How To Locate Free OTA Antenna TV Channels in your Area

- In this video I explain several ways you can locate free over the air TV channels that broadcast in your area. I go through three different reception analysis websites along with the benefits of each one. Having a list of what channels can be picked up at your location can give you an idea of what you should be getting and what to do if you're missing channels.
Reception analysis websites:

The Wineguard antenna you recommended for me is working great. I installed it in my garage attic and I receive 69 channels. I did add an Oon pre-amp from Walmart which cleaned up the clarity and it comes in really great now.
I like your videos, you do a good job. I’m a Ham radio Operator and building antennas is my favorite thing. Antennas are fun and challenging to just try and pull in a weak signal. I’m learning from you, thanks 👍🏻
As a ham, you likely have the tools to do your own RF amplifier.
I think it would be interesting to make a 3 input amplifier. Low VHF, High VHF and UHF could all come from their own optimized antennas, be amplified and then combined.
I have also thought of an "all electronic" rotor as a project too. Basically the idea is you use a "video fader" like thing to combine signals from a pair of dipoles at right angles. Audio band signals up the coax can control the electronics up on the tower.
Thanks Tyler, just finished installing my CM-4228HD Antenna with CM-7778HD Pre-amp at 40-ft AGL, about 60-ft HAAT. Was able to get the TV stations predicted. Followed your advice.😃 Will cancel my SAT service end of the month. Use off-air for local info and stream everything else. Just had wireless Internet service installed, finally decent DL/UL speeds with OK latency in rural Ontario, Canada👍
A very good detailed description of what the viewer needs to know. Great resources. Some sites do not show translators either. Thanks Tyler. Fortunately all of our translators are in UHF 17-34 and are in the same direction.
Lots of great information here. Thanks for putting this into terms I can understand better, and for suggesting the different web sites I can look at!
WOw never thought I’d care about what free channels I got. Glad this info was here
Thanks Tyler. I ordered and received the antenna you recommended for me. I ordered a JPole and an 8 port distribution amp. I ordered a 40" JPole so I have plenty of height adjustments. Will wait on the preamp until I see what channels I pick up.
Can you please reply and let us know how it works out. That way others that are considering purchasing Tyler's services have some testimonials.
Guess not 🙄😕😕
Awesome!! Dude you are awesome. Thank you 🙏 I’m gonna study up and upgrade. Following you on facebook and subscribed.
Thank you. Great info video.
Is it better to do a channel scan during the day as opposed to night or does it not make a difference?
Where I am, all but a couple of stations were unaffected by the repack, and tvfool is still accurate for me
That's good to hear. In my area it's mostly inaccurate. Nearly every TV station moved.
@@AntennaMan yeah, but WETA (our PBS affiliate) has been under tower maintenance for a while and only recently was I able to watch them again
Thank you for educate us!
Great info and easy to understand. Thank you. Best wishes
Where I live I can get 12-14 channels. I get cbs abc pbs and sometimes fox and with the repack supposedly I can get nbc but I’ll have to look tonight.
Great video. Going to your website. Thank you.
Excellent video.
Great, funny and informational, as always. Can’t wait for the 100K Subscriber Special!!
*IF YOU ARE A NEW CORD CUTTER, I RECOMMEND SUBSCRIBING TO THIS CHANNEL*
Finally, it’s a shame that Canada doesn’t have their own Channel Research Map Website.
Thanks for this Informative video.
Now, I will have an awesome day.
Using RabbitEars; does the direction (true/magnetic) imply direction that we should point our antenna?
Theoretically, yes. It would be the direction toward the transmitter.
Great information
Great video!
Thank you for the video.
you may hate me but i understand why ppl wanna watch tv for free but streaming is the in thing i understand ppl don't have much money and wanna save money but i have not much money but i love to stream live tv not all ppl can not use an atenna but i will say streaming is the way to go and easier to get channels to watch and i love it
I love your videos
Otadtv.com is pretty helpful to me. Great video as usual.
Yes, there map looks quite good.
I may have to go up on the roof and try pointing my antenna at some different places. I have a big directional antenna pointed at the main group of stations. I may try the others to see if there is any good reason to put a 2nd antenna up there.
Dude I wanna see you on a rooftop doing an actual installation with a complete antenna/rotator & a 3 story house instead of indoor antennas pointed out windows & outside backyard set ups. & Show people how you actually install one Yeah that ChannelMaster CM 3020 would be a good choice. Show people YOU ARE A PRO! & not a paid Amazon or UA-cam watcher
He is going to do that this winter during bad weather conditions. The "Antenna Dude" abides.
I agree
I have plans to put a mast on the top of my house but need a new roof. It will be a few months. In the meantime I do have a few more antenna reviews left from my prior house.
@@AntennaMan Just wait until it sleets or snows.
Thanks
Here are two great apps that people could use to look up to see how many over the air channels that they can get in their area: Antenna Point and FreeTV (the FreeTV app is an app from The Free TV Project).
You are killing me! LOL! Keep it up!
I use the TV Antenna app for iPhone or Android. $2.
I got everything to work and downloaded 63 channels per your instructions the only one that I can visually see when I press input is my local channel 3. How do I find the other channels
Nice video
I got a station in my area with 17 different sub channels. I think its call letters are KSCZ but I don't know since they don't identify them selves at all. But all the sub channels run at like 20fps and are sub 360p maybe even lower. Even though the video standard is 480p I guess they down scale it so it will fit all the sub channels. Most of them are useless shopping and singing channels
I can only imagine how the picture quality is!
Mabe when3.0 over the air is here will see 50 subs on a single channel
So I keep seeing these listings on Amazon for TV Antennas with ranges listed as 800 to 1000 miles. The first question that comes to my mind is: "In what Universe" ?
Good information
Wow! Used to love TV Fool.
Used to live in Philly. WFMZ is such a waste. Can’t figure out why Allentown never branched out into its own TV market. Can cite other cities with large cities that are even closer that have their own TV stations.
The Lehigh Valley was supposed to be its own market but early stations in the 50s struggled since most tuners didn't have UHF. Once Philadelphia stations built taller towers to reach the area and was pretty much the nail in the coffin for the Lehigh Valley being their own TV market
I thought that bit rate would mean what type of definition is being broadcasted. At min it was 720p. But what source type < hd or transmitter setting would control this? Does aluminum siding help or block antenna reception? My antenna is a 9095P Wingard in the bedroom facing in the correct direction chitown.
Aluminum siding will weaken OTA TV signals. If your have reception issues you'll have to do the same thing to your antenna that some do with the dog when it's bad - put it outside.
I live about 50 miles from Albany Schenectady area in New York the channels are VHF AND UHF what do I need in this case. Thank
Informative videos - Question: Why is KABC TV Los Angeles HIDDEN after running station scan? Will different antenna UN-HIDE KABC? Thanks
It is hidden because you aren't getting the signal strong enough to lock it in. You'll need a better antenna setup. Consider an antenna recommendation from me at the link below. This can prevent you from spending hundreds of dollars and time wasted on setting up the wrong antenna for your area. antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

