The oil filter housing O ring must go in the correct groove , it has a slot to help remove it, put some oil on the O ring to help it go back in and start the housing by hand before using that wrench.
The IMS issue is a bit tricky. The majority of problems occurred with the 996, 986 generation models. They had a single row narrow bearing. It could be upgraded with the LN Engineering replacement. The 987's can not be upgraded without opening the engine block. And they have not had the same issues because the IMS bearing was improved.
Thanks man . You are the MASTER for all of us we are dreaming to have one of those days a pony boxster or a horse 911 like you have. Very good videos you are doing . Thx
I'd love to have a Porsche, but it's the cost of maintenance and parts that has always put me off buying a Boxster - or any Porsche for that matter. I dread to think what a Porsche dealer would charge for this work... Especially when you see how easy it is to do. Nice video.
My oil changes on my 986 S cost $70. it isn't bad at all. You can do the work yourself and save a ton of money. I have been refreshing my 986 S over the past year and a half. by my calculation using dealer labor cost I have saved over $8000 in labor. it isn't hard.
Maybe when I retire. For the moment I opted for the easy option. Mx5 NA 1.8. OK I know it's not fast. But it's lots of fun in the twisties, cheap to run, reliable and sooo easy to work on. Daily driver and rolling restoration since 2017. Oil and filter change comes to about 30€! Has an after market air filter so that's 0€.
I have a Porsche Cayman 987 and do all the work myself or with friends easy to work on and not that expense to run it’s my everyday car and best drive I’ve ever had enjoy it everyday
Very useful for those who want to tackle that kind of jobs. Would be good to see a video on you whether and how to change the AOS. I believe there is supposed be some suction pressure when the car is idle and oil cap is loose to check suction. Would be good for you to tell your subscribers the difference between the suction. My Porsche specialist said when it’s like a coke bottle fizzed up suction then the AOS is on its way out and signs of ims issue. Anyway great job
Love watching your videos learn a lot I own a 2005 911 bought it new had the IMS problem Porsche replaced the motor it happened at 30000 miles still love my car I bought the Diagnostic meter in your recommendation happy I bought it . Keep making these great videos .
I think you have a sticky starter motor solenoid, at ~9min marker you've started the engine and I could hear the starter motor overrun sound. Might be worth looking into it before it develops into bigger problem... Few tips, don't use hammer on allen keys, you can use a ring spanner on the end of the allen key and then you can get a better feel as to what is happening with the bolt... Get yourself a proper socket and wrench kit, torque wrench as well! All bolts have torque spec and over-tightening is common issue with sump plug and filter/filter housing.
Great videos ur very good at getting info across I hope I can get a Porsche of my own one day love to b able to work on my own that is my dream keep up with good work stay safe also👍
Heated steering wheel ON/OFF button is hidden away behind steering wheel on lower section/arm. Never found it to switch off on my Cayenne, a few years back, but only had the car 10 days before returning it. Driving my Panamera back, from purchasing at a dealer, I found button behind wheel, result! Like the lift, I will look into one, thanks Satch.
love my quick jack and love the scan tool. I bought both on your recommendations. I use a cup style oil filter wrench instead. I have never seen that kind you are using. The oil and air filter change are pretty similar on the 986. this is a good video to show people they don't need to spend $400 on an oil change.
No new crush washer or torque setting either? Strip out your sump plug hole and you'll feel the pain. The flat 6 is notorious for needing topping up after an oil change if you just use the manuals oil change figures. Best to just carry a 1 litre bottle of oil for the first full temperature soak drive at least.
Excellent very useful video for basic essential maintenance. Suggestions. Take the oil filler cap off first to ensure all the oil comes out, use a funnel to fill, and use an oil collector for safe disposal of waste oil at the local recycling centre. Look forward to the next video on coil packs and spark plugs. How about a video on cleaning that engine? ;) Plus, cleaning out drain holes, (very important!), basic maintenance to; lights, wipers, brakes, tyres, balancing, tracking, .......
Hey Satch, great video! Curious to know if you've done other mods aside from the IPD plenum and throttle body. Specificually, curious about the deep sump mod, low temp thermostat, and the oil filter adapter. If not, I imagine it could make for a good video!
I've just landed myself a Boxster and I'm in love. Where do I stand with doing this myself and still wanting to show service history when it comes to selling later? The car has Porsche specialist history and it would be nice not to break the chain.
@@eddherring4972 Thanks Edd. Would you do some work yourself and have services at the garage as well then? Would a garage install parts that I've bought? I can see why Harry of Harry's Garage keeps a folder for each car!
@@eddherring4972 thanks so much for this Edd. It's really helpful. You're so right about it being worrying / daunting. I've ordered myself the 101 projects book and the icarsoft diagnostics device to get as informed as possible. Best thing I've heard is to get out and drive it. There's no way I'll be able to just let it sit as that flat six howl is addictive! Excellent advice.
Thanks @@Sto950 mine is a 2005 "S" and is wicked fun. Oddly enough, my car started its life in Belfast. I'm down in sunny Devon so it gets to play on Dartmoor!
Take photo's and the date of the old filters and keep the receipts. I kept the old oil filters so new owner could see there was no metal bits in there. It's very easy to do.
@@stephenauty2402 good idea. As much evidence as possible that your car isn't a lemon. My copy of 101 projects landed this morning and it's a cracking book. Just need to start building my toolset up now!
Great video. I like your deep oil pan bucket. Very clever. I’m curious how you got the car jacked back up in the air after lowering it down on the easy up jack system without the wheels on. The system is not capable of lifting a car that has been lowered to the ground without the wheels on due to the angle of the hydraulic shocks per the users manual. I would recommend purchasing a allen head socket to torque the oil drain plug to the correct spec and use a new crush washer as they only cost .89 cents from Porsche. It’s also a good idea to open the oil fill cap before draining the oil.
Question Can you run a pipe to the Ims and have a solid baring and run oil to it so it’s intermittent slap there’s with oil to coat it in some way ??? There must be some way to stop this issues 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Are you going to get the starter motor changed at any time? Mine also makes a squeal sometimes - been doing it for years, but haven't bothered with it tbh. It can be a bit of a lottery if the car is going to embarrass you or not when I start it! lol
Mobil super 3000 in a Porsche? Why not Mobil 1? I run Millers CFS NT+ in a Civic FN2... That's a £60 pound 5l oil.. Otherwise informative video. I'm contemplating about getting a Cayman in the following years. Still have to save loads for it. The other barrier is I have another car I like as much:Integra DC2
That doesn't seem too difficult at all. You are breaking down the mystique of out working on and owning a Porsche. Nice one. 👍
The oil filter housing O ring must go in the correct groove , it has a slot to help remove it, put some oil on the O ring to help it go back in and start the housing by hand before using that wrench.
Great job with the video Satch. Enjoy watching your videos here in the States. That air filter has seen better days though.

