This video is around 2 hours and 20 mins long. We start talking about Metallica around the 25 minute mark and start listening to music around the 42 minute mark!
Patrick, you mentioned the first song they played after St.Anger was Just A Bullet Away. Actually it was "Death Is Not The End" which ended up being parts to "End Of The Line" and All Nightmare Long" on Death Magnetic..ua-cam.com/video/5k92R7IVbDs/v-deo.htmlsi=YSjiONNmXjBosDgY
if you enjoy the 80's metallica sound, or find that you enjoy Megadeth. You really need to check out Municipal Waste: The Art of Partying. Best 80's style riffs in the the 2000's.
That solo in Just a Bullet Away is DEFINITELY a James Hetfield solo (1:06:55). You can tell because the note selection isn't so "pentatonic" and the phrasing is delicious.
Theres also way less tapping/pulloffs/hammerons. Its always cool to hear james solos, theyre so different than kirks which makes it feel more refreshing in some songs
The band stated the following about the EP During the Death Magnetic album sessions in 2007 and 2008, we originally recorded 14 songs. When it came time to pick the songs for the final album, we decided on 10 songs that you've all come to know over the last three years... Some of you may have heard bits and pieces of those other songs on 'Mission Metallica' (remember 'Mission Metallica'?!) or heard rumors about them during the recording process, and wondered, 'What ever happened to those other four songs???.' We kept them in the vault and decided to pull them just for this special celebration, so here are the four leftover tracks from the Death Magnetic sessions. They are ROUGH mixes, unfinished to their original degree of mixing from March '08. These four songs were released as a gift to our closest fans, the members of our Fan Club, to enjoy. Now they're being made available to you.
I think this is the most important thing they should have brought up in the video. These are good songs but they are unfinished, Metallica considers them to be rough mixes and not finished products.
Fun fact: The Flamingo main riff is from a song Metallica was writing in 2001 called Shadows of the Cross. You can find it on UA-cam. It has an Enter Sandman-type build-up into the main groove. They used it for the demo for Flamingo, and then ultimately changed it and sped it up for All Nightmare Long!
I don't know which riff your specifically referring to, but on Making Magnetic, it shows Rob playing flamenco guitar and how that inspired the chorus riff... pretty sure it's the chorus riff.😂 If you find that vid, post the link.
@@deadwaitsoldiers ua-cam.com/video/C93DsemG06g/v-deo.htmlsi=cjgV-NFI_SUlyr46 I'm not sure if the link will work but check this song out. It was written during their time at the Presidio. There's a build up in the intro and then you'll recognize the main riff! It's slower than Flamingo but it's still the same riff. Rob did indeed write riffs that were used around the riff they took from Shadows of the Cross though.

There’s something about the guitar tone, especially on the ‘85 demos that are better than the album. The lo-fi aspect of it is somehow MORE metal. Maybe not as far sound quality, but there’s a weight and rough edge that is very intriguing.

1:32:11 mannnn the lyrics in Rebel are pretty profound metaphors imo. "Go take your poison ink, sign life away, then take your dirty spoon, and dig your grave" that line is true art/poetry.
The bits that they should have kept were at 1:49:42 , 1:49:53 , 1:53:54 - These bits were removed on the final take that shouldn't have been removed imo...fyi, It was called Flamingo as a working title because one day (this was captured in a video as well) Robert cam into the studio and played a flamenco style guitar riff on an acoustic/flamenco guitar and this song evolved from that!
A contributing fact: Patrick was making a reference that Just A Bullet Away was the first new material that Metallica debuted in 2006. He's not wrong that Metallica started teasing new material and songs (they were two) but those references are not found in Beyong Magnetic. The first song they debuted, I think around June 2006, was with "The New Song (Death Is Not The End)". You can find pieces of that song in The End Of The Line and All Nightmare Long (actually the intro is a copy paste section for The End Of The Line and the solo and the outro riff before the last chorus is exactly also from All Nightmare Long). The second song "The Other New Song (Vulturous)" is much more energetic and in my opinion the best of the two. But that material has never debuted on an official recording or demo. A shame because Metallica does reference this song in their band merch (there is a logo that is called Vulturous).
This is up my alley. I personally like the fact that this is more like a podcast with music in the background. I don't think I'm alone here. (If you want to hear an album uninterrupted then go listen to it. And if you want to see a straight up reaction there are plenty of channels that do that) I don't know why it took me so long to subscribe seeing as how I've been watching a different video everyday of yours sometimes 2. These are rough mixes. That is why they sound like this. They released one song per night during the 30 years celebration. They played a song per night and shared it the same night with metclub members
Another fun fact: For the Master of Puppets demo, the space that Chris was shocked by right before the verse riff kicks in; the guys in the band wanted Kirk to just hit a really high wailing note but he decided against it and he played something more rhythmically, which stayed on the album!
