Robin Williams Impressions as Genie

- Credit to Robin WIlliam's amazing performance. as Genie. We might have missed these jokes as kids but rewatching this Disney Classic you'll spot some new jokes. These references can be interpreted as 'Parental Bonus.' TV Tropes define this as: "A joke on a children's TV show that children of the appropriate age would likely never get, but which their parents would. Serves as a way to keep the adults and older kids entertained and usually takes the form of a Homage to a movie or TV show that children would not normally be familiar with."
"I can't believe it, I'm losin' to a rug." I don't know why, but that part kills me! 😂😂😂
For me its the eyes XD
It kills me too because that's the face you make when you're losing to a carpet.
They said it's Rodney Dangerfield, but the way I remember it, it's Rover Dangerfield (the animation about a dog). Loved that movie. So thats the reference for me
I love it too in spanish its also super funny
ditto
I am 90% sure that the team behind this movie just told Robin Williams: "Just act, we'll animate around it."
Pretty much
He did improvise most of his acts in the movie
It's possible to find videos on UA-cam showing just that. I don't remember what any of the titles are, but you can find them somewhere.
In his "Actor's Studio" interview, he pretty much confirmed that he had almost free rein. Every so often things got a little risque and they had to (try to) dial him back. For instance, telling him, "Mr. Williams, The Mouse doesn't have genitals." You can imagine the line that led up to THAT comment.
you are correct, that's actually exactly what they did do. he did hundreds of different takes where he'do do other impressions, but not all of them could make it in. i'm sure there's a video somewhere showing all the alternate recordings with some of the storyboarding for them
I like how he makes references to things no one will understand for hundreds of years.
A lot of kids including myself didn't understand any of them, cuz they're from movies kids wouldn't have watched, LOL.
@@nahor88 I think he's talking about the people in the film, since Genie's impersonating people that didn't exist yet in their time
I heard a theory that Aladdin is in a post-apocalyptic future world, hence why he makes all these 20th century references
@@creativeguy1martinez693 the genie made those references 'cause he can travel in time

will be missed? He died in 2014 he's been missing already for 5 years now...
Fun Fact: Robin Williams has voiced a TON of unscripted scenes and that the directors went to choose the best one that fits. 😆
you can find those recordings on youtube somewhere and the storyboards. i need to go and look for it XD
I think that most or all of these were improvised while he was reading the script and they decided to animate them into the movie
Robin Williams _didn't_ have a script. He improvised most of his role as Genie, including all of his impressions and movie references.
didn't have a script? hahaa OK.
@@deanwoodford2017 as a matter of fact, he ad-libbed so much that the film was rejected for a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
No shit
Genie's part mostly consisted of having Williams ad lib in front of the microphone. Then they put the parts they wanted in the movie. (There was no way they could fit all 16 hours of Williams in.)
Robin Williams: emphasizes the personality of all powerful genie by expressing as many personalities as possible in a single film

Will Smith in about 72% of his movies plays "The dude who makes Will Smithian quips all the time".
The Jack Nicholson one is pretty interesting, at one point they were planning to actually go for him. And they later considered him for the part of Hades in Hercules, but he demanded too high a paycheck and they got James Woods instead.
JCBro2014 Too high a paycheck?? The almighty disney has a budget? Thats a suprise to me.
As much as I would love to see Nicholson play a Disney Character, I think both characters got better actors, and there for gave better performances.
Yeah, I can't imagine The Genie or Hades being anywhere near as memorable without Robin Williams or James Woods. James Woods especially on Hades, he can really ham it up.
Interestingly, they offered the role of Joker in Batman '89 to Robin Williams before eventually giving it to Jack Nicholson.
Are you sure you don't mean Tim Curry? They considered it at one point but dropped it. They were also going to have Tim Curry voice The Joker in Batman The Animated Series but they didn't like his take (and supposedly due to smoking his whole laugh he couldn't produce the laughs they wanted) so the producers got Mark Hamill instead.
The fact that most of his stuff was improvised on the spot and they rolled with it and animated around his bits really shows just how great he was.
It's about time someone made this