Personally, I’m a fan of using 5w-50. Porsches in my experience run hot so having that extra temp protection is worth the extra cash👍

Perfect timing on this video! I am getting set to do my first DIY oil & filter change some weekend soon. 2005 Boxster S (987.1).

Wow, that air filter! Thanks for making this, gives me some comfort on what to expect with my incoming 987.1 in Cobalt Blue...one week to go!
dont forget to warm your engine first, thins the oil so it comes out better. also put a little oil around the seal to stop it pinching.
Nice video! Love the quick jacks -- definitely on my list for my next garage upgrade!
Nice one Satch, thanks again. I'm looking forward to seeing you do the ignition coils as I've never known too much about them.
They’re usually pretty easy! Just don’t snap a bolt haha

Really good with coloured Porsche engines covers
Saw that Jack in Costco, one day one day 🙏🏼 looks amazing

Great Vid Ash! Thanks!
that oil seams to be well burned
i try not to let the oil get sticker as that, but guess is ok till that point?
very interesting Satch

Didn't see anything about IMS bearing health inspection
Did you not crush the air con pipes with that lift?
I think owning a Porsche is has cheap and expensive as you make it just dont go to main dealers for repairs and serviceing
What are your thoughts on installing a clear engine cover? Personally, I think it looks really cool!
Did u not warm the oil before draining?

Didn't like the sound of that startup...
sounded like a dodgy starter motor at the end
