A subscriber asked what to do when your dog is not food motivated. I thought everyone might benefit from my answer yes, the fear of the bath or nail trim out weighs the tasty food. try feeding the best food, chicken, cheese, liverwurst to your dog while a 2nd person runs the water in the bath tub and turns on the Dremel. Even in another room at first. . it takes so much time to help a dog to relax.
This is what happened when I was filming the video. What you did not see in the video was Nicky leaving and going in her bed 3 times when I turned on the grinder. I waited until she was relaxed enough to came back and we started again with the grinder further away. patience and distance and the best food will help your dog. I never held Nicky and prevented her from leaving the bench. I want it to be her decision to stay and have her nails trimmed. Then she will have trust. It is your dog's decision to stay with you. i would love to hear your comments. Thank you, Joyce

How do you help your dog relax while trimming their nails. I would love to hear your ideas. I have never had a dog as fearful about nail trimming as Nicky. You can see in my other videos listed at the end of this video the time we have spent touching feet and feeding, slowly accustoming her to the Dremel. She has worn a Thunder shirt hoping she will be more relaxed. Nothing has helped Nicky to really relax. At least by feeding her for every nail and then for every foot, she will tolerate the nail trims. She is even more terrified of the nail clippers. The Lucky Tail nail grinder is the quietest Dremel and she tolerates the sound the best of any grinder. Here is a link to the Lucky Tail grinder. luckytail.com/regular-dog-claw-grinding-device-aff-bundle-1a9w5s/?aff=136 . I would love to hear your comments.

What if your dog is not food motivated? My dog will refuse to eat a treat if it means bath time or nail clipping time.

Try adding distance from the Dremel and shorter time it runs.

I have cats, not dogs, but this might help. I do a lot of fostering. Have taught a lot of cats to accept nail trims (with a clipper) by combining it with nap-in-my-lap time. I have one cat with so many behavior problems he wasn't adoptable and is mine permanently, and it used to take THREE of us to trim his nails. But over time, he has learned to be very relaxed about it. A couple of my cats actually sleep through it. I just gradually, bit by bit, over time, keep introducing the nail clipper while the cat is napping in my lap, relaxed, purring getting pets and scritches and attention. Might only get one nail and they run off. Eventually, they stay for two or three nails. Over time, they realize it's no big deal, just something that sometimes goes with lap time. (Obviously, crucial NOT to cut a quick.) Sometimes I start by just pretending to cut their nails, or just letting them sniff and chew on the clipper and get used to it touching them.

I took your advice when having a puppy home. Playing, massage his feet really helped. Getting used to trimmer noise and vibration. Now my dog allows me to do his nail. Something still a bit inpatient so I choose the time when he is sleepy...