*Impression*
im·pres·sion
imˈpreSHən
noun
_an imitation of a person or thing, especially one done to entertain.
"he did an impression of Frank Sinatra"_
Never thought about that as a kid like i was.
Will Smith just can't beat Robin Williams. Live action Aladdin is gonna have the Fresh Prince of the Lamp for most of the movie
The new Aladdin movie isn't out yet, so we don't know if he'll be better than Robin or not, we'll have to see it first.
jerel it’s live action, it’s a remake of another Disney movie that was fine as it was animated. And most of those adaptations haven’t been very good. None have been exceptionally terrible but none have really been as good as the animated version. Hell beauty and the beast was basically just the animated movie with live action and 1 or 2 new songs and scenes. Little mermaid I didn’t even know existed till I saw it on Netflix, and I had to look up jungle book so I could name 3 movies that didn’t need to be made for this comment.
Why not remake movies that didn’t do so well like Pocahontas.....no nevermind, skip that one, more like movies that were good but didn’t do so well like hunchback of Notre dame
@@ComicWriter-ml3qt the little mermaid on Netflix has nothing to do with the disney movie. It's an entirely different movie. The disney remake is still in the works. Guess that's why I didn't like it either
CVerse Did you seen the new trailer haha??
@@ManyPeregrine81 yes.......
The Robert de Niro one, I never would have guessed that was an impression. A reference/joke, maybe. But in context of the scene, it fit in perfectly. And he didn't sound like he was imitating someone.
I had NO IDEA who it was as a kid but I knew it had to be a reference I just didn’t know about because it was way too exaggerated and he had the New York accent
I thought I was the only one before I saw this! Crazy that it was an impression instead of him being serious
@@UdoADHD Funnily enough, my mom has a slight New York accent, but I didn't pick up on Genie's. I never guessed it was a reference, but being legit angry and offended.
Because it is more of a vague reference--he doesn't even say one Robert De Niro line. "You lookin at me?" gets pretty close but that's it.
The William Buckley impression is so funny to me I don’t know why 😂😂😂
When I was a kid and I first watch Aladdin I didn't get half of Genies pop culture references I wasn't sure what a pop culture reference what even was I was like 6 even as an adult some of these I didn't get I'm glad we're made this video this helped a lot.
Ryan Yeager When I was a kid, there were lots of characters who would make references and be kind of goofy (the genie, the mask etc) and I didn’t get what they were alluding to, but I knew it was reference to something. I want to write a character that will act in different weirdly specific ways and make people think it’s referencing something, but it’s not actually referencing anything
I completely understand what you’re saying but that paragraph is so poorly written it hurts me
@@matthew1291 it basically jokes for adults to get while watching with their kids. Alot of cartoons did that adding innuendo or pop culture references.

Oh that's where John K got the idea for ren's voice
SoloArtCrafter Productions correct. He was a fan of Peters work. For Stimpy, he was surprised that Billy West could do an impression of Larry Fine of the Three Stooges. So, Peter Lorre and Larry are Ren and Stimpy.
1:16: right here, that's where the Ren insults came from, especially the "Eediot" part.
XD
Even funnier when you realize Lorre was famous for his role in M, in which he played a serial killer who preyed on little girls. He really was John K's hero.
MostVerticalPrimate MK II And we all know how that turned out…
So many references and easter eggs, the writers were genius
Completely leaves no questions as to why Robin Williams took the role. What a blast he must've had.
*roll to role
most people are saying that Robin Williams actually ad-libbed most of his lines in this movie. The directors just gave him a general idea of what was going on in the scene and he just made the rest up.
Most of the references are improvised by Robin Williams himself.

What happened to “don’t they look lovely June” and “yes Henry I love the feathers”
Wait? Henry and June? Henry and June Miller?!
You forgot Ed Sullivan ("Right here, direct from the lamp"), Señor Wences (ventriloquist), Carol Channing (stewardess), Arsenio Hall (whooping after the first official wish), and Walter Brennan ("He faced the galloping hordes!").
MetFanMac I couldn’t find any good clips for some of those or the video quality wasn’t up to par.
MetFanMac Was he imitating somebody during the scene when he makes Aladdin into a prince?
Like I mentioned, he was doing the Arsenio Hall whoop after Aladdin made the wish. I don't believe he imitates any actual people afterwards, however.
MetFanMac Ok, so you don’t think it was an impression when he said, “first that fez and vest combo has to go. What are we trying to say here? Peasant? etc”
I think at one point during the Prince Ali number, he was impersonating Ethel Merman, though more in appearance than in voice.

The impressions and animations were perfectly done, Robin Williams was a King
"Hey, you want to make $14 the hard way?"
"I'll take that as a yes."
Even if most people didn't get these references, Robin's delivery and the talented animators made these work on their own and for those who did get the references it's a nice little bonus for them 👍
