recently read this comic complete and i loved it, every single chapter was better than the others(for me). a lot of spider phrases stayed with me. from "I ain't nobody's fuckin cartoon!!!" to "Ha! Nobody touch that dog, it will be my dinner". the comic its just powerful stuff, the characters are charismatic and funny at the same time, and you can see the growth of every single one of them across the story. i loved Channon, she was just fuckin badass, and the fact that spider was just a better man than a lot of the more respectable people, just shows how bad its that kind of amoral society. loved it, definitely a re-read and i love seeing that theres people talking about it(just not the people i know xD). thx for the video dude, i never knew that there was an absolute Edition. Cheers!!!
I can't wait to finish the series, I'll definitely re-read it at some point as well. the art is so good and the concept was engaging. the worrying style is so much faster paced than anything I've read. it's basically a comic version of venture bros in terms of writing style.
The series begins as a Hunter S. Thompson inspired series of stories and world building elements. However the series did not begin as a Vertigo series, it began under a short lived DC Sci-Fi imprint called Helix Comics. It even included the HIGHLY underrated title Cyberella. The heavy use of advertisements early on was key to building a kind of alternate reality. At the time of publication the internet was still in the POP UP ADS GALORE era, so it was assumed advertisements would just get even worse. The initial promo for the series was even a collectible newspaper that is worth hunting down. A lot of the series takes inspiration from Hunter S. Thompson's political stories and in particular his classic Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72'. The series remains as true today as it was then as a result.
Thanks for the review Gem! I completely agree with you - all the world-building takes away from the story - and that's the problem with some writers these days - they have a great story but don't know how to integrate the world-building with the flow of the story. As an example, take Alan Moore - Watchmen was 12 issues and he nailed everything in just those issues (world building, plot, philosophy, comic within a comic (black freighter), symmetrical design, emotional resonance, reader connection etc). You recently had Cullen Bunn on your show - I absolutely agree his Harrow County and Sixth Gun are fantastic reads but they are like 60 and 32 issues, respectively. He and other writers will never be masters until they can learn to do what Moore is so skilled at - integrating the world-building with the forward momentum of the plot - Moore did that with V for Vendetta, From Hell, Miracle Man, Providence, Fashion Beast, etc. With that being said, my top 3 favorite books of all time are: 1) Watchmen 2) Dark Knight Returns 3) Planetary by Warren Ellis in which Spider Jerusalem also makes a cameo! Stay minty fresh man!
It’s funny that you mentioned about staying caught up so that you don’t fall behind and have to catch up. I guess I missed this video lol. Sounds like an interesting story to say the least, great review Gem 💎
I'm still dying from the fact that I was within 20 feet of Warren Ellis and half the cast of Castlevania back in 2019, three times tried winning a autograph session, and failed.
Thank you for the great review! Do you know if they have any plans to reprint these? Everywhere I look the softcover and hardcover seem to be impossible to find
I dig the old 90s art work I always get into that weird stuff but sometimes weird writing will lose me ya kno but definitely something ill have to check out sometime great review as always brotha !
Nice review! I just ordered book 1 and I'm looking forward to trying it out. If I can't get into it from the first one I might have to wait awhile and give it a try again later. My Deadpool classic collection is still incomplete so I don't want to interrupt that with transmetropolitan if it's that slow to get really good.
Could you do a review on the Absolute Batman Arkham Asylum you bought recently, please? Do you think absolutes should get smaller? As for Transmetropolitan, I am not going to break my bones trying to get it to read it. I would much rather spend my money on things that I know that will return to after reading.
Really enjoyed the first absolute. But the 2nd one has been bit of a slog to get through for me. Have to agree - the lack of an overarching plot does hurt it quite a bit. Here’s hoping that things really pick up with volume 3.
My volume 2 had a large scratch on the slipcase, so I returned it for a new copy. the new copy came and it had pages GLUED together at the corners... I saw this same issue on The Deluxe Edition's UA-cam video as well for volume 2. I'm kind of mad that DC would just let something like that slip. no quality control, no concern for customer experience.
I’m just about to start Vol 3 so it’s cool to see you post a review, I was wondering if you’d read it yet. So far it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, but I can see how it could be too extreme and chaotic for some. It would be a great movie or tv show. But the absolute editions really do it justice since there’s so many details in the setting and characters. Too bad that you’re planning to move them since they are gorgeous shelf sitters but I know you gotta conserve space for your favorites.
@@GemMintCollectibles *didn't really mind the slow start of this story...while many of the individuals in this world are truly vile i can appreciate the world in which they exist...but would not want to live within it or share it with them*
The art is stunning! The stories are intriguing (but can be a bit disgusting) - and I think the whole individualistic world that Warren Ellis creates where people can be themselves with their sexual preferences, their preferred look, way of life - is quite foreward thinking. And this is hopefully one posibility for the future.
*i could see a live action version of this being made as a long play series (to do it justice) using Vin Diesel as Spider Jerusalem...think he'd do the role justice and he looks the part as well*
I also had the same. Read the first trade then I was done. Could not move forward. This was the time I was reading vertigo left n right. Y the last man, preacher, sandman and lucifer. I finished everything else but could not get through this. Warren ellis is a great writer don’t get me wrong.. a legend...but spider jerusalem was just not for me.
Yo Gem good stuff. I have an unrelated question. I saw your Sandman review recently and noticed you went with the Absolute version; I'm interested in them myself and was wondering how the binding has held up?
Have you read Nextwave, early 2000's Marvel series bit before 2010. By Ellis & Stuart Immonen when he was on sequential art. But it's maybe my favorite Ellis series next to Planetary. To call it a parody would be a disservice but it riffs on that era of Marvel in the odd issue or two.
@@GemMintCollectibles Sadly there isn't any omni or OHC release but the complete collection tpb will collect the whole run, under 15 issues. Pretty much a misfit team with Elsa Bloodstone, Monica Rambeau, Machine Man and others delivered in a action packed comedy series in a way only Ellis can deliver! Extremely underrated and you won't regret the read! Just look up Nextwave on IST :D It's also very self aware in that they realize Monica has had a stupid number of hero identities and Tabitha being a B list X-Man... if that.
I love your reviews but you're actually spoiling the entire run . It's more of a retelling than a review. Please put spoilers in your title . Thank you.
Out of all the 90's companys that popped up Vertigo was one of the hardest ones. I liked there content.
I'm just here to leave my supportive comment, love the channel. SMASH THE LIKE BUTTON PEOPLE