I’m new to trying to hook up an antenna, but I can’t find any stations anywhere near me, is there anything I can do?

Can you program your TV remote to Show IE Fox RF Channel 31 to Channel 4 on your TV Remote.
Do you install Antenna's in Chadds Ford Pa.?

Which is the best antena to be used in Puerto Rico
I recommend these websites to look at to see what over the air TV channels are available in your area: Go Mohu, Channel Master, and The Free TV Project.
No, there’s nothing our government can do right. Question for ya, I live in SC. If I subscribed to UA-cam tv and entered Pittsburgh zip code as my home zip, could I get Pittsburgh cbs, abc etc? Big Steelers fan
Thanks!
I see what you mean by antennaweb being conservative. They say I should only get two channels at the house I bought in the country but even with the flat antenna you say not to buy (It was just a test, I swear!), I am getting 20+ channels.
Yes, antennaweb.org isn't the best to use.
I guess there are no reception analysis for Canada?
Hi I bought a cheap antenna from Walmart in Whitehall Pennsylvania I only fox 29 and 69 news why I can't not get ABC and NBC please help me

Hey can you help why i recieve TVP 3 Poznan (which is a local channel) from 100 km, but i didn't get German channels (i even have stb samsung gxmb540tl for German freenet). TVP 3 Poznan broadcast tower is against where antenna is pointed on. German tower is same how my main channels
One of my 3 ota stations switched frequency now it doesn't come in at all and have no way of moving the antenna from the window to the roof.
Still no MeTV Toons in my 32506 area
I have tried to find a local antenna installer in my area (Zelienople, PA 16063). Do you know how I can find a professional antenna installer?

