    Several had the same question many did but were unanswered about removing the second set of plastic wrap on the fluoride filters. Yes, you do lose the flow direction marking on the filters, but the top of the filter had a wide collar that the bottom of the filter doesn't have. When screwing them on, mark one spot with tape or sticky note and count turns from there. One of my filters took only 7 turns - you'll feel resistance when you need to stop turning them.

    Thank you for these videos! I want to make sure I install and prime correctly. I just received my first Berkey filter. I got the "Big Berkey" which came with 2 of the black filters. I also purchased the Flouride+Arsenic filters. I live in a town which sometimes has water pollution problems, plus I'm interested in avoiding additional toxins that don't get flagged by standard EPA legal requirements. Berkey does not participate in NSF/ANSI-certification, and I haven't seen it mentioned in common consumer report articles, but it seems to me that their published lab results indicate they are high on the effectiveness spectrum, and do filter out some contaminants not handled by other brands. I'm glad to have found your UA-cam videos!

    I just ordered a Travel Berkey with additional fluoride filters, and I am seriously considering sending it back. The PF-2 filters did not prime using the button--as you point out, it is not compatible with many modern faucet heads--but also did not prime using the new Prime Rite blue silicon nozzle. Both the button and the Prime Rite almost caused a backup of water into the faucet heads in my kitchen and bathroom. I ended up having to use a squeeze bottle, like chefs use to swirl sauce onto a plate with, which is not practical or efficient. The Black Berkey elements primed fine with the squeeze bottle (after an overnight soak in cool water), but the fluoride elements, even after multiple flushes both with squeeze bottle and by running gallons of water through the system fully assembled, produce only a trickle of water out the bottom end, and that water, though clear, has a saline taste that the origin water does not. Thus, I have no idea whether I received faulty parts. The company's troubleshooting responses almost all suggest user error as the problem, and they are resistant to making changes to their designs to improve them. I just don't understand the intransigence. It's a simple premise that could be almost perfect with a bit of work on the part of the engineers. Thanks for your helpful hints here; I know they'll be useful to many Berkey buyers!

    • @AlexKim_munshaa

      this is exactly what I went through yesterday. Also still a saline/aspirin-y tap tasting water. i tried priming for more than 10+ liters of water and 40+ mins in faucet, the sharpness of the nasty taste curbed a but but it never went away. I was using waterbottles to flush them because my tap is like a shower head and i can't remove them. It really sucked.

    • @tamcon72
      @tamcon72 3 роки тому +3

      @@AlexKim_munshaa They say in every FAQ I've read that one may have to flush them through 10--10!--full system cycles to fully flush the PF-2 filters. I bought a Zero Water counter top system right before ordering the Berkey, so I've been sending every batch of Berkey water with my questionable PF-2 filters through the Zero Water system to get any fluoride/manufacturing particulates out before decanting the water into a dispenser. I'm using two different filtration systems because the one I paid hundreds of dollars for isn't fully functioning or is defective. It's absurd.

    • @AlexKim_munshaa
      @AlexKim_munshaa 3 роки тому +1

      @@tamcon72 have you ever thought of returning the unit? Im still within the window and i am definitely considering it. When you filter through zero water system, does it taste less like tap water? I tried removing the fluoride filter and the taste is bearable but it still has tap taste, and somehow it feels like it has a glycerine like texture. I am honestly lost and I don’t know what to do.

    • @tamcon72
      @tamcon72 3 роки тому +2

      @@AlexKim_munshaa The glycerine like texture, the filminess, is from the PF-2 filters. I don't think it's harmful, but it is a contaminant from the filter that we shouldn't have to drink. I think it's nonsense that this is "manufacturing dust," and I don't understand why Berkey buyers don't question the company's attribution of all odd tastes, odors, and textures to "dust." This is not plausible.
      The Zero Water filter does filter out fluorides; it's similar to a 6 stage reverse osmosis system. However, the filter life is waaaaay shorter than that of the Black Berkeys, and even the PF-2s once they are fully flushed. That's why I got the Berkey; I knew it would be more economical in the long run. It seems to be working better now, but the PF-2s are still not fully flushed, as there is a very slight saline aftertaste to the last two batches of water I've run through the Berkey system. I have another month's worth of Zero Water filters here, and will continue to run the Berkey water through the Zero Water system, before decanting, until the last Zero Water filter is spent. But if the Berkey water is not pristine by then--if the PF-2 filters aren't flushed and working perfectly--the company will be hearing from me.
      The company is notoriously averse to replacing whole systems, although they seem good about replacing parts. To be honest, the PF-2s have several design flaws such that a replacement set may prove as difficult to use as my current one, so I will not send anything back at this time. I just wish there were higher standards of quality control at Berkey/New Millennium Concepts, Ltd. It shouldn't take a month or two to discern that a part of one's unit is defective or to run all these rudimentary tests to see if the manufacturer made a mistake in the making of one's unit. I expect this from brands making cheap crap overseas, but not from a prestigious company like NMCL.

      @@tamcon72 thanks for your reply. I am torn because I did also feel like it might be hard to return the whole thing. I'm still in the window of the return... And I'm wondering is this worth it? Would the water ever taste good? The only reason I got this was because I tried Berkey water somewhere else and it didn't have the tap water taste... I agree with you on their design, I feel like it shouldn't be made like this so one has to prime and wash for 10x to get the clean tasting water.