I got into Metallica heavily by the end of 2011. I had known some of their songs from childhood thanks to my father and half-brother before then, but my own exploration started back then. In December 2011 Metallica held four anniversary shows where they live-debuted all the four songs from Beyond Magnetic. I listened to the studio versions online, but given the fact that I’m from Russia - we didn’t have any streaming services back then. Couple months later, to my very sudden surprise I saw Beyond Magnetic in a local record shop. Instantly grabbed it. Hate Train grew on me momentarily, I still like it a lot. Later that year, in spring and summer 2012 they played Hell and Back and it also caused a big interest. This was basically the first new Metallica music I got to witness being a fan already, so it will always hold a special place in my mind and in my heart even if I don’t listen to it a lot these days. Anyway, the point of me writing it all is just to say thank you for bringing all these memories up - and same for all other albums of Metallica (and DM’s Memento Mori). Good luck with all else and looking forward to Hardwired, S&M, Garage Inc. and stuff outside Metallica - maybe bands like Hurts or something from AiC apart from popular stuff like Dirt or Live Spirits by Depeche. All the best!

Awesome video, I'd recommend reacting to Presidio, which is basically the demos of St. Anger that were recorded before James went to therapy. Everything was cut from it and only one of the riffs from the demo was used later which was in Flamingo. Hope you do it someday cause it's such a cool part of Metallica's history
Would love to see some Architects reactions, they probably one of the best sounding bands out there, could be interesting to see the point from the audio engineers. Great content, I´ve seen all your music related videos.
The solo in Just a Bullet Away is James. Love when he does solos. Also, the main riff in Rebel of Babylon is top tier imo. Hits hard. Also, Flamingo has major Load vibes imo in regards to the main riff, and idk if you noticed but the solo had no wah!
Yep! The easy way to tell is listen to any Kirk solo, its more melodic and has the typical metal solo technique. James on the other hand has "choppier" solos, like this song, Whiskey in the Jar, Suicide & Redemptions first solo before Kirk's wah, Nothing Else Matters, etc. @@yorkiboy735
I only gonna say after watching some of your videos is great to see the guy on the left smiling and enjoying this that means at the end loads are not bad 🤣🤣🤣🤣 great reaction
I have to defend Lars here: I know i know, he's not considered a great drummer. The thing i like most about Lars Ulrich's drumming is that in many of Metallica's songs it fits so good with what the rest of the instruments are playing. That is a quality that seems often overlooked and not found in many metal bands in my opinion. (I'm a drummer myself and as kid i tried to imitate Lars Ulrich's drumming, bought his sticks and so on^^)
Otherwise, Harwired actually has 3 cds :D Disc 3 of the deluxe edition includes a bonus track "Lords Of Summer", a cover by Deep Purple and Iron Maiden, Ronnie Rising Medley and a few live songs
Just a bullet away isn't the first song metallica released after st anger, the song is called "The New Song" by the band and is called "Death is Not the End" by the fans, it has parts from "The End Of The Line" and "All Nightmare Long", there is also another song called "The Other New Song", or "Vulturous", both are good songs that you shuld lissen to if you are interested in Death Magnetic demos. And the first diferent riff that you guys noticed on the "Flamingo" demo is the same riff as the final song but faster, it is from a song called " Shadows of The Cross", this song is a St. Anger demo that was never released, and they reused it in Death Magnetic. There is also a "Presidio Album" that contains some demos from St. Anger, if you are going to dive into this demos world, that would be awsome to see you guys hearing to that. Nice video as always ;)
This is my favorite reaction you guys have done. I think I’ve actually watched it about 10 times by now. There is a complete album on UA-cam called Demo Magnetic. It’s just like it sounds. It’s all of the demos for all of the songs from Death Magnetic lined up in album form. There are a lot of gems in there. Would love to see you guys react to that. ❤
all nightmare long and many from death magnetic are in my top 10 at least. it really all depends on your mood for the day/week. favorite metallica album changes all the time lol. also beyond magnetic definitely doesnt fit in the main album but its totally awesome as its own EP, completely.
All Nightmare Long is the song that has a part from the song played in 2006 called "The New Song." The part after the solos. Just a Bullet Away is the song James wanted on the album over the Unforgiven III. He was out voted.
