There is a theory that the deck(s) you choose to play can reveal parts of your personality. My impression of Reid is that he brings excellent gameplay, a professional demeanor, and a great deal of information about his internal thought process while not necessarily bringing a lot of humor, promotions, or gimmicks. Look over to his decks, being Jund and Mardu. Both decks have very low fail rates with ruthlessly efficient spells from top to bottom, but don't provide huge wombo combos that get you on a highlight reel. Pretty similar to Reid himself. Overall impression: When the cake itself is excellent, you don't need very much icing at all.
Speaking for myself personally when I played a few years back I played against a lot of different pros at GPs and Events and I have to say that Reid was the only down to earth guy who didn't have an inflated ego. Best pro on the circuit.
That game 1 versus tron has literally been every game I’ve ever played against a tron player. Carefully navigate every option and unga bunga draw natty tron anyway. Props for not tilting out in that situation.
Dude I totally forgot how much I thought Reid sounded like Christian Bale when I first watched his videos. I'm so used to his voice now that I don't notice anymore.
Wow. Early in the first game there were a couple interesting decisions that really rewarded Reid's mastery. This is the new Jund I guess. Scratch out some advantage in the early game with disruption and crush with a Bedlam Reveler.
58:35 - I always go for the non towers. The reason is, if my tron opponent has 2 out of 3 tron pieces in play, digs / search for the last piece, I don't want it to be a tower, entering and giving 3 mana; I want it to be a non tower, tapping for 2. If my opponent searched up the tower, and I dont know what its her hand, then sure, I'll go for the tower.
At around 5:20 Thoughtsieze was a good choice. If he slams goyf, you lily it, if he plays any threat really you lily it. Otherwise you have full control with your kommands and souls in the grave
You don't want too many lands that don't produce red though. Red is the color you want the most for your explosive turns where you're going Reveler into other spells.
Jack Buttery That's an argument to drop LOTV, if anything. With Liliana, you're looking to play longer games and that means you want to cast the front face of Lingering Souls *and* a double black spell and that can be hard if you're always fetching red mana.
I've played the deck quite a bit by now and even without Liliana I often find myself wanting to fetch for Godless Shrine, but only have Sacred Foundry. My only RR card is Reveler and tbh it's easy to find RR by the time you want to cast it, with all the looting. Your primary concern is finding the first red on turn one consistently for Faithless Looting. But finding black for discard spells can be equally important. So it doesn't make sense to play the 17R/16B split in the most common configuration. Reid even forgoes the basic plains for the 18th red source. Plains seems important though if you want to play white sb cards under a Blood Moon. So you are absolutely right imo.
I think you discard mountain and lingering souls, because we want to flash it back next turn anyway and that gives us two turns to draw a land and then we have three three-drops with K-Com, Liliana, and faithless looting.
1:18:04 Isn't taking Emrakul just better? I know she gets shuffled so the opponent is more likely to draw her, but they have a Snapcaster, so they can eventually snap back Breach or just a Cryptic or Izzet Charm or whatever they want. I'd rather turn off their Snapcaster.
wraith I was gonna say the same thing. I think taking the enabler is better when they're trying to break through the breach, but this is a control deck really, and both halves kinda seem exactly the same
I think both lines are pretty close. If he takes Emrakul, the guy shuffles and natural draws it he loses. If he takes breach, snapcaster can't flash it back til turn 7 so maybe he draws more disruption or closes out the game. Then again, if he just naturals breach after it's been taken, he's in the same boat. + shuffling in Emrakul with the whole graveyard makes the top deck even less likely. Maybe taking Emrakul gives him a few more % chance to win, but again, the lines are pretty close I feel.
Taking TTB buys a few extra turns that can draw into disrupt or close out the game. If he took snaps and the opponent topdecks land to cast TTB, that's game over.
@4:57 I would’ve discarded Liliana instead of thoughtseize, because we know the opp has abrupt decay, but you didn’t get punished the way that game played out. The way you really get punished is if your opponent doesn’t play a threat for you to minus on, so you plus, they decay in response, and you have to decide between discarding land 3 or k command.
4:53 I would've discarded the thoughtseize too. Unless opp drew something relevant that turn you're paying 2 life to trade 1 for 1 with a redundant decay, which doesn't sound appealing in a grindy matchup.
Went from jund to this, no regrets. Just don't know if explosives or e-bridge is better for sb... Also more 1 godless shrine, and fetches seems better than cliffs so far.
