  • Following our visits to Ludlow Castles and Stokesay Castle, we visited the remarkable Wigmore Castle. This castle was extremely different to the ones we previously visited. Wigmore castle is abandoned and in a great ruinous state. It dates back to around 1070, following the Norman Conquest of England and also has hosted many of England's greatest kings and queens. It has seen sieges, and battles through many different conflicts for example, The Wars of the Roses and The English Civil War. It has been involved in matters of royalty throughout the Tudor period and throughout medieval history.
Today it is abandoned even though under the guardianship of English Heritage and it is a remarkable castle. Much of the castle is ruined and demolished, however you can really see an excellent example of a Stone Keep/Motte and Bailey Castle if you visit. Join us as we visit England's Ruined Castle, Wigmore Castle in Shropshire.

I need to visit! Just traced my ancestry back to the Mortimer line... Actually much further back than that, but that's my relation to this site in particular...

Interesting, but one small point, its in Herefordshire not Shropshire. I lived there for 7 years. My son went to the local school.

Not a presenter in sight , fantastic, pity so little is left , to me it looks as if it was deliberately destroyed , those walls are so thick , but most of the fortifications left no longer fortify ! As a child I used go with my father exploring castles in the Wye valley , my rascally welsh ancestors meant that Norman marcher barons built castles to live in all over the place !

Fear is a weapon. Imagine the life of the locals that built it for them, under the fear of god and guns.