Is there a list somewhere as far as when what cites will be switching to ATSC 3.0? I have seen lists of saying what cites have switched and what cites will be switching but nothing more specific about the when.
I'll have a video on this topic in a week or two
@@AntennaMan Thanks, I will definitely be looking forward to that. I just bought a Sony X900H and it has the new ATSC 3.0 tuner in it and I live in Baltimore which I understand is one of the first 40 markets planning to switch. I know Portland, Pittsburgh and I think Las Vegas have already switched. Last week of July the Baltimore tv tower antennas were replaced as part of the final repack and I know they applied for a " license to cover" but I can't find any definitive time as to when they will have ATSC 3.0 available even if it's in its infancy
It's always bugged me that they don't put some kind of repeaters around the City so you Signal in weak areas.
The broadcasters don't care. If you can't get their signal they'll get more money by retransmission fees on cable and satellite services
What do you think of the Philips Outdoor HD TV Antenna Amplifier with Signal Strength LED?
Looks like junk!
@@AntennaMan Thank you!
I've got a very cheap junky antenna with pieces of it broken off and missing and a have no idea where I put the amp that came with it and according to all these sites where I live at says I shouldn't get anything on tv but I get 5 channels where I'm at but I've got a good antenna I'm going to put up whenever I take the notion to do so.
If it came with an amplifier it's likely a junk Chinese model. Consider a better antenna setup.
I have noticed that you have recommended Pluto tv which I have can you tell me if Philo tv is safe to you my credit card on ? Thank you
Pluto doesn't take credit cards but it should be safe with Philo
Hey antenna man it's not everyone in government! No oversight when they believe each department is doing their job of updating the information. I keep telling Amazon how sad their Logistics is and it never changes. 3-4 years now I've been pointing out things that could be better for the company AND customers.
When was the last time you cobtacted the FCC about these errors?
in my area there isn't a weather channel anymore. also i want to check out that hdmi device.
Just set up an outdoor antenna. My local ABC and Fox are broadcasting from the same location with the same signal strength. For some reason I can only pull in Fox. The ABC move was supposed to have been completed 2 years ago.
Even though they are in the same area they're on different tower heights, operate on different frequencies, and have different signal paths. If you're having issues consider a custom antenna recommendation from me at the following link: www.antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

Whenever you conduct a scan for free over the air TV channels, please only look for the digital ones and not analog. At least in the United States, analog channels have been off air since 2009.
Analog TV was actually around until last year in the US. See video below. ua-cam.com/video/mgAxeluxYkY/v-deo.html
I miss TV Fool.
Tyler, do they make HD rabbit ears? I miss the Black Hand of Death.
Yes they are the $300 "gold plated" ones with the unexplained knob on the base.
@@kensmith5694 That knob is to control the spark between the two HD ears.
I live 30 miles east of Los Angeles and I get all local channels really well except one, KTTV, 11.1. The audio and picture have occasional drop-outs. I’ve added a signal booster which seemed to help, but I’m still getting drop-outs. Any suggestions?
Sounds like you need a better antenna setup. Consider an antenna recommendation from me at the link below. This can prevent you from spending hundreds of dollars and time wasted on setting up the wrong antenna for your area. antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (Santa Clara to be exact). Upon doing the rescan, I have noticed that four of my local stations don’t come in clear with a homemade indoor antenna because (upon researching) these channels have low transmitter power by full-power standards (in kW) resulting in me having to buy an antenna booster; I’m 45 miles S-SE from the main transmitter (Sutro Tower; San Bruno Mountain is secondary). Would buying an antenna amplifier generally help boost TV stations that are less than 100 kW, especially those transmitting on the VHF band?
What matters is the signal that is at your antenna. Think of the transmitter like a light bulb. As you move away from a light, the brightness falls as the square of distance. (when you double distance signal falls by a factor of 4)
Just to add to the confusion, signal strengths at antennas are given in "dB". "dB" tends to confuse the newcomers so here is a quick run down.
If someone says 3dB or -3dB it means the power dropped by 1/2
If someone says 6dB the power dropped by 1/2 and then 1/2 of that so it is 1/4th
... and so on for each step of 3
On a calculator or using a spreadsheet 10^(6/10) = 3,98 so 1/4 is good enough
Boosters tend to have 12dB of gain AKA a factor of about 16
10^(30/10) = 1000
Thus, yes it is quite likely a booster will help but even better may be moving the antenna up and pointing it so you start with a better signal.
every dvt european websites have reception coverage map but not simple can i have and best dvt coverage map
Antenna web list wrong RF channels for some listing in my market (Raleigh). i stick to rabbit ears
Do you have glue on your hands? :) :) :)