I think at 7:03 you should have chosen discard and return Young Pyro to your hand. It would have set up your next few turns a lot nicer. (Just saw people were saying this also)
Around 1:18:00 why take through the breach over emrakul? emrakul shuffle turns off snapcaster for cantrips or remand and if you hadn't won they could have snap - through the breached when they found the lands. Just curious if theres something I'm overlooking or if you just knew you were going to win before either were relevant
Hey Reid, do you think that discarding pyromancer and then waiting for your opponent to crack map to k command in response with modes discard and raise dead would have been a better play at 1:00:45, since they won't have Tron next turn?
at 19:00, why not discard one molten rain and the reveler? The molten rains seemed to have a higher impact at that point with your opponent on such a low life total.
what was your reason for sending in young pyromancer to attack into the hangarback walker match 2 game 1? and then again the next game? it seemed like you could still get some more value out of him.
I believe it's about assessing costs of trade, and it was worth it with the hangerback. Otherwise it would quickly grow and either be a big threat itself or make a lot of flying tokens.
You don't cut discard after sideboard with this deck. You need to be proactive. Opportunity cost of drawing a discard spell in the late game is usually small. And you don't wanna sit there with all the reactive sideboard cards and 2 revelers not doing anything. You are not a control deck. That is a recipe for losing with this deck.
*Watches one of the top ranked MTG pros in the world 5-0 a league - criticizes sb decision making and explains to him how he should play the deck in the comments* Oh UA-cam, never change.
Dude....Reid...you need a new PC. I listen to the videos in over ear headphones and can hear your machine screaming when you make plays. Just an FYI before it starts smoking. Great job in the league!
G1, I would have pitched the 2nd kommand to the looting over the seize. The entire objective with mardu is trade aggressively then slam reveler to get ahead. 1 mana discard in the early turns is the best way to do that. Velocity should be valued highly. Kommand doesnt shine until the late game when it can buyback a peezy or reveler and do another thing. Early game it's slow, takes your entire t3, doesnt affect the board a good % of the time, and majority of the time you cant even convert it to 2 cards. Making your opponent discard their worst card and shocking a thing for 3 mana is not exciting.
I don't think they could have won, even if they presciently held the cryptic for the thoughtseize. They were at 9 at the start of the turn, taking 4 from the attack puts them at 5. Two Kambal triggers from the Cryptic and the Breach would put the opponent at 1, and put Reid at 16. Emrakul puts Reid down to 1, but he has 7 permanents, can keep the Kambal in play after annihilator and Reid wins on the crackback.
I really love your videos Reid, but you really need a new microphone. I suffer from tinnitus and cuz of the sound issue I can't watch for extended periods of time. All the Best!
@sstadnicki: Terminate is certainly the better card in this deck, with only 2 non-red mana sources. But I am wondering about a deck like Jund though, where you're playing Treetop Villages and Overgrown Tombs and the red requirement on Terminate is a real liability compared to Cast Down.
Too many random good legendaries in Modern, e.g.: Tasigur, Thalia, Vendilion Clique. Go for the Throat is usually better as mono-black removal, unless you get matched against affinity.
The problem is that right now Hollow One is more played than any of the cards you mentioned, and that's a serious hole because Fatal Push and Bolt both miss it. I actually do think Cast Down might be the best of the 1B options in the current general metagame, but it's not clear that you want any of the 'sometimes dead' choices - Murderous Cut might be better than any of these depending on the shell it's going in.
because he wanted to tick up lili. if he grabbed young p he woulda just discarded it and if he did it before k command he woulda discarded k command. the real question is getting young p better than having 2 counters on lili.
Please consider investing in a better microphone, the cackling from your microphone was very distracting. Spend more than 50 dollars on one, and buy a stand that keeps it as close to your voice as possible so we don't pick up one everything else in the room. I recommend a cheap audio interface paired with a Berhinger B-1. It'll be around $100 if you shop around, but the audio quality is very well worth it.
You do realize that you can't turn down the scratching sound without making you unable to hear Reid? A new microphone, even a basic one costs about $15. Why wouldn't CFB just get him a new microphone so we can focus on the gameplay. The "I'm so much better than these crybabies" attitude just seems silly when the problem can be fixed so easily.
Reid on modern? You better believe I SMASHED that like button.
There is a theory that the deck(s) you choose to play can reveal parts of your personality. Brian Braun Duin is also a really cool guy, the down to earth ones are out there they just are the minority.