    I have a travel Berkey and an Imperial. I use the arsenic filters on both. Living in the LA area, knowing there were many military bases that were here in the past, knowing that no one cared what they dumped on/into the ground - you know, out of sight, out of mind, and serving in the military, the ground and water around here has to be polluted, no matter what the "politicians" say. And the water piping in lots of areas is approaching 100 years old.
    You know when the cities print out water test results, they don't go to the end of the water lines to do the tests, they do it at the treatment plant. If you've ever opened up a fire hydrant and seen the stuff that comes out, it's the same water that comes to your house, down the old water piping....enough said.

    I started to use these filters. I am fairly confident (as can be for a newbie) that I primed them properly as I didn't see any particulates afterwards after running water through them about four times.
    But man.... I have never experienced such slow filtering. I mean painfully slow. Like it takes all day slow. Is that normal for the white filters to make the process significantly slower? It was never this slow with just the black filters.

      The following are a couple of questions to better understand your post.
      1) What problem are you having? No water filtering, slow filtering, etc.
      2) Which model of the Berkey do you have?
      3) Do you have the Fluoride Filters?
      If you have the Fluoride Filter and the Berkey is not working, try getting the Berkey to work first with only the Black filters first. Once it is working only with the Black filters you can ad the Fluoride filters. The incremental troubleshoot approach will help you narrow down the issue.
      The most common issue with a Berkey not working is the Black Filters are not primed correctly.
      The first time I assembled the Berkey, I used the immersion approach with the Black Berkey filters and had minimal issues. We started with the fluoride filters from the start so my expectation of performance was set based on the performance of both filters. When we replaced the Black Filters and primed the filters with the faucet, I did not prime them long enough and the water flow was very low. I primed the filter longer and it improved the water flow since it resolved the issue of air in the filter resisting the flow of water through the filter.
      Let me know if you were able to get your Berkey to work.

    I was gonna try and use the pf2 filters with my berky. However it’s internal is half alumina balls and half carbon. After flushing both directions with 30-50 gallons of water if you shake the filter then flush again quite a bit of milky white alumina still continues to come out. I have big concerns with alumina coming out in my drinking water. I purchased a digital conductivity meter to check the water after filtering and with the pf2 filters I was getting higher readings then normal tap water. I eventually threw them away. Take your new filters off shake for a few seconds and flush thru it. Nothing but toxin coming out. It’s my understanding aluminum causes Alzheimer’s.

      Here is a couple of questions to clarify your situation. Which model of the Berkey do you have? How long is it taking to filter your water?
      The Fluoride Filters will reduce the flow of water compared to just running the Black Berkey filters. A significant reason for priming the fluoride filter is to remove the loose particle in the filter and clean the filter out. If you do not prime the fluoride filter long enough, you will have small particle in the lower clean water chamber.

    My faucet is the reason why I can't get my filters primed. I wish there was a local tech that would come out bcuz some of us are challenged. I even bought the primer kit and that doesn't even work. I am about to give up and send this thing back!

    • @jaxsjaxs5

      I had the same problem, don’t give up. It literally took me 2 times. The first time I immersed the black filter and put mugs on top, due to the buoyancy. Then filled the berkey with water without the fluoride. It took a week for the water to trickle down. I was about to give up. Then after a week of being discouraged I tried again to get my faucet to cooperate and pressed really hard on the primer circle thing, it took another 45 min to see the beading of the water and moved on to prime my fluoride filters. I’m hoping it filters faster than a week, but yes the faucet can really discourage you, but don’t give up.

    I can't understand the logic in using this priming method, filling the inside of the filter with tap water, when the very thing you want is to filter the existing murk OUT of your water. In doing so, you irreversibly contaminate the inside of your filter, hence the water that will go out of it when you start using the system. I am sure the few people reporting problems with Berkey did it that way, it doesn't make sense as tap water is anything but clean in most parts of the world.
    Better to use the soaking method, the sucking method, or the manual black rubber pump that Berkey sells as well. I have bought it, it works very fast and with no hassle once you have noticed all elements have a specific direction for a specific use (you can purge your filters as well with it).
    I bought my system 6 years ago and I am so delighted I did, that I offered one to my son as well.

    • @OurNomadicStory
      @OurNomadicStory  Рік тому

      This is a good question. My thought is I was using a good source of water to prime the filter. The priming runs the water from the less clean to the clean side. If you could store water through that had been filtered by the normal black filters and prime under pressure it would be better than using city water. Since I do not have that ability, a good source with pressure is used.
      Priming is needed since the size of the filter will not operate correctly when dry since air in the filter.
      The Black filter has an option to prime via soaking. This option is not available for the Flouride & Arsenic white filter.

    • @MataH1
      @MataH1 Рік тому

      @@OurNomadicStory yes that's right. The very first time I installed it I didn't have the pump do I just soaked it vertically in a jar, then installed it, and first it still took forever to filter. But then it worked. Now I have the pump and am not looking back!! 😄
      Fluoride filter is another kettle of fish. After my last miserable attempt to prime it I thought I would try from the pump. When it start rejecting clean water from the black filter, I will keep that water and force it through with the pump and using the white join. Not sure if it would be enough pressure but I'll try. It's too bad Berkey doesn't include an adapter for that purpose. Maybe there us a way to design one.