Can’t get this web site ur talking about to work at all
So I couldn't find one station I am getting here on either antenna web or rabbitears, in Roswell NM we get 15.1 which is MeTV this doesn't seem to show up on any of the lists. I was hoping to find it on here to see if StarTV/StartTV would be transmitting from the same tower. MeTV has been having commercials about it saying its channel 15.2 but we can never get it...

do u have european antenna man web
Where I live it is currently 1972.
what is the best uhf only antenna i'm in a bad area but i may get one anyway just to see if i can pick them up.
My first try would be to go to the thrift shop and get some rabbit ears if they have them or just take a length of wire and hang it off the end of a coax. You may discover you get stations on just that. If you don't the experiment didn't cost much.
cm 4228 might work for you, buy it from someplace like home depot if it doesnt work you can return it, minimal set up
Is there a website that will list available channels for Canadian addresses ? TV Fool used to.
Tvfool is the only one I know of but you'd have to double check to make sure the tv station didn't move frequencies or go off the air. I heard some analog repeaters are being shut down
Thank you !
Does the height matter
Just as surely as size matters.
I can't tell if you're being genuine or sarcastic about that "amazing great product" plug at the top of the video.
We have a local TV station here that's only four miles away and you still need an amp to pick that bastard up
How to find an antenna installer in northern Ohio?
Google!
Antenna web doesn't show all the channels I get. I like to use rabbitears.info
do you get Scranton wb38 and ion 64 in your location?
No because they are lower powered and have lower antenna heights compared to the main stations.
@@AntennaMan I get them all the way in Bloomsburg. That's why i was wondering. No amplification but only 60% signal on my HDHOMERUN. Keep up the good work.
My location say best reception channels are at 124 degrees. How can I know where is 124 degrees from my location?
Find the exact location of the tower on fcc.gov plug that into Google maps. Switch to satellite view right click on the tower and select measure distance then click on the spot on your house where your antenna will be. You will get a line showing exactly where to point your antenna.
@@Atis602 Thank You very much.
Ever hear of a compass?????
124* Is East-Southeast of your home. 90 being directly East, and 180 being directly South.

according to all these sites i should not get any channels. i can usually get WICU12 out of erie pa with just a small 1/4 wave yagi. so whats a guy to do its vhf there are a bunch of others out of erie on uhf. its like playing russian roulette trying to find one that will work. i have watched them in the past but not reliably
If your antenna is also UHF capable, and its pointed in right direction, then you should be able to up the Erie UHF's if they are strong enough. Try a rescan after dark or early in the morning as some signals weaken during daylight hours. Also have you tried the otadtv.com website. They are by far the most accurate for my location.

Try placing your antenna as high as you can near the front window in your living room.
Antennaweb.org is useless in my area (88310)!!!!!!!! There are nearby repeater stations that I can watch, but antennaweb.org lists unreceivable stations from another market. IF my antennae brings one of the distant stations i.e. CH 7 it blocks the CH 7 from my local market. Maybe it works for you, but not in my remote desert area. BTW: I use those flat indoor antennas you say not to use because I am disabled and cannot install outdoor or attic antennas and there is no one qualified to install and signal test an antenna in my remote area. Handymen are not qualified!!!
