    In Memory of 240656 Pte Herbert Clover Royal Sussex Regiment Killed in Action at the Battle of Passchendaele (3rd Battle of Ypres) 05 Oct 1917.
    Herbert Clover was born in July 1892 in Little Oakley, Essex, his father, William, was 30 and his mother, Eliza, was 26. At the outbreak of the First World War Herbert was 22 years old when he joined the Royal Sussex Regiment. Originally with the 4th Reserves 2713 Private Clover would have served with the Home Counties Division. Likley to be deployed to Gallipoli landing at Suvla Bay on 9th August 1915. He married Dorothy May Steer in January 1916 and they had one child Doris May who was born in April of that same year. At some point shortly after his marriage Hebert joined the 1/5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion with the Regimental Number 240656 under the command of 48th (South Midland) Division. The Division saw action at the battle of Albert where they held the line between the 56th and 31st Divisions both heavily engaged at Gommecourt and Serre on 1st July 1916. In 1917 the Germans retreated to the Hindenburg line where the Division occupied Peronne. As the battle of Passchendaele (3rd battle of Ypres) commenced on 31st July, Herbert saw action at the Battles of Langemarck, Polygon Wood and Broodseinde where he died of wounds sustained on 5 October 1917. He is buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetry in the West-Vlaanderen region in Belgium.
