Know Your Knotweed: Part 1 - The Good

  • This is Dr Paul Beckett from Phlorum.com the Japanese knotweed specialists, doing a presentation on knotweeds 'The Good, The Bad, and The Fugly, which will run as a 3-part series. The purpose of this presentation is to give a broad overview of some knotweed species, varieties, and related plants that you might not be aware of if you're a professional gardener interested in knotweeds. I want to show you that there are some knotweeds out there that are pretty good!

    • Fleece Flower (Persicaria polymorpha)
    • Lesser Knotweed (Persicaria campanulata)
    • Kiss Me Over The Garden Gate (Persicaria orientalis)
    • Red Bistort (Persicaria amplexicaulis)
    • Persicaria Microcephala (small-headed knotweed)
    • Red Dragon Knotweed (Persicaria microcephala 'Red Dragon')

    I am growing several of these in my garden - the red bistort and red dragon knotweed my favourites! Looking forward to part 2 and part 3! Thanks Paul

    Is this information specific to a certain region? I'm wondering if there are others that look like Japanese knotweed but also may be "the good ones" near Toronto, Canada

      Hi Hez. Yes, in Canada I'm sure you'll get other Polygonaceae species that look similar to knotweed. Also, as our climates aren't too different, you'll probably get many of the same species of garden plants as we get in the UK that are discussed in the video, .

      @@Phlorum I can confirm we have Kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate in Toronto, because I just collected seeds from a flower growing wild