'Just a Bullet Away' is one of my all-time favorite Metallica songs, & while it's kindov a mess 'Rebel of Babylon' has some of the most savage riffing that they've laid down in years. Always loved this little EP. Great to see you gents give it a deeper listen.
1:34:15 Riff salad is perfectly fine with good ingredients, y'know... nice and crunchy here, little spicy there, some tanginess, just the right 'pop'. Yup, that's good salad.
Just a Bullet Away is its own thing. Metallica began playing "The New Song," then "Vulturous" a couple of years before DM's release. I wouldn't swear to it, but I don't believe any parts of "Vulturous" made it to the album. "The New Song," however, is represented in the intro and a transition bit during the solo of "The End of the Line"; as well as during the final breakdown before the final chorus in "All Nightmare Long."
Watching this back again, I think it'd be so damn cool if you guys listened to the entirety of Demo Magnetic as there's so many changes for the better and for the worse!
At the time we weren't considering it, and since then I have listened to almost the whole thing! I burned a disc of the entire album and have almost listened all the way through it multiple times!
@PatrickMusilek Oh that's amazing! You should definitely do a reaction video. Wouldn't it be the first Metallica reaction where you've heard something that the 2 Chris' haven't heard?
I am here first and foremost, to apologize for my absence of the premier of this very video. I am, undoubtedly feeling guilt, remorse and self hatred for missing the premier. I, hereby, announce this mistake, WILL NOT happen again. And if it does happen, I am ready to face any penalties, or consequences you, Patrick, Present Chris, and Remote Chris, decide I should face. I am ashamed of my actions. And will live the rest of my life, knowing of the harm I caused in this world. K.D.R
In flamingo i think its in standard tuning, or half step down, the finished version all nightmare long is in Dropped D, that why it fits the title all nightmare long and the darker subject matter
I still really hope you guys check out The New Song (Death is not the end) considering it’s a major part of this era and kinda ties 2000s era Metallica together
I wish they played these in their shows. i dont think they've played them outside of the 30th anniversary shows. I especially like Hate Train and Just a Bullet Away. If i recall they said these were part of DM except they couldnt fit them on the release so they cut them and didnt complete production on them. Plus James does the solo on JABA which we get rarely get.
Note: Hardwired isn't a double album. It's the same length as the other recent Metallica albums, 77 mins. It's split over 2 discs for other reasons apparently.
@@PatrickMusilek Yeah, I'm kinda hoping you guys can shed some light on that, as one explanation was that not squeezing it onto one disc (not compressing it as much or something?) means the sound quality is better..? Another, more cynical theory was that it virtually guaranteed them hitting the top of the charts as a 'double album' counts as selling 2 CDs, but surely that's not the reason.. P.S. another interesting thing about Hardwired; Lars was still deciding on the running order and gave one to the record company for the vinyl pressing to get started, but then changed his mind so the running order on the CD version is his final, preferred one.
We need a name for the face that Chris on the left is making. That pained anguish look on some parts of these songs is hilarious. It’s like the opposite of stank face you get on a brutal riff.
I was just wondering what if you guys listened to flamingo. I have some ideas about guys on UA-cam remaking newer Metallica songs in the style of different album's tones of the past, justice and black album in particular and then using AI to recreate James 88 voice. Its a rabbit hole to go down. Can recommend some songs to start with
hey, this came up in my recommended and i really enjoyed it! gonna check out more from you guys. if you haven't already, i think you'd have fun checking out weezer's album pinkerton, especially since that was self produced by the singer, rivers.
You forgot to listen live versions of "The New Song" (parent of "All Nightmare Long"/"The End Of The Line") and "The Other New song" - the songs that band played before "Death Magnetic" was released
Regarding the demos- James usually writes & records the placeholder solos as well. Also, he hums gibberish for the "lyrics" in at least half of their demos. As in random sounds and syllables, not just half-baked lyrics lol. For example, the lyrics during the machine gun riff in One are WANNA NA NA, WANNA NA NA, WANNA NA NA NA NAAAAAA
The main riff in All Nightmare Long/Flamingo is a repurposed riff from the St Anger era Presidio Sessions song Shadows of the Cross. You should check out those clips on UA-cam. Cant wait for the Hardwired reaction, which i personally love and prefer to Death Magnetic.
That flamenco riff is the one Robert played on acoustic guitar,,Roberts father was a flamenco guitar player,,the video of Robert playing the riff is on UA-cam
Regarding the reviews of DM. You guys have to understand, after Jason leaving, James into rehab, St. Anger, and then radio silence for YEARS, people were RELIEVED that (a) it came out, and (b) sounded like actual Metallica for the first time since the early 90s. The discussion about loudness wars, Rush's Vapor Trails, Death Magnetic, etc. happened a bit later. But this was a "Oh gosh, Metallica is back, thank god, I thought they were gone for life.". Perspective is HUGE here.
