    That's exactly something I should have been told on the first day of grad school but no one around was secure enough to tell the student that. Thanks for saying this quiet part out loud.

    I always thought it was weird when I encountered this in my first year. Namely because I have many research interests. Also because this expectation says to me that we should not be required to take classes (aside from maybe methods coursework) or be in these programs for more than 3-4 years.