"GOTTA THOUGHTSEIZE THAT ULAMOG AT ALL COSTS"
the thought running through every single non-tron player
That game 1 versus tron has literally been every game I’ve ever played against a tron player. Carefully navigate every option and unga bunga draw natty tron anyway. Props for not tilting out in that situation.
*sees video series of Reid playing mid-range in modern*
*smashes that mfin like button*
RIP this deck and many other fair decks that relied on Looting for value rather than unfair plays.
Yesss, finally. Been waiting to see Reid play this deck for ages.
It's so cool Christian Bale plays magic. I just can't believe it.
Julian Belkin source??
lmao
Dude I totally forgot how much I thought Reid sounded like Christian Bale when I first watched his videos. I'm so used to his voice now that I don't notice anymore.
"I’m whatever Gotham needs me to be." - Batman
He's the hero we deserve to need... to deserve... because its TIME... to deserve... a hero... for gotham
Wow. Early in the first game there were a couple interesting decisions that really rewarded Reid's mastery. This is the new Jund I guess. Scratch out some advantage in the early game with disruption and crush with a Bedlam Reveler.
Reid played that last match super well. Love watching pros do their thing.
This is definitely my favourite competetive modern deck
Great job ! The deck is good and you played it very well, thanks for the videos
I'm a simple man. I see Reid Duke, I hit like, I watch the video.
I have a Tron friend who told me the same thing.
Reid your videos are always dope. Thanks for the content!
I’m sorry for being an idiot but I chuckle like a schoolboy every time he says “cumball”.
Thanks Reid. I play the same deck so helpful all around
When its Reid I hit like before the video even loads.
Great content! Reid Duke is great.
This was a great video. Seems like a very viable option.
Woah woah Reid, if they won't stay to learn from the Duke then they are tripping.
At around 5:20 Thoughtsieze was a good choice. If he slams goyf, you lily it, if he plays any threat really you lily it. Otherwise you have full control with your kommands and souls in the grave
It feels like this deck needs at least 1 godless shrine. Seems like there were a few points where it would've been useful
usually so few cards with white mana, deck usually only runs 1 sacred foundry. reid does have more than an usual amount of white cards in the board

Reid what are your thoughts on alpine moon?
How did Reid know his opponent would play a tarmogoyf? This is mastery, Liliana’s Mastery!
Unlucky for Zyrnak (Hardened Scales Deck). That dude is a good Affinity player.
I think you discard mountain and lingering souls, because we want to flash it back next turn anyway and that gives us two turns to draw a land and then we have three three-drops with K-Com, Liliana, and faithless looting.

This feels more like jund than jund does.
@4:57 I would’ve discarded Liliana instead of thoughtseize, because we know the opp has abrupt decay, but you didn’t get punished the way that game played out. The way you really get punished is if your opponent doesn’t play a threat for you to minus on, so you plus, they decay in response, and you have to decide between discarding land 3 or k command.
you can just not play liliana until the opp plays a threat
Last time I was this early Twin was still legal
"I hope there's not a Night of Souls' Betrayal in my future" hahaha
I love how his opponent immediately played a 4-mana Black enchantment after this, too. For a moment it got me...
4:53 I would've discarded the thoughtseize too. Unless opp drew something relevant that turn you're paying 2 life to trade 1 for 1 with a redundant decay, which doesn't sound appealing in a grindy matchup.
Although I love Seasoned Pyromancer, I miss the pre modern horizons era
Went from jund to this, no regrets. Just don't know if explosives or e-bridge is better for sb... Also more 1 godless shrine, and fetches seems better than cliffs so far.
Opponent didn't know difference between activated and triggered ability lmao
Would u change something of this list after playing? Is 2 Lilianas necessary or is one enough! Also do u think Rachet Bomb can replace EE?
Bedlam reveler seems like such a big game.
And yet, it dodges the Big Game Hunter ;) (unless prowess triggers).
huge fan reid!!
6:17 Abrupt Decay Lingering Souls art
I think at 7:03 you should have chosen discard and return Young Pyro to your hand. It would have set up your next few turns a lot nicer. (Just saw people were saying this also)
I think +1 on lilly + 2 dmg is more important than a pyro in hand
Have you have tried 1 or 2 Slaughtergames in the sideboard? It can really change certain matchups even with its 4 cmc
Hey Reid, why not try something crazy and mash the two decks together? Jund pyromancer could be pretty fun
is pack rat any good in a deck like this?
