Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

? QUESTION: When you start selling quail at the farmers market, will you also offer classes for processing the birds? I'd be interested in learning how to process quail with a "hands on" type of class. As a suggestion, you could always rent a place away from your farm so as to keep your family's privacy (I fully understand privacy issues). Love your channel. You guys are great teachers😊

Kevin and Sarah it's really exciting seeing the things that you are doing on the Homestead. I think that there are other Homesteaders that could take a chapter from your book so to speak. I've noticed how some that have created UA-cam channels as part of their homestead journey and income stream sort of become totally dependent on UA-cam as the income source unlike what you are doing. From the the time I was introduced to your channel it seemed to be a indication by the two of you that not only did you what to grow your own food sources you also indicated that you wanted grow your homestead into a business for your families needs financially and I can only say how impressed with your every calculated move in the direction of making those things happen! From your UA-cam content and quality of videos too planning, prepping, growing, harvesting and storing the foods that you are growing or raising. The two of you have really managed the business end of planning and increasing the very well in my opinion. I also noticed as l believe how you have really humbled yourselves in the good times and during the pitfalls of homesteading as you always seems to recognize your many experiences and blessings ☺️👌🙏💕. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and perspectives with so many. I'm hoping that one day Homestead's such as The Fit Farmer, Homestead Heart, Growing up Holt, Grow Family Network, Art & Bri, Hollar Homestead and a few others might make your acquaintance because like you they are also unique and amazing people. Although some of their channels or Homestead have run into a quite a few challenges and in my opinion they're not reaching their greatest potential for success or growth on UA-cam in the Homestead Community. So until the next video! God bless.

I would keep three males of the small hen groups. Then rotate the males for the first few hatches. Give each a hen or two to start with. That will keep your genetics pool as broad as possible.

You both are wonderful Godly people but I have to admit I miss the videos of farm chores and what all is changing with the farm and future changes. I enjoyed those and it is what drew me to the videos. I have no use for the training videos, but I'm sure many need and want them. It seems that is all you do now. God Bless you and all you do hoping you bring back some of the other videos though.

Sometimes when you are vent sexing you may find foam but it will really be a hen that was recently bred by a male. You will also only get foam when the males are fully mature. Males usually start crowing at about 5 weeks of age. Males also have the habit of breeding other males which sometimes can be confusing at first.😃Thank you for showing in detail how to do the wiring for the light. I wouldn't have had a clue how to do it otherwise.

It is always fun when someone tells me they watched a video and thanked me for pointing them your direction. To be honest catching them hasn't been too big of an issue for me when mine get out. They seem to relax right after they land and stay still for a bit. Though one time one managed to fly over to a neighbors yard and seemed to instantly regret his decisions in life. He kept trying to come back through the fence towards me, lol. We had to get a smaller ladder to go up and over and fetch him since the fence was too weak to clamber over. Luckily he picked the yard without dogs to go into 😅

Fun, I breed parrots for 30 years. one of the best things i put in the buildings was a central Vacuum system, the dust is so bad. Put a big shop vac outside and run PVC pipe where i wanted outlets, used the very fine saw dust for bedding in the trays so not to plug the pipe, outside i made a top for a 95 gal trashcan, rolling ben trash can. Bird dust is a real problem for people and birds.. Love your videos. I sold allot of quail eggs to chinese restaurant they boil them and put in salads.

just caught your snapping turtle episode, so many comments to say.. first, andrew zimmern on the travel or food channel did several very funny, and informative episodes on preparing turtles. second, i went to college with a guy from the jersey pine barrens, and he talked about snapper soup, and he brought a can to show us, it does exist. third, when i was living in northern nh., there was a resteraunt owner who was from south jersey, and told him about a big snapping turtle i had encountered, and he said if i can catch one, he would make us a big batch of snapper soup. keep up the good work. john

I am catching up on episodes tonight (lol) and you were talking about lighting for the quail pen and although the ring light solution is great i use the led strip lights that are even lower wattage (would be nice for you being on solar) and can also adjust the brightness with the remote. Take a look into them they work great and being a strip you can run one for multiple stacked pens or side by side pens. Just giving another idea if it hasn’t been spoken or thought of. Enjoy!!

You could also look at Aquarium L.E.D's lights and submersible lights 5-10 watts, all different lengths, and what ever light pattern you choose will come on with a timer , not having to cut off the on/off switch.... just need a 110v 3 plug adapters... I just added an 44 - inch, 11 watts submersible white/blue tube light for 34.00, much smaller are less expensive...

Though I doubt I will ever raise quail, I still learned from this video. I love the way you chronicle your problem-solving process. It encourages me to not give up when a problem presents itself in my life. Keep up the good work. Can you get to the point where the wire connects to the light? or is it a sealed unit? If you can, could you use the short, plug end of the wire and rewire the light? It would so you eliminate a splice and loose wire going to the electric outlet. You may already know this. I learned it as a bird watcher. When the males look different from the females it's called "sexual dimorphism"

Kevin & Sarah, another great video. I recently got 50 Jumbo whitewing pharaohs from MySHire Hatchery. They sent 10 extra, that apparently are jumbo Whites from your description, though 1 might be a Panda/ has a lot of black on its back. Mine hatched out about 8-9 of Dec. They started crowing about 5 wks old, i started getting eggs last week. Love those cages, but I'm not set up to keep indoors, My cages have to be outside . I am thinking of expanding to sell & process meat birds. Have a blessed day.

Kevin, I wish you would weigh your birds! I would love to see which ones are heavier. I want to get hatching eggs from you and it would help me to know the weights! We always weight ours when we sex them to decide who to keep and who goes in the freezer. That way they are only stressed once. I use a plastic clear container with holes from Costco that grapes come in to hold them on the scale calmly. It works great! Please let me know the weights of the different kinds of jumbo quail! Thank you for all your help and info!!

Even if you only have 4 or 5 females to a cage, having an extra male to insert for genetic diversity would be a prudent idea. Good luck, be well. Blessings.