The blond guitarist of Sabaton is maybe the best vocalist we have in "modern Metal" and he only does the back vocals on Sabaton concerts. Tommy Johansson is his name he's doing awsome covers and Disney versions of Sabaton and some 80s hair metal here and there
Just listened to Beyond Magnetic a few days ago before I saw this and man I think those songs are underrated such as Hate Train and Hell and Back. I would personally would like y’all to do Hardwired next. I would like to ask too if when y’all do S&M are y’all just doing S&M or also S&M2. I personally liked the original better production wise but there were some songs from Death Magnetic and Hardwired that are in S&M2 that sound cool with the symphony
When you do I Disappear, I suggest also reacting to the leaked version. That's what kicked off the whole Napster debacle, and its arrangement is different than the final release. Copies of when it aired on radio before release are still kicking around UA-cam, and Metallica put it out officially just recently on a special vinyl. Can find that easily here by searching "Metallica: I Disappear (Leaked Napster Version) [Vinyl - 2021]"
Megadeth was chosen 100% because of the rivalry and past with metallica, and to get Patrick's reaction and contrast with metallica. Beyond Magnetic to me, sounds weird as well. And like in Death Magnetic (itunes), James sounds weird, and for whatever reason, it annoys me too much. its kinda "hidden". Its weird. I agree with Remote Chris, that even though, the songs are good, it doesnt feel right. And I don't know why. Flamingo sounds like if all nightmare long was a st anger song. For one, is the lower tuning compared to nightmare, and one of the riffs is very similar to a riff from a demo from st anger itself.
The St. Anger comparison is great! And I am excited to hear Megadeth now more than ever just because of all the talk about them related to Metallica! Both Chrises laugh at them, but Remote Chris does legit like some of their albums.
@@PatrickMusilek I have listened up until countdown to extinction. So I'm not a huuuge fan of them. Rust in peace is definitely their best album i've heard from them. Now, I hate dave mustaine's singing, and I think youre going to hate it as well!
I didn't see the poll before this video, but I'd love to see Iron Maiden and Megadeth Reactions! my favourite two bands, both have some of the most consistent (not perfect) discographies in metal. However, you've got to realize that Dave Mustaine is a guitarist and song writer first and second. He was thrown into singing because they couldn't find a better singer (plus he wrote the lyrics. Despite the fact that his vocals aren't great, he writes his songs to match and fit to his vocals. Also, y'all should check out Ahdy Kahiart he makes amazing remaster/ remixes of Metallica and other bands. Some of the best masters i've heard.
Gotta listen to the new song. They only played it in concerts before death magnetic. It’s called New Song. It was split up to create all nightmare long and The end of the Line. There is also a making of for every song on death magnetic that shows you how all the songs were crafted and changed. It’s really awesome. Someone put them all together back to back. Same thing with Hardwired.
Please react to the “Making of Death Magnetic” documentary! You guys would definitely appreciate getting a glimpse into the behind the scenes production and Metallica’s thought process while making an album.
Metallica doesn’t give that control to anyone. There’s a video of them choosing the sequencing for the album. Also, fuck Rick Rubin. He’s the reason for the album being the poster child for the Loudness Wars. He did it to Black Sabbath’s ‘13’, too.
I'm so looking forward to the Hardwired To Self Destruct reaction. I'm actually way more interested to hearing the feedback on the lesser praised songs, like "Here Come Revenge" and "Am I Savage?" Of course, I'm waiting for Patrick's head to explode to "Spit Out the Bone". Song is literally S-tier Metallica
If you guys wanna know the origon of that riff listen to shadow of the cross thats where the riff comes from its on the presdio album the demo (sort of) its more slower ish but slaps but if it intrests you guys more you can listen to the whole album of what st anger was origionally aupposed to sound like

The slower tempo of Flamingo slaps so hard. Very conducive to stank face headbanging.

On demo magnetic, I think Casper is an awesome demo, James’ vocals are way different on the verses and really makes it impactful
The solo in Just a Bullet Away is James. Love when he does solos. Also, the main riff in Rebel of Babylon is top tier imo. Hits hard. Also, Flamingo has major Load vibes imo in regards to the main riff, and idk if you noticed but the solo had no wah!