Nope too long to use it and you can't play mutavault
It's fine but lili, kolagans, blood moon, and souls are just all better 3 drops
Around 1:18:00 why take through the breach over emrakul? emrakul shuffle turns off snapcaster for cantrips or remand and if you hadn't won they could have snap - through the breached when they found the lands. Just curious if theres something I'm overlooking or if you just knew you were going to win before either were relevant
Sorry for being so drunk is Vegas Reid
Hey Reid, do you think that discarding pyromancer and then waiting for your opponent to crack map to k command in response with modes discard and raise dead would have been a better play at 1:00:45, since they won't have Tron next turn?
25:00 DOES this Deck operate on a single Mana??
at 19:00, why not discard one molten rain and the reveler? The molten rains seemed to have a higher impact at that point with your opponent on such a low life total.
Why Molten Rain, and not Fulminator Mage? Fulminator Mage can be returned with Liliana and can also be a threat in a pinch.
I'm guessing the burn is necessary for a faster clock.
what was your reason for sending in young pyromancer to attack into the hangarback walker match 2 game 1? and then again the next game? it seemed like you could still get some more value out of him.
I believe it's about assessing costs of trade, and it was worth it with the hangerback. Otherwise it would quickly grow and either be a big threat itself or make a lot of flying tokens.
I really like this deck, though as an infect player I really hate seeing it across from me.
As reid he kicks humans asses
As batman he saves them...
at 6mins why not k command and return young p instead of 2 to face
Using a pencil and paper to write down opponents hand when playing on a computer.
You don't cut discard after sideboard with this deck. You need to be proactive. Opportunity cost of drawing a discard spell in the late game is usually small. Bloodbraid gets unbanned. Jund still not great. Sadness goes onto the stack.
and bedlam reloads the hand.
Why bring in Kambal against tron? I'm not seeing how it's good.
I think curve issues/.
What's the reason for unmaking in sideboard?
For in case he runs into a finks or redcap. In current meta, against phoenix
Hello! What is the deck played by the opponent "Zyrnak" on round 3?
That would be Hardened Scales Affinity, cool deck. Zyrnak is actually a UA-cam content creator and makes great videos for that deck and others.
i see it zelous
Dude....Reid...you need a new PC. I listen to the videos in over ear headphones and can hear your machine screaming when you make plays. Just an FYI before it starts smoking. Great job in the league!

1:17:30 opp making the mistake of his life haha. could have won by keeping ccommand and countering thoughtseize
I don't think they could have won, even if they presciently held the cryptic for the thoughtseize. They were at 9 at the start of the turn, taking 4 from the attack puts them at 5. What do you think about the SB plan of goblin rabblemaster + hazoret to kill quickly in the non interactive matchups?
Not to be rude but these great videos could be made even better if that buzzing or scratching sound in the background is taken care of.
Running mardu colors and no Path to Exiles? Wtf???
Thats Neato probably same reason more bolt than push. In the matchups path and push are bad, lightning bolt can still go face.
I really love your videos Reid, but you really need a new microphone. I suffer from tinnitus and cuz of the sound issue I can't watch for extended periods of time. All the Best!
Blood Moon is great against Infect.
What was your finish in The most recent gp
TRAITOR!! Just kidding haha.
Would you ever consider playing Cast Down in Modern?
With both Fatal Push and Terminate as legal cards there's really no point.
Granted that it's very seldom going to be worse than Terminate, but I don't think it'll ever be substantially better either...
@sstadnicki: Terminate is certainly the better card in this deck, with only 2 non-red mana sources. But I am wondering about a deck like Jund though, where you're playing Treetop Villages and Overgrown Tombs and the red requirement on Terminate is a real liability compared to Cast Down.

duke or manfield .........put abzan back on the map.
in game 1 of the first match, why did you shock the opponent instead of getting back young pyromancer?
This^ like, what the fuck...there's a faithless in your yard...
because he wanted to tick up lili. if he grabbed young p he woulda just discarded it and if he did it before k command he woulda discarded k command. the real question is getting young p better than having 2 counters on lili.
Yes. it is.
not really. Especially since he top deck goyf. I agreed with the play
Rip looting
so when ur dead on gas and get a standard chainwhirler effect. Whats the recover plan?
Please consider investing in a better microphone, the cackling from your microphone was very distracting. Spend more than 50 dollars on one, and buy a stand that keeps it as close to your voice as possible so we don't pick up one everything else in the room.

i know, that scratching sound is sooo annoying, makes the video unwatchable to me.
LOL. Turn it down slightly? People these days are such babies.
You do realize that you can't turn down the scratching sound without making you unable to hear Reid? A new microphone, even a basic one costs about $15.