One of my favourites. The series that got me into comic collecting. 🙂
i just came to leave my like. transmetropolitan was one of the titles that got me hooked in the late 90s. glad you read it!
I love this run and it’s one of the reasons why Ellis is my favorite writer

Awesome..Non spoiler review. ... already ordered my copy of the 1st absolute..
Just read the whole series fucking amazing
Thanks, Gem Mint.

I always appreciate your honest, down to earth reviews! Keep up the good work!
i love your comic book reviews, you should do more reviews. It helps me a lot to decide.
i used to be on top if it more...but have been busy. Trying to get back in the groove.
Great series - I have all the absolutes.
*i have a lot of them but not all...hard to believe that many of these were so moving... didn't expect that starting out*
We gonna get an omnibus?

I found them on Amazon, take a peek you might luck out. I was only looking for softcover when I did.
Wish I could get this. Just spent everything on Akira: 35th Box Set.
Will we get an absolute transmetropolitan 3 reprint?
Great and honest review. Cool video man
This vid was exactly what I was looking for, cheers man, I'll be picking it up and subbing
thanks
Ine of my favourites of all time.
Spider Jerusalem its like A Rick Sanchez form Rick and Morty but more crazy and more Yonkie
Spiders ex-wife is modeled after the artist his wife btw. i met them a few weeks ago, really nice dude! :)
whaa thats awesome

I want all three absolutes. I only can find volume 2.
Good video btw.
seems interesting. I would have never looked at it twice in a comic book store.
I have all 10 volumes as a hand me down I wasn’t sure if it would be worth my time but I might start reading them after justice league dark
Worth the read
I'm ALWAYS smiling so don't trust me Gem! 😂 I might give this a chance. Thanks!

Vin's too big and too old. Also, he doesn't sound like how I think he would sound. Honestly, I still can't cast him in my head.