I was wondering if the Bullet Away Solo was James‘! Didnt really sound like kirk
(I'm a drummer myself and as kid i tried to imitate Lars Ulrich's drumming, bought his sticks and so on^^)
For sure, James has talked about this before, Lars definitely does different shit than a lot if metal drummers
You have to do Lulu in one go. It's such a daunting task of an album to listen to that it needs to be experienced that way.
Are you sure? I remember reading that James fought hard to get Unforgiven III on the record.
@gregfalc I think it was reversed. The rest of the band wanted Just a Bullet a Away over the Unforgiven III.
Much better raw sound, dynamics and production on these recording than on actual album.
I can't argue with that!
I can’t wait for y’all reaction to hardwired!!!
LOVED the Abed reference. Cool cool cool.
Never realized that the bit of flamingo idea made it to the actual song
The demo for Nightmare is such a reminder that as good as DM was, Rick Rubin not allowing any vocal harmonies was a major misstep.
if you guys react to hardwired, you should also add in the bonus cover tracks they did
Rebel of Babylon was written for Layne Staley from Alice in Chains who had passed away in 2002
The lyrics "he takes his dirty spoon, and digs his grave" remind me of "man in the box" from aic
Interesting!
That's still a double album.
@@TrevRockOne You don't know 'album' means in that case.
We need a name for the face that Chris on the left is making. That pained anguish look on some parts of these songs is hilarious. It’s like the opposite of stank face you get on a brutal riff.
I was waiting for This video … good dammit
Read the cd booklet. It’s says something like “somewhat mastered”
I was just wondering what if you guys listened to flamingo. I have some ideas about guys on UA-cam remaking newer Metallica songs in the style of different album's tones of the past, justice and black album in particular and then using AI to recreate James 88 voice. Its a rabbit hole to go down. Can recommend some songs to start with
hell and back has such a master or puppets feel and its good that they could literally just play what they wanted and had good feedback.
hey, this came up in my recommended and i really enjoyed it! gonna check out more from you guys. if you haven't already, i think you'd have fun checking out weezer's album pinkerton, especially since that was self produced by the singer, rivers.
yes please listen to Lulu first, then the rest of the Death Magnetic demos (Demo Magnetic) and then Hardwired... to Self-Destruct if possible
You forgot to listen live versions of "The New Song" (parent of "All Nightmare Long"/"The End Of The Line") and "The Other New song" - the songs that band played before "Death Magnetic" was released
hell and back is one of my favourite metallica songs
Patrick is really going to like Hardwired. Its like DM but with more concise songwriting and much better production.
Fun fact, the solo from Just a bullet away was played for James
Flamingo and all nightmare long came from St. Anger from a song called shadow of the cross. Did make st. Anger. It became all nightmare long
the hype is real
The main riff in All Nightmare Long/Flamingo is a repurposed riff from the St Anger era Presidio Sessions song Shadows of the Cross. You should check out those clips on UA-cam.
Cant wait for the Hardwired reaction, which i personally love and prefer to Death Magnetic.
Master of puppets was played by Ty Trujillo.
James plays the solo on "Just A Bullet Away!"
That flamenco riff is the one Robert played on acoustic guitar,,Roberts father was a flamenco guitar player,,the video of Robert playing the riff is on UA-cam
Wish you guys would argue more. It's entertaining! ;-)
Tommy Johansson is his name he's doing awsome covers and Disney versions of Sabaton and some 80s hair metal here and there
Hardwired first, then Lulu.
I can’t wait
I really want to see that s&m reaction. Two brand new songs that come with that album so yeah its a great listen
Funny enough, all those song been played “live” before they released. A couple of them even multiple times.
Beyond Magnetic is great tbh
“Rebel of Babylon” is about Layne Staley.
You guys should do the presido album.
"Death is not the end" - it's THE song!
"...It's just the next great adventure."
- Dumbledore
01:35:25 That was actually about the song before
If they would rearrange and rerecord Just A Bullet Away with a good production, it would be so awesome
I cant wait for garage inc!!!
It really sounds like a demo. It seems i am listening behind a wall.
DM is a Rick Rubin album, which I believe means he decides what goes on the album and what doesn't. He rarely gets it wrong.
HARDWIRED.. TO SELF-DESTRUCT NEXT!!!
You see most UA-camrs have to get payed to do hello fresh commercials, Patrick does them for free 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you guys wanna know the origon of that riff listen to shadow of the cross thats where the riff comes from its on the presdio album the demo (sort of) its more slower ish but slaps but if it intrests you guys more you can listen to the whole album of what st anger was origionally aupposed to sound like
I think one of the main reasons that Hate Train did not make the album is the obvious similarity of the main riff to Fuel.
