fuel tank is full. I checked all the wires and did a test as you've shown to eliminate the fuel gauge and wires. I replaced the fuel sending unit, however, the problem still exists and the gauge still shows a quarter tank. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Test the resistor on the back of the guage itself.

So im having issues with my fuel gauge just today. Its stuck passed the full. When I turn on the ignition i can see it slightly move and when i turn the ignition off i can see it slightly move to empty but still stuck pass the full position…i noticed this happened today…i have a new gas tank with a new sending unit…

    • @BROTHERSTruckPartsTV
      @BROTHERSTruckPartsTV  Рік тому

It sounds like you have no 12v power to the gauge itself. If it goes over full and continues to climb that's usually the cause. otherwise its a bad ground on the new sending unit.
